If you are reading before it has happened, the rest of this page is about why it occurs and how to make sure it does not.

AdBlue in a diesel vehicle, and its separate tank

Diesel goes to your engine — yet many modern diesels driven around Tettenhall and Claregate carry another liquid too. Your exhaust, not your engine, is where AdBlue goes: dosed into the fumes to fresh them, from a separate tank.

Every tank has one filler of its own. On a lot of motors the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in your boot or under the bonnet. At the petrol pump, your diesel side gets filled all the time. The AdBlue side is fuelled far less commonly, usually from a bottle, and normally by a person who has to stop and think where it goes. The mistake lives in that gap.

AdBlue in the diesel tank in Tettenhall: how it occurs

It's seldom carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

First, the warning. Low AdBlue brings a warning from your car, and running out leads to limp mode — so a hurried top-up, perhaps before work off Redhouse Road, perhaps at Dog and Gun on the way home that evening.

The old car's filler is where the hand reaches — but a rental car, a new vehicle or a company car keeps the fillers somewhere else. That's a second factor: a new vehicle.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, and so nothing stops the pour once it has started. Stockwell End or the middle of Tettenhall: it takes the same few seconds either way.

Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Before you tip anything, whether on a drive in Palmers Cross or a forecourt around Tettenhall, check these. They take a few seconds.

  • The cap. The AdBlue cap is commonly blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap usually isn't. Read it rather than going by position.
  • The size. On plenty of motors the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.
  • Open the flap and check for a label — many motors show what belongs in which inlet just there.
  • The handbook shows where it is when the filler is not next to your diesel cap: the boot, or under the bonnet.
  • Collecting a hire or company car, say at the car park outside Bilbrook? Check with the person who drove the car last before you set off, not once the light comes on.

Topping up AdBlue without it reaching your diesel tank

On the day the light comes on — anywhere you are in West Midlands — a routine to follow.

  • Pull in on level, motor off, with time to spare — not rushing on the side of Midhurst Grove.
  • Find the AdBlue filler, check the cap, and speak the word "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It seems silly. It does the trick.
  • The diesel cap remains on. Where both share a flap, confirm it is shut before the bottle comes up.
  • Finish when the tank is topped up or the bottle runs dry; before that, tip slowly through the built-in spout.
  • Before you start your car, shut the cap and look again that the diesel cap was never came off.

Stop there if you find, at stage two or three, that you've already poured into the diesel side. Don't go on to stage five.

Put AdBlue in your diesel tank in Tettenhall already?

Don't start your motor: that's where the short order of things begins. On many diesels the ignition alone runs the fuel pump, so do not switch the car on. Filling up with diesel will not thin it: rather than mixing, AdBlue sinks to the bottom of that tank, right where fuel is drawn from.

The staff at Esso, another forecourt nearby or any forecourt will usually lend a hand to push the vehicle away when asked. If you're on your own driveway around Tettenhall, leave it where it sits.

Stop as soon as it is safe and switch off, if the motor has already run. On the M54, under 3 miles from Tettenhall, that means the next junction. Tell us roughly how far it went: a run towards Wolverhampton, under 3 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Tettenhall.

Our arrival in Tettenhall, and what occurs next

The van reaches the car anywhere it stopped — your own drive, beside Tettenhall Paddling Pool, or by Christ Church (Church of England) Junior School. Both the work and our price depend on three replies — which liquid, what quantity, and if it has run — so our engineers ask. You hear that quote by phone, before anybody heads out.

Your system is then purged thoroughly, once that tank is emptied. AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it does not wash out on its own — which is why that matters more with AdBlue than with petrol. The filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the car is tested. The engine is fired up next and tested to make sure it runs correctly, all before we head off.

Most jobs are finished in roughly half an hour after our engineers get there, as long as the motor hasn't run — and the pumps we use are safe on a live forecourt yet quiet after dark beside a house. You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer. Wrong-fuel cover is included in plenty of insurance policies — and so make use of the wait to look at yours.
