Tewin: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

With AdBlue in your diesel tank, the ignition remains off and so does your engine. Water with urea mixed in it: that is AdBlue. It doesn't burn, it does not mix with diesel, and the harm it does begins when your fuel system draws it in. In Tewin, AdBlue in a diesel tank found before the engine runs usually means a drain and a thorough flush, just where your car is. Before you do anything else, call 0333 366 0103.

Those opening minutes: AdBlue in your diesel tank in Tewin

Things to do:

  • Keys out — then nobody can power anything on.
  • Hazards on, if moving traffic is anywhere near.
  • The empty bottle or the receipt tells us the product and the amount, and so don't bin it away.
  • Call us from where you are. A postcode starting AL6 0, or the name of the closest street, gets the van to you without a search.

Things not to do:

  • Shifting the car just a few yards is no reason to fire up the motor.
  • Many diesels run their pump the moment the ignition comes on, so keep the car off.
  • AdBlue does not mix in diesel — it separates out — so adding extra diesel won't weaken it.
  • Any driving at all is best avoided, including a short way down Lower Green.
  • Beside the road, don't attempt draining it yourself.

The staff working at any Tewin filling station — the Morrisons included — will normally lend a hand rolling it clear if you ask. On that drive, your car remains exactly as it was left.

AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

The engine isn't what AdBlue is made for; your exhaust is. Stored in a dedicated tank, it's injected into the exhaust stream to clean the gases. Neither side fits the other: urea doesn't belong in a pump, and an injection pump can't deal with urea.

Inside a diesel tank it acts very differently from fuel. It does not mix in. It's heavier than diesel, and so it sinks and collects at the bottom of your tank, which is where the pickup pulls fuel from. The first thing your fuel system pulls through, after it runs, is the AdBlue. So a motor that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Bramfield last night, and has not been started since, is still the easy case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of your tank, and nothing has sucked it in.

From there it causes two kinds of harm. It eats at certain metals used in fuel components, attacking any part it reaches until it's cleared from the system. And once the water goes, the urea forms crystals that block filters and lodge in narrow channels. Overnight, a vehicle sitting in Tewin with AdBlue in its lines gets worse; if it's just inside your tank, nothing changes. Diesel lubricates the high-pressure pump and every injector as it flows; water offers none of that, and that is a second kind of damage.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in Tewin

Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is regularly worse

Put petrol in a diesel at the Esso and you have a fault of thin fuel. It mixes with the diesel, and whilst it's inside the tank it causes no damage; the harm comes from running your motor on it.

The trouble with AdBlue in a diesel is a totally unsuitable substance. It doesn't burn, and so it cannot just be run through. Nor can it be watered down, because it separates again — and the next fill won't rinse away crystals or corrosion. So the flush counts for more here, and trying your engine "to see", in the centre of Tewin or out in Panshanger, does more harm than almost any other slip.

The same good news applies as with petrol. Not started? Then the AdBlue sits only in your tank, the easiest section of the entire system to clear, wherever your vehicle has stopped across Hertfordshire.

How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank in Tewin?

Many motors put the AdBlue filler alongside the diesel cap, occasionally behind a single flap, and in dim light the two may appear identical. Nobody means it. It mostly occurs at home, from a bottle bought en route home, rather than at the forecourt.

A couple of familiar ways cover the majority of them. A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up occurs in a hurry outside Tewin Cowper Church of England Voluntary Aided Primary School. Close to Cannons Meadow, a driver tips a container in on that drive after work. Otherwise, in dim light by The Rose and Crown, your vehicle is refilled by a driver using that flap for the first time.

Hired motors, brand-new motors, company motors, or the second vehicle in a family with one of each: the least familiar cars see it the most. An identical slip, same first response — keep it switched off — wherever you are around Tewin or the rest of Hertfordshire.

Started the engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank in Tewin?

The AdBlue has left that tank, then. Through the fuel filter, along the pipework, and — with any running — on to the high-pressure pump and each injector: that is how far it travels.

You may notice your engine running roughly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, maybe on the way back from Margery Wood or halfway across Tewin. Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and don't restart it to check. Every start pulls more of that through.

On the A1(M), under 3 miles from Tewin, the next junction is where to exit, and anywhere sensible is where to stop — not driving on.

Hopping across Tewin to the car park by St. Peter's Church is one matter; driving towards St Albans, under 10 miles away, is something else, since each mile pushes the AdBlue further in. So mileage matters. About how far it had come is worth telling us.

Wherever the car came to a halt is where all of it gets done, even with more to flush once your engine has been running. When it's caught soon, lasting damage is very uncommon.

What emptying AdBlue from a diesel involves around Tewin

A road beside Marden Hill House, a driveway, a layby or a filling station: wherever your car has come to rest around Tewin, our technicians come to it. What went in, about the quantity, plus if the engine has turned over: our engineers check first, because those decide the work.

Next, draining your tank on the spot removes the polluted diesel along with the AdBlue in one go. The system is cleaned thoroughly, which matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, since what it leaves behind doesn't rinse out on its own. The filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested. Engine not run? In that case expect roughly half an hour on site for most jobs. Quiet enough to use outside a house at night, and fine on a busy forecourt, our pumps are explosion-proof.

New diesel goes in to bleed your system, and that is the last step. After that our technicians start the engine and you head off, whether from a parking space at Welwyn North or a driveway around Tewin. The test before our engineers leave is that it runs smoothly on fresh diesel. No garage is needed at any point, with the entire job done then and there. You get a VAT invoice and an engineer report after that, which is what insurers ask for.

What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right around Tewin

There is no honest single price, because the jobs aren't the same. Three things move the cost: whether your engine has run and for how long, how much AdBlue got in, and where your car is. That last one turns on whether our van can reach it safely, and an open drive is simpler than a tight space behind Burnham Green Village Hall.

What went in, what quantity, and if it ran: each Tewin enquiry begins with exactly that, before a quote, never afterwards. Given those replies, a range shrinks to one firm figure.

Before anyone sets off, you are told our price by phone. Then you pay on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing in advance. As the van is on the way, dig out your insurance: plenty include misfuelling.
