Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Tannery Yard

AdBlue in your diesel tank? Then keep your motor off — and the ignition as well. Water with urea mixed in it: that's AdBlue. Not like fuel, it neither ignites nor mixes, and no harm happens until the motor pulls it through. Caught before the motor has been run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is around Tannery Yard. Nothing comes before calling 0333 366 0103.

Those opening minutes: AdBlue in the diesel tank around Tannery Yard

To do:

  • Remove the keys, which stops anyone turning the power on.
  • Hazards on, if moving traffic is at all close.
  • So you can give us which fluid it was and about what quantity, save your receipt or the empty bottle.
  • Call just where you are. Say a LS13 4 postcode or the nearest street sign, and nobody has to search for you.

Do not do these:

  • Do not start your motor, even for a moment to move the car.
  • Your ignition remains off: on lots of diesels, switching it on is enough to start the pump.
  • Don't top up with diesel to thin it. AdBlue doesn't mix in diesel; it separates out.
  • Do not drive it anywhere, not even a short way up Hough End Avenue.
  • Do not try to drain the vehicle yourself by the kerbside.

Moving your car away from the island is a job for staff to help with, wherever Tannery Yard forecourt you are on, the BP included. At your own drive, do not touch it at all.

What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

Made for your exhaust, AdBlue has no business in your engine. From a dedicated tank it goes straight to the exhaust, cleaning what the engine lets out. A fuel pump isn't made to cope with it, and AdBlue was never intended to go through one.

It doesn't combine. After it's tipped into a tank of diesel, AdBlue acts nothing like fuel. It is heavier than diesel, and so it sinks and collects at the bottom of that tank, which is where the pickup sucks fuel from. When the pump runs, the AdBlue is first to go through. Before then it waits underneath the diesel, which is why a car filled in Park Spring yesterday and never started remains the simple case, provided no one touches your key.

After it is sucked in, the harm takes two forms. It attacks certain metals found in fuel systems, attacking whatever it reaches till it is removed from the system. And when the water evaporates, the urea forms crystals that block filters and lodge in narrow passages. By daybreak, a car sitting in Tannery Yard with AdBlue through its pipework grows worse; where it is only inside the tank, nothing changes. Diesel lubricates the high-pressure pump and every injector as it flows; water gives no lubrication, and that is a second kind of harm.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in Tannery Yard

Why is AdBlue in a diesel frequently the bigger problem?

Petrol put into a diesel on Morrisons's forecourt leaves the fuel thin — that's the main fault. No harm is done as long as it stays unused, blended into the diesel — only once the motor runs on it.

The trouble with AdBlue in a diesel is a totally unsuitable substance. It doesn't burn, and so it can't just be run through. It does not stay mixed, so it cannot be weakened. And crystals and corrosion don't wash out with the next tank of fuel. That's why the flush counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting the engine "to see" costs more here than nearly anywhere else, whether your car is in Bramley or the middle of Tannery Yard.

The same good news applies as with petrol. If your motor has not run, the AdBlue is still in the tank, and your tank is the quickest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever around West Yorkshire the vehicle is sitting.

How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank in Tannery Yard?

After dark, two caps together — the AdBlue one and the diesel cap, occasionally under one flap — can appear the same. No one means it; many layouts invite it. A container bought while heading home and poured in outside the house, rather than at the filling station, is the typical story.

The ways it takes place are few and familiar. Halfway through the morning drop-off, the dashboard warns, and outside Greenhill Primary School the top-up is rushed. In the evening, a bottle goes in on a drive near Hough End Court. Or a driver new to that flap tops up your car after dark, parked in the car park by Bramley Working Men's Club.

It crops up most in a rental, a brand-new motor, a company vehicle, or the other car in a family with one of each fuel types — the vehicles people use the least. Wherever you are around Tannery Yard or the rest of West Yorkshire, it's the same mistake and the same first answer: leave the car off.

Already started the motor with AdBlue in the diesel tank around Tannery Yard?

Then the AdBlue has left the tank. Through the fuel filter, through the pipework, and — with any running — into the injection pump and each injector: that is how far it travels.

Expect rough running, exhaust smoke, lost power, warnings on the dash, or a stall — returning from Ducky Hills, perhaps, or part way across Tannery Yard. Once safe, pull over then turn everything off — with no turning it on again to see. With each start, more of that is pulled through.

On the M621, under 3 miles from Tannery Yard, the next junction is where to leave, and anywhere safe is where to stop — not driving on.

Distance matters: every mile carries the AdBlue further into the system, and so driving towards Leeds, under 5 miles away, makes a much larger job than hopping across Tannery Yard to the car park by Bramley Lawn Day Centre. Roughly how far it had come is worth telling us.

Our engineers do all of the cleaning where the car has ended up, and once the motor has been run there is more of it. Very seldom does it leave lasting damage when it's spotted soon.

Tannery Yard: how AdBlue is drained from a diesel

A road beside Christ The King, a drive, a lay-by or a filling station: wherever the car has stopped around Tannery Yard, we come to it. Which fluid got in, roughly how much, plus whether the engine has turned over: we check first, since those shape the work.

Next, emptying the tank on the spot takes out the contaminated diesel and the AdBlue together. Residue from AdBlue will not flush out by itself, and so the fuel system gets a full flush, which counts much more here than for petrol. Your filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and the car is tested. About half an hour on site is usual for most jobs where your motor hasn't run. Low-noise enough for use outside a house at night, and safe on a busy forecourt, the pumps are explosion-proof.

The last step is to prime your system on new diesel. Then our engineers start the engine and you drive off, whether from a parking space outside Bramley (West Yorkshire) or a drive in Tannery Yard. We confirm it runs smoothly on new diesel before we leave. No garage is required at any point, with the entire job done then and there. Afterwards, there is the paperwork for the insurer: a VAT invoice and a written report from the engineer.

Tannery Yard has a population of around 6073 residents and is part of the larger Leeds urban area.

AdBlue drains across Tannery Yard and West Yorkshire

AdBlue jobs in Tannery Yard are passed to vans that cover the towns around it — New Scarbro, Hough End as well as Gamble Hill — and much of West Yorkshire beyond, throughout LS postcodes. Close to a border, or anywhere awkward to explain? Asking beats assuming, and so ring.

No moving is needed. In Tannery Yard, a residential suburb, a van that comes to you works: the vehicle is drained on the spot, whether in a drive, a side street, a parking area or a forecourt.

What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out in Tannery Yard?

There is no honest single price, because the jobs aren't the same. The price shifts first with how long, if at all, the engine has been running, and next with the amount of AdBlue that went in. After that it rests on where the vehicle is and whether a van can get to it safely, which is easier on an open driveway than in a tight gap behind Church Hall.

What went in, how much, and whether the engine ran: each Tannery Yard call begins with precisely that, before a figure, never afterwards. Once those are known, a range becomes one firm figure.

Priced on the call before the engineer heads out, the job is paid for that day — card or phone, nothing in advance. While the van is travelling, check your insurance: plenty cover misfuelling.
