What Now? AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in The Cliff

Has your motor turned over since the AdBlue was put in? This single question decides nearly everything about what comes next. Over in Lower Kersal or here around The Cliff, an unrun engine must remain that way. Switch nothing on, ring 0333 366 0103, and count on a thorough flush plus a drain, done just where the vehicle sits in The Cliff. Already started? Pull over when you safely can, then turn it off. The job is bigger, yet the first step is the same.

Further down: the situations our engineers see, wherever across Greater Manchester. Pick yours.

AdBlue in a diesel on a The Cliff forecourt

Picture it: standing by the pump, holding the bottle, you realise the cap you opened was not the right one. Maybe you're at the Texaco, perhaps at the Shell, perhaps somewhere else around The Cliff.

What it means: this is the ideal spot to find out. The AdBlue is inside that tank and nowhere else. Nothing has sucked it in.

What to do: do not get back in and fire it up to clear the pump. Ring us from the forecourt once your vehicle is in a space — the staff will lend a hand to roll it — and save the bottle. Emptying it there at the pump is fine when it can't be moved, because the equipment is explosion-proof.

AdBlue in the diesel tank at home around The Cliff

For days the dash had been nagging you. Picked up a bottle, poured it in at home, recycled the empty — and only then looked at the cap a second time, too late. Homes just off Scovell Street are caught out as much as everywhere else.

Meaning? Provided the vehicle hasn't moved since, it's close to the forecourt case. AdBlue does not mix with diesel; it sinks to the bottom of the tank and waits there. Overnight does not change that.

What to do: leave your keys inside the house so no one moves the car in the morning. Then ring. Out in HIgher Broughton or here in The Cliff, the draining happens at your driveway. The pumps are quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

On the road in The Cliff with AdBlue in a diesel

A mile or two after topping up, the engine started misbehaving: roughness, smoke, lost power, warnings on the dash. It might have been driving to Manchester, under 3 miles away, or simply along Duncan Street.

The point: your system has pulled AdBlue in already. Past the filter, through the pipework, and — the further the mileage — on into the high-pressure pump and every injector. Each mile and each restart takes it further.

Your move: pull up somewhere sensible, then turn the motor off. On the M602, under 3 miles from The Cliff, that means the next junction, not the services further on. No test restarts: clearing itself is not something AdBlue will do. Call, saying how far the car was driven.

Hire, lease or company car with AdBlue in the wrong tank

A week ago, it was unknown to you. Your own motor either has no AdBlue or puts it elsewhere, so nothing told you the AdBlue cap sits right next to your diesel. It can happen to anyone, anywhere across Greater Manchester.

The upshot: just as above, divided by whether it ran, only with an added step. Plenty of rental and company contracts require the owner's sign-off before repairs.

Settling it before the van arrives is faster, so phone the rental company or your fleet manager, and then us. If you are stranded in the car park outside Salford Crescent, or by St John the Evangelist, whilst you wait for an answer, leave the vehicle off.

AdBlue in your diesel tank? Not sure, around The Cliff

Occasionally the honest answer is "I think so". A faint ammonia smell hangs around the filler, the bottle feels too light, and which cap came off is hard to recall. Perhaps it happened in a hurry at the school gates at St Boniface RC Primary School, or on a friend's drive in Charlestown.

Meaning? Drips around the inlet never touch the motor at all. The diesel tank with AdBlue in it is another matter. Turning on your car won't tell you which, and if there is AdBlue in that tank it will pull it in.

Next: act as though it went in, and leave your engine off. Phone with what you saw: we'd sooner confirm a tank free of AdBlue than empty one once your engine has run.

Every AdBlue drain in The Cliff shares these stages

No matter the case, a single start is used. Three things are asked once our engineers arrive — at a forecourt, a drive, a road beside Broughton Cricket and Rugby Club or the car park outside Star Inn: the liquid, the amount, and whether the motor has been started. Those replies decide the work, and you get the quote by phone, before anyone heads out.

Draining your tank comes first, then a careful flush — more vital with urea than with petrol, because crystals and corrosion won't clear by themselves, however long you wait. Last come the fuel filter, cleaned or replaced if necessary; clean diesel; and a test of your vehicle. Never started? Then roughly half an hour once we are there is most jobs.

The final step is firing it up. With fresh diesel in, it runs while our technicians confirm it's running correctly, and then we leave. Our technicians do the whole job where the vehicle is, and lasting damage is very rare when it has been caught soon. For your insurer: an engineer's report and the VAT invoice. For you: payment on the day, no money in advance. Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it is worth checking yours while we're on the way.

Centre of The Cliff or a lay-by near the green space at the edge of the village: wherever it sits, your vehicle doesn't need to shift at all for the drain. The drain is done right there. Awkward to explain? Close to Broughton Library or a border? Checking is better than guessing, so ring.
