The Flatts: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Find Your Situation
Has the engine run since the AdBlue got in? This one point decides nearly everything else from here. Anywhere the vehicle is — The Leys, The Flatts — don't start a motor that hasn't been started yet. Normally this is emptying and thoroughly purging it right there in The Flatts — so keep the key and motor off and phone 0333 366 0103. Already started? Pull over once safe, then switch it off. The job is bigger, yet the first stage is the same.
Below: the cases our engineers meet, wherever around West Midlands. Pick the one that fits.
The Flatts forecourt: AdBlue in a diesel at the pump
Imagine it: standing by the pump, holding the nozzle, you spot the filler you opened wasn't the correct one. Possibly you're at the Texaco, possibly at the another forecourt nearby, perhaps somewhere else around The Flatts.
Meaning? Spotting it on the forecourt is the best it gets. Still in your tank, with nothing pulled onwards: that is where the AdBlue sits.
Clearing the petrol pump is no reason to run it — and so do not get back in. Have the attendants to help rolling it to a bay, hold on to the bottle, then phone us from there. Can't move the vehicle by the pump? Explosion-proof kit makes a live forecourt sensible, so it can be drained where it is.
The Flatts, at home: AdBlue in your diesel tank
Several days had passed with the dash light on. Only at the recycling bin, the empty container in your hand, did you look back at the cap you had used on the driveway. Right off Heath Road is not different from anywhere.
Meaning? Provided your vehicle hasn't moved since, it is second to the pump case. Diesel and AdBlue stay separate: the AdBlue drops to the base of your tank and remains there, however long it waits.
Put your keys in the house tonight — or a person may take it off first thing — and phone us. Darlaston Green or The Flatts: wherever your driveway is, that's where it gets emptied. The pumps are quiet enough to use outside a house at night.
AdBlue in a diesel and already driving in The Flatts?
You filled up, set off, and a mile or two later the engine began to run roughly, smoke, lose power or light up the dashboard. Anywhere on Simmonds Place or heading towards Wolverhampton — under 5 miles away.
In short: the AdBlue has been pulled into the system. Through the filter, through the lines, and — the further the distance — on into the injection pump and each injector. Each mile and each restart takes it further.
Next: pick a safe spot, stop, and turn the engine off. The Flatts lies under a mile from the M6; there, come off at the first junction instead of pushing on to the services. It won't have cleared, and so there's no point restarting to check. Ring us and say how far you travelled.
Hire, lease or company car with AdBlue in the wrong tank
Seven days back, it was unknown to you. On your own car, AdBlue is absent or somewhere else. On this one, the cap is just next to your diesel inlet — news to you. Any driver, wherever across West Midlands, could make it.
What it means: the same as the situations above, depending on whether it's run, with one more step. Plenty of hire and company contracts want the owner to approve work on your car.
Sorting it before we arrives is quicker, so ring the hire company or your fleet manager, and then us. Stranded by Samaj Mandal or at Darlaston till the firm replies, the vehicle stays turned off the whole time.
Not sure it was AdBlue in the diesel tank, The Flatts?
At times, "I think so" is the most you can honestly say. A slight ammonia whiff lingers around your filler, the bottle feels too light, and which cap came off is a blur. It might have been at a friend's driveway in Bentley, or in a rush outside Salisbury Primary School at the school run.
In short: spillage round your filler does your engine unharmed. A diesel tank with AdBlue in it is a different story. You can't tell which by turning the ignition, and doing so will pull in any AdBlue that is in your tank.
Assume it went in, and don't turn your key. Describe what you saw on the phone. A clear tank checked is a happier result than an already-run one emptied.
The common ground in each The Flatts AdBlue drain
The job begins identically, whatever your situation. Forecourt, drive, The Globe Inn's car park or a road beside Masjid-E-Umar — our van comes to the vehicle, and three answers follow: what liquid, what quantity, and if it has run. Those replies settle the work, and you hear our price on the phone, before anybody sets off.
Then the tank is drained and the fuel system rinsed thoroughly, which counts more with AdBlue than with petrol: AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't rinse out on its own. Next is the filter — flushed, or replaced when needed — then fresh diesel, and a test of the vehicle. If the motor hasn't run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we are there.
Finally, we start it. Before our engineers head off, it is checked to make sure it runs smoothly on new diesel. Permanent damage is very rare if it is noticed early, and the whole job is done where the vehicle is. For your insurer: the engineer's report and the VAT invoice. For you: payment on the day, no money upfront. Many insurance policies include misfuelling, and so check yours while the van travels.
