Tanhouse: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

AdBlue in your diesel tank? Then leave your engine off — and the ignition as well. Urea mixed in water is what AdBlue is. Being water-based, it will not burn and won't blend with diesel; trouble just starts when the pump starts pulling it. In Tanhouse, AdBlue in a diesel tank found before the motor runs normally means a drain and a thorough flush, just where your car is. First, phone us on 0333 366 0103.

AdBlue in the diesel tank around Tanhouse: the first few minutes

Things to do:

  • Pull your keys out, and so no one switches the ignition on.
  • If you are at all near moving traffic, put your hazards on.
  • Which fluid, and about what volume? Save the bottle or your receipt, and our technicians can know.
  • The van finds you fastest with a postcode starting WN8 6, or just the name of a street nearby, and so phone from the spot.

Not to do:

  • Not even briefly, and not to roll the car: the motor remains off.
  • The ignition stays off: on lots of diesels, switching it on is enough to run your pump.
  • No extra fuel on top. The AdBlue will not mix, and so it is pointless.
  • Even a short way up Tanhouse Road is too far to drive the car.
  • Beside the road, do not try draining it yourself.

The staff working at any Tanhouse filling station — the Asda included — will normally help pushing it aside if you ask. On your own driveway, do not touch it at all.

AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

The engine is not what AdBlue is made for; your exhaust is. Its own reservoir holds it, and from there it's sprayed into the exhaust, where it treats the gas. Not one side fits the other: urea does not belong in a pump, and a pump cannot take urea.

Poured in with the diesel, it stays separate instead of blending — entirely different from fuel. The intake sucks fuel from the deepest part of the tank, and that is just where AdBlue ends up: as it is denser than diesel, it sinks. A car filled on a drive in Fosters Green yesterday evening and not started since counts as the straightforward case. Nothing has pulled the AdBlue up so far — though when your motor turns, that's what is pulled first, straight from the bottom of your tank.

From there it causes two kinds of harm. What remains when the water evaporates is urea, which forms crystals: they settle in narrow channels and clog filters. On top of that, it attacks certain metals in a fuel system, and keeps going until it is flushed out. Pipes carrying AdBlue mean harm by morning for a vehicle parked in Tanhouse. Just inside the tank, it stays the same. Water lubricates nothing. The injection pump and each injector need diesel flowing through them, so the water part damages them in its own right.

AdBlue in a diesel: why it is regularly worse than petrol

Petrol put into a diesel on Texaco's forecourt leaves the fuel thin — that's the whole issue. No damage comes while it stays unused, blended into your diesel — only when your engine runs on it.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the liquid as such is simply the wrong one. Because it does not burn, running it through isn't an option. Crystals and corrosion remain after the following fill, and AdBlue separates back out of the diesel, so watering it can't help. That is why the flush matters more, and trying the engine "to see" costs more with AdBlue than nearly any other mistake — in Digmoor or the centre of Tanhouse equally.

The same good news applies as with petrol. Wherever across Lancashire the vehicle has stopped, an unrun motor means the AdBlue still in the reservoir: the simplest part of any fuel system to empty.

AdBlue in a diesel tank in Tanhouse: how it ends up there

No one means to do it. The AdBlue filler on many vehicles rests right next to your diesel filler, occasionally under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light. It mostly takes place outside the house, from a bottle bought en route home, rather than at the forecourt.

Mostly, it occurs in one of a couple of familiar ways. A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up takes place in a hurry outside Hillside Community Primary School. Close to Evenwood, a driver pours a bottle in at home after work. Another pattern: dim light, a pub car park outside The Viking, and a driver opening that flap the first time.

Hired motors, new vehicles, fleet motors, or the spare vehicle in a family with both fuels: the least known vehicles get it most. Wherever you're in Tanhouse or the rest of Lancashire, it's the same error and the same first answer: leave the car off.

Started the motor with AdBlue in your diesel tank around Tanhouse?

Then the AdBlue has left the tank. With any running time, it travels to the high-pressure pump and each injector, having passed through your filter and pipework.

Expect rough running, exhaust smoke, falling power, lights on your dash, or a cut-out — returning from Skelmersdale Henge Park, perhaps, or midway across Tanhouse. When safe, pull over and turn everything off — with no turning it on again to see. More of that is pulled through with each start.

On the M58, under a mile from Tanhouse, the next junction is where to exit, and anywhere sensible is where to park — not driving on.

Every mile pushes the AdBlue further in. That is why crossing Tanhouse to park near The Oaks and a drive of under 15 miles for Liverpool are very distinct jobs. Let us know about how far it had come.

There's more to rinse out once your engine has been run, and our engineers do all of it where your car has stopped. Long-term damage is very unusual if it is noticed soon.

What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve around Tanhouse?

Our engineers come to your car, wherever it has stopped around Tanhouse: a side street near Tanhouse Community Centre, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt. Three replies decide the job, and so first our engineers ask which fluid was put in, roughly the amount, and whether the engine has turned over.

Then the tank is emptied where the car waits, so the polluted fuel and the AdBlue come out together. A careful flush matters much more after AdBlue than with petrol, because residue will not clear away by itself. Fresh diesel goes in after the fuel filter is flushed — or replaced, when it needs to be — and after that your vehicle is tested. If your engine hasn't run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once our technicians arrive. Our equipment is explosion-proof, and so a busy filling station is no issue, and it's hushed enough for a residential street late at night.

Bleeding the fuel system with fresh diesel comes at the end. Whether it is a parking bay outside Upholland or a driveway around Tanhouse, that is where we fire it up and you set off. It is checked on fresh diesel to confirm it runs correctly before we go. No garage is needed at any point, with the whole job done then and there. The insurer will want an engineer's report and your VAT invoice — both yours afterwards.

Tanhouse is a residential suburb, and an on-site drain suits it: whether your car is on a home drive, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt, we drain it where it is, so it never needs to be moved to us.

What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out in Tanhouse?

Because each callouts differ, a flat figure would not be honest. The price shifts first with how long, if at all, your engine has been running, and next with the amount of AdBlue that got in. After that it turns on where your car is and whether our van can get to it safely, which is easier on an open drive than in a tight space behind Quarry Bank Community Centre.

With that reason, each call from Tanhouse begins with the same trio — which fluid was put in, how much, whether it ran — ahead of any figure. Those replies shrink a range down to one figure.

You get that price on the phone, before anyone sets off, and you pay on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing upfront. Look at your policy whilst we are on the way: many include misfuelling cover.
