What Now? AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in The Green

Has your motor run since the AdBlue was put in? This single point settles nearly everything about what comes next. Not run yet? Then keep the car like that, whether your vehicle is — The Green or Beechwood. Normally this means draining and properly rinsing it on the spot around The Green — and so leave the ignition and engine off then ring 0333 366 0103. Where your motor has run, stop safely straight away, then switch the vehicle off. The job is bigger, but the first stage is the same.

Find the situation below that matches yours, wherever around West Yorkshire it happened.

AdBlue in a diesel on a The Green forecourt

Picture it: stood by the petrol pump, gripping the bottle, you spot the filler you opened wasn't the correct one. Perhaps you're at the Tesco, possibly at the BP, perhaps somewhere else in The Green.

Meaning? Finding out on the forecourt is the best it gets. Just that tank holds AdBlue; no part beyond it has taken it in.

What to do: do not get back in and start the vehicle to clear the pump. Ask the staff to help you roll the vehicle into a parking spot, keep the till receipt or the bottle, and ring us from the forecourt. If it cannot be moved, it can be drained at the petrol pump: the equipment is explosion-proof and safe on a working forecourt.

AdBlue in your diesel tank on a The Green drive?

On your dash, a reminder had been lit all week. Picked up a bottle, tipped it in at home, recycled the empty — and only then looked at the cap again, too late. Houses just off The Green get hit as much as anywhere else.

The upshot: no driving since makes it almost as good to spotting it at the petrol pump. Diesel and AdBlue keep separate: the AdBlue settles to the floor of the tank and stays put, no matter how long the night.

What to do: leave your keys inside the house so no one moves the vehicle in the morning. Then ring. In Brianside or here in The Green, the drain happens at your drive. Night-time empties outside a house are no problem: the pumps are quiet.

On the road in The Green with AdBlue in a diesel

A mile or two beyond filling up, your engine began misbehaving: rough running, smoke, lost power, warnings on the dash. Possibly it was on York Road, maybe on the way out towards Leeds, under 5 miles away.

Meaning? The pump has taken the AdBlue in. Past your filter, through the pipework, and — the further the distance — deeper into the high-pressure pump and every injector. More miles, more restarts: further it travels.

Stop somewhere safe — that is the next job — then switch it off. Service stations farther along are too far: on the M1, under 3 miles out of The Green, use the first junction. It won't have cleared, so there is no sense starting it again to check. Call us and say how far you went.

AdBlue in the wrong tank: hire, lease and company cars

A week back, the car was new to you. Your own car either has no AdBlue or keeps it somewhere different, so nothing warned you the AdBlue inlet sits right next to the diesel. It can happen to anyone, anywhere in West Yorkshire.

What it means: the same as the scenarios above, depending on whether it has run, with one more step. Plenty of rental and company agreements require the owner's sign-off before work.

Sorting it before the van arrives is faster, so phone the hire company or your fleet manager, then us. Stuck near St. James', Seacroft or outside Cross Gates until someone answers, the vehicle remains switched off throughout.

AdBlue in the diesel tank? Not sure, around The Green

At times, "I think so" is the most anyone can honestly say. What cap came off, you cannot recall; but the bottle weighs less than it ought to, and a whiff of ammonia hangs by your filler. The gates of Swarcliffe Primary School in a rush, perhaps, or someone's driveway out in Cross Gates.

Meaning? Drips around the filler never reach the engine at all. AdBlue inside your diesel tank does. If there is AdBlue in that tank, turning on your car will pull it in, and it wouldn't tell you which either.

Take it that it was put in, and never turn your key. Checking a tank that proves clean beats emptying one once it's been run — so ring then tell us what you saw.

Each AdBlue drain around The Green shares these stages

The job opens identically, whatever your situation. Three questions come once our engineers reach your car — at a forecourt, a drive, a road by Seacroft Village Hall or the car park outside Cricketers Arms: the fluid, the amount, and whether the motor has been started. The price is given on the call, ahead of anyone setting off, and the answers set the work.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to certain metals in fuel systems, so it won't rinse out unaided; that is why a full flush, after this drain, counts much more here than with petrol. Clean diesel goes in once the filter is flushed or replaced, and the car is then checked. Not started? Then about half an hour on site is most jobs.

We fire it up last. With fresh diesel in, it runs while our technicians check it's running smoothly, and then we head off. We do the entire job where the vehicle is, and long-term damage is very unusual if it has been noticed quickly. For your insurer: the engineer's report and the VAT invoice. For you: payment on the day, nothing in advance. Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it's worth checking yours whilst we're on the way.
