AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Tandlehill? Don't Start It

With AdBlue in your diesel tank, your ignition remains off and so does the motor. In plain terms, AdBlue is simply urea in water. Unlike fuel, it neither burns nor blends, and no harm happens until the motor sucks it through. In Tandlehill, AdBlue in a diesel tank caught before the motor runs normally means a drain and a thorough flush, right where the car is. Ring 0333 366 0103 before you do anything else.

Tandlehill, AdBlue in the diesel tank: what to do right away

Do these:

  • Keys out — then no one can power anything on.
  • Hazards on, if moving traffic is anywhere near.
  • So you can give us which fluid it was and about how much, keep your receipt or the empty bottle.
  • The van finds you quickest with a postcode starting PA10 2, or simply the name of a street nearby, and so phone from the spot.

Not to do:

  • No starting your motor — not briefly, not to reposition your car.
  • The ignition stays off: on many diesels, turning it on is enough to run your fuel pump.
  • AdBlue does not dilute in diesel — it separates out — so adding more diesel won't weaken it.
  • Don't drive the car anywhere, not even a short stretch along Lewis Crescent.
  • Do not try to drain it yourself at the kerbside.

Rolling your vehicle away from the pumps is a job for staff to help with, wherever Tandlehill forecourt you are on, the Morrisons included. If you are on your own drive, leave the car precisely where it is.

AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

The engine isn't what AdBlue is made for; your exhaust is. Its own tank holds it, and from there it's fed into the exhaust, where it cleans the gas. Nothing in it is meant to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is built to handle it.

Fuel mixes; AdBlue, after tipped in, will not. Its behaviour is not at all like fuel's. It's heavier than diesel, and so it sinks and gathers at the bottom of your tank, which is where the pickup sucks fuel from. Simplest of all: a vehicle that got AdBlue in Kilbarchan overnight and hasn't turned since. The liquid sits at the base of the tank, undrawn — though it will be first through once your motor starts, ahead of any diesel at all.

From there it does two kinds of damage. As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it is corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, so it keeps running on the components it gets to for as long as it stays there. Lines carrying AdBlue spell harm overnight for a car parked around Tandlehill. Just inside the tank, it stays stable. Water lubricates nothing. The injection pump and every injector depend on diesel running through them, and so the water part harms them by itself.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in Tandlehill

Why is AdBlue in a diesel frequently the bigger problem?

Petrol pumped into a diesel on Esso's forecourt leaves your fuel watery — that is the main fault. Blended into the diesel and sitting still, it is no threat for now; using the engine does the damage.

AdBlue in a diesel is an issue of the wrong substance altogether. Since it does not burn, running it through isn't an option. Crystals and corrosion stay after the following tankful, and AdBlue separates back out of your diesel, so thinning it won't work. Hence the flush matters more, and turning your key "to see" costs more here than nearly any other slip — in Howwood Road or the heart of Tandlehill equally.

As with petrol, there is good news. Wherever around Renfrewshire your car has stopped, an unstarted motor leaves the AdBlue still inside the reservoir: the simplest bit of a fuel system to clear.

How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank in Tandlehill?

In dim light, two caps together — the AdBlue one and the diesel cap, occasionally under one flap — can appear the same. Nobody means it; many layouts allow it. It mostly takes place outside the house, from a bottle bought en route home, not at the forecourt.

A couple of familiar ways account for the majority of them. The refill gets rushed outside the local primary school, because your dash lit up with a warning while the kids were dropped off. After work, a container goes in on a driveway close to Quarrybank. Or a driver unfamiliar with that flap refills your vehicle in dim light, stopped in the car park by The Spateston Inn.

The least familiar cars get it most — rentals, new ones, fleet cars, and the other vehicle in a family with both fuel types. An identical slip, same first step — keep it switched off — anywhere you happen to be around Tandlehill or the rest of Renfrewshire.

Already started your engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank around Tandlehill?

The AdBlue has left that tank, then. Your filter and lines have had it pulled along, and any running takes it on to the injection pump and each injector.

Lumpy running, smoke from the exhaust, lost power, dashboard lights or stalling: any might appear, perhaps part way across Tandlehill or returning from Cochrane Castle Golf Club. Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and don't restart the car to check. Each start pulls more of that through.

Leave the M8, under 5 miles from Tandlehill, by the first junction and park safely, rather than carrying on.

How far it went matters. A couple of hundred yards across Tandlehill to the car park by War Memorial is a very different job from a run towards Glasgow, under 15 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into your system with each mile. Tell us about how far it had come.

Our engineers do all of the flushing where your car has ended up, and once the engine has run there is more of it. Very seldom does it leave permanent damage when it is spotted soon.

What emptying AdBlue from a diesel involves around Tandlehill

The vehicle remains put, whether that is a road beside The Steeple, a driveway, a lay-by or a forecourt in Tandlehill, and our van comes to it. Before anything else we ask what was put in, roughly how much, and whether your engine has been run, since those answers determine this work.

Then your tank is emptied where the vehicle waits, and so the contaminated fuel and the AdBlue come out together. The fuel system is rinsed thoroughly, which matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, since what it leaves behind does not rinse out on its own. A test of the car follows last, after fresh diesel is added and the fuel filter is flushed or, where necessary, swapped. Most of these jobs are a half-hour job once our technicians turn up, if the motor hasn't run. The pumps are explosion-proof, safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

Bleeding your system with new diesel comes last. Whether it is a parking bay at Milliken Park or a driveway in Tandlehill, that is where our engineers fire it up and you head off. Our engineers confirm it runs smoothly on fresh diesel before leaving. The whole job is done where your car is, so it never needs to be taken to a workshop. Insurers want a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and both come at the end.

Tandlehill: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

There's no fair single quote, because the jobs aren't the same. What changes the cost is, first, whether the motor has run and for how long; then how much AdBlue went in; and finally where the car is and whether our van can get to it safely, which is easier on an open drive than in a tight space behind Kilbarchan Parish Church.

With that in mind, every call from Tandlehill opens with the identical trio — what got in, how much, if it ran — before any quote. Their replies shrink the range down to a single figure.

Our quote is quoted on the call, before anyone sets off; settling up happens on the day, by card or by phone, and nothing upfront. Misfuelling cover is part of plenty of insurance policies, so it pays to look at yours before the van arrives.
