AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Teams, and What to Do Next

Everything turns on a single fact: if the engine has started after the AdBlue went in — far more than anything else. Anywhere the vehicle stands — Lobley Hill, Teams — don't run an engine that has not been started yet. Call 0333 366 0103 with the ignition and motor both off. In Teams, such a case is generally drained and cleaned where it stands. Already started? Stop once you safely can, then turn it off. A larger job, then, but the same first move.

Match what happened to a situation from the list below, anywhere in Tyne and Wear you are.

At the petrol pump in Teams: AdBlue in a diesel

You are at the petrol pump, the nozzle or the bottle still in your hand, and you have just noticed the cap you opened was the wrong one. Whether Esso, EV Chargers or somewhere else around Teams, the case is identical.

Meaning? Spotting it here is as good as it gets. The AdBlue is inside the tank and nowhere else. Nothing has pulled it in.

Your move: stay out of the car, however much the queue wants clearing. Ring us from the forecourt once your car is in a space — the attendants will help roll it — then keep the receipt. Our equipment is explosion-proof and fine on a busy forecourt, so a vehicle that can't be pushed away gets cleared right at the petrol pump.

Teams, at home: AdBlue in the diesel tank

The warning light had been on for days. You bought a bottle, poured it in on the drive, and only when you put the empty bottle in the recycling did you look a second time at the cap. Drives close to Derwentwater Road see it as much as any other street.

What it means: if you haven't driven since, this is almost as good as the forecourt. Being reluctant to blend, AdBlue settles low in the tank and stays. A night standing alters none of that.

Next: prevent an early drive by putting your keys indoors, then phone us. Bensham or Teams: whichever your drive sits, that is where it is emptied. Our pumping kit works quietly enough that it won't wake the street at night.

AdBlue drain on a forecourt in Teams

On the road in Teams with AdBlue in a diesel

A short way after filling up, the engine began playing up: rough running, smoke, less power, warnings on the dash. Perhaps it was on Victoria Road, perhaps on the way out towards Newcastle upon Tyne, under 3 miles away.

What it means: the system has sucked the AdBlue in. The high-pressure pump and each injector see it too on a bigger trip, after the fuel filter and pipework have it. Each mile and each restart takes it further.

What to do: pull over where it's safe and switch off. Leave by the next junction — not the services beyond — if you are on the Central Motorway East, under 3 miles from Teams. Starting it again to check achieves nothing — AdBlue doesn't clear on its own. Call us and say how far you went.

AdBlue in the wrong tank: hire, lease and company vehicles

It is a car you have had for a week. On your own car, AdBlue is absent or elsewhere. On this one, its inlet is right next to the diesel inlet — a surprise to you. Throughout Tyne and Wear, no one is immune.

Put simply: one extra step on top of the situations above, which depend on whether it's run. Work on your vehicle often requires the owner's approval under hire or company agreements.

Settling it before we turn up is quicker, so phone the hire company or your fleet manager, and then us. Stuck by Gateshead District Scouts or at Dunston until the firm replies, the vehicle remains switched off throughout.

Not sure it was AdBlue in your diesel tank, Teams?

At times, "I think so" is all anyone can truthfully say. The bottle is lighter than it should be, there's a faint smell of ammonia round your filler, and you cannot remember which cap you took off. It might have been at a friend's driveway in Gateshead, or in a rush by St Aidan's Church of England Primary School on the school run.

Meaning? Drips around the inlet don't touch the engine at all. A diesel tank with AdBlue in it is another story. Turning on the vehicle won't tell you which, and if there is AdBlue in your tank it will pull it in.

What to do: treat it as if it went in. Do not start it. Call us and describe what you saw; we would rather check a tank that turns out free of AdBlue than drain one that has already been run.

What every AdBlue drain in Teams has in common

Whichever situation you are in, the job starts the same way. Our engineers come to the vehicle, whether it is at a forecourt, a drive, the car park outside Teams Social Club or a side street close to Gateshead Redheugh, and ask three things: what got in, about how much, and whether the motor has run. Over the phone, ahead of dispatch, you are told the price, and those replies decide the work too.

AdBlue forms crystals and eats at certain metals in fuel systems, so it does not rinse out unaided; that is why a full flush, after this drain, counts far more here than with petrol. The filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and your car is tested. Where your engine hasn't been started, expect roughly half an hour once we arrive, in most cases.

Finally, our engineers fire it up. Our technicians make sure it runs properly on clean diesel before we go. The whole job is done where your car is, and if it's caught soon, lasting damage is very unusual. For your insurer: the engineer's report and the VAT invoice. For you: payment on the day, no money upfront. Check your insurance while we're en route: misfuelling cover is included in plenty of policies.
