Why does AdBlue in a diesel car need its own filler?

Not one liquid but two: that's what plenty of newer diesels near Tamworth Green and Fishtoft carry, with diesel for the motor. AdBlue's own tank holds it, and from there it goes to the exhaust, where spraying cleans the gas.

There's a filler for every tank. Plenty of motors share a single flap for the two, while others put the AdBlue filler to your boot or under the bonnet. At the pump, the diesel side is topped up all the time. Far less regularly, the AdBlue side is filled — mostly from a bottle, by someone working out where it goes. The mistake grows in the gap between the two.

AdBlue in the diesel tank in Tamworth Green: how it happens

Rarely is it carelessness: usually three things coincide.

Hurry follows from the warning. Your car warns you as AdBlue runs low, and an empty tank puts it into limp mode — so the top-up gets done quickly, before work on a drive off Mill Lane, or heading home in the car park outside the pub in the village.

Then the car is unfamiliar. A hire car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not, and the hand gets to for the cap it would have used on the old one.

A spout-topped bottle finds no obstacle at a diesel filler no more than at an AdBlue one. So the pour, once started, carries on. Scrane End or the middle of Tamworth Green: it takes the same few seconds either way.

Telling the AdBlue filler from the diesel filler

Look at these before pouring, at a forecourt in Tamworth Green or a drive out in Butterwick. Seconds, no more.

  • The cap. The AdBlue cap is regularly blue, or marked "AdBlue". Your diesel cap usually is not. Read it rather than going by where it sits.
  • Check the size: the smaller neck is, on plenty of motors, the AdBlue one.
  • Look inside your fuel flap: plenty of motors have a label there showing which fuel goes where.
  • The handbook shows which it is when your filler isn't next to your diesel cap: your boot, or under the bonnet.
  • Collecting a hire or company car, perhaps at the car park at Boston? Check with the person who drove the car last before leaving, not once the light goes on.

AdBlue top-ups that never reach the diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever in Lincolnshire that is.

  • Turn off after you park — level ground, engine stopped, and not in a rush by Shore Road on the verge.
  • Find the AdBlue filler, check the cap, and say the word "AdBlue" aloud as unscrewing it. It sounds silly. It works.
  • Leave your diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.
  • Using the bottle's own spout, tip slowly — and stop when it is full or the bottle is empty.
  • Before you start the car, close the cap and look again that your diesel cap was never came off.

Find during the second or third step that AdBlue went into the diesel tank? That's where you stop. Never go on to step five.

Tamworth Green: already put AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Then the order of things is short. Don't start the motor. On plenty of diesels the ignition alone runs the fuel pump, so do not switch it on. Don't top up with diesel to dilute it: AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where the fuel is drawn from.

The attendants at Gulf, Texaco or another forecourt will usually lend a hand pushing your car away when asked. At home in Tamworth Green? So the car stays put.

Where your motor has been run by now, stop somewhere safe then turn the vehicle off. On the A1(M), under 50 miles from Tamworth Green, that means the next exit. When our engineers turn up in Tamworth Green, what occurs?

Our engineers come to your car wherever it has stopped, whether that's outside Fishtoft Academy, near We'll Meet Again or on your own drive. The replies determine the work and the quote, so we ask what was put in, about how much, and if it's run. The quote comes on the call, before any van leaves.

Draining your tank comes next, then a thorough flush of your system. Unlike petrol, AdBlue forms crystals and attacks certain fuel-system metals, and none of it clears away unaided. That is why it matters more. The fuel filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested. Before we leave, our engineers start the car and make sure that it is running properly.

Most jobs are finished in about half an hour once our engineers get there, provided your engine hasn't run — and the pumps our engineers use are fine on a busy forecourt yet quiet after dark outside a house. The insurer usually wants the engineer's report and the VAT invoice, and both are yours once the job is done. Payment comes on the day, with no deposit. Misfuelling cover is included in many insurance policies — so make use of the wait to check yours.
