AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in The Lunt: What Now?

One thing matters above all when AdBlue is in a diesel tank, and that is whether your engine has run since. Wherever your vehicle stands — Rough Hay, The Lunt — don't run a motor that hasn't run yet. Phone 0333 366 0103 with the ignition and engine both off. In The Lunt, that is typically drained and flushed on the spot. Pull over the minute you safely can then turn off, if it has already run. It is a larger job, yet stage one doesn't change.

At the petrol pump around The Lunt: AdBlue in a diesel

Just now, nozzle yet in your hand, it dawns on you that the cap you took off was the wrong one, right at the pump. Whether Texaco, Morrisons or anywhere else around The Lunt, the case is identical.

What it means: this is the ideal location to find out. Only your tank holds AdBlue; no part beyond it has drawn any in.

Next: avoid the urge to fire it up only to move away from the petrol pump. Have the attendants to help pushing it into a bay, hold on to the receipt, then phone us from there. Can't move it by the petrol pump? Explosion-proof kit keeps a busy forecourt sensible, so we can drain the vehicle in place.

The Lunt, at home: AdBlue in your diesel tank

Days had passed with the dash light on. You bought a bottle, poured it in on the driveway, and only when you put the empty bottle in the recycling did you look once more at the cap. Houses just off Kempthorne Road get caught out as often as everywhere else.

What it means: if you have not driven since, this is nearly as good as the forecourt. As it is unable to mix, AdBlue settles low in the tank and stays. One night parked changes none of that.

What to do: leave the keys inside the house so no one moves the vehicle in the morning. Then ring. Out in St Chads or here in The Lunt, the drain happens at your drive. Even at night, our pumps are quiet enough for a residential street.

AdBlue drain on a forecourt in The Lunt

Set off with AdBlue in a diesel in The Lunt?

Lumpy running, smoke, lost power or a lit dashboard arrived a mile or two beyond the top-up. Marbury Drive, perhaps, or the way towards Wolverhampton — a run of under 5 miles.

The upshot: the system has pulled AdBlue in already. The high-pressure pump and each injector get it as well on a longer trip, after the filter and lines have it. More driving, more starts: deeper it travels.

Do this: pull up somewhere safe, then switch the engine off. Leave by the next junction — not the services further along — if you are on the M6, under 3 miles from The Lunt. Starting it again to test achieves nothing — AdBlue doesn't clear itself. About what distance had it go? Tell us as you phone.

AdBlue in the wrong tank of a hire, lease or company car

A week back, it was unknown to you. Your own motor either does without AdBlue or puts it elsewhere, and so no one warned you the AdBlue cap sits right beside your diesel. Across West Midlands, nobody is immune.

Put simply: an extra stage on top of the situations above, which turn on if it's run. The owner often needs to approve any work, under plenty of rental and fleet agreements.

Next: ring the rental company or your fleet manager first, and then us — sorting it before we arrive is quicker. Hanging on for a reply in the car park outside Willenhall, or near Bilston Oak? Keep your engine off meanwhile.

Unsure about AdBlue in the diesel tank in The Lunt?

At times the fair answer is "I think so". Lighter, that bottle; a trace of ammonia near the filler; no clear recollection of which cap. Look familiar? It might have been on a friend's driveway in Portobello, or in a rush outside Field View Primary School at the school run.

Put simply: a spill near your filler does the engine unharmed. If it's inside the diesel tank, though, it does. You can't tell which by turning the ignition, and doing so would pull in any AdBlue that is in your tank.

Do this: act as though it got in, and don't start your engine. Ring with the details: we would rather find a clean tank than drain one after your motor has run.

Each AdBlue drain in The Lunt shares these stages

No matter the case, a single start applies. We come to the vehicle, whether it's on a forecourt, a driveway, the car park at The Oak and Ivy or a side street close to Hovering Kestrel, and ask three things: what went in, about how much, and if the engine has been run. Over the phone, ahead of anything else, you hear our quote, and those answers decide the job too.

AdBlue forms crystals and is corrosive to some metals used in fuel systems, and so it does not wash out unaided; that is why a full flush, after this drain, matters much more here than with petrol. Finally come the filter, cleaned or renewed as needed; fresh diesel; and a check of your vehicle. Where the motor has not been started, expect roughly half an hour once we arrive, for most cases.

Finally, we start the car. Our test that it runs correctly on clean diesel comes before our technicians go. The whole job is done where your car is, and when it is noticed quickly, long-term damage is very unusual. For your insurer: the engineer's report and the VAT invoice. For you: payment that day, nothing in advance. Plenty of insurance policies cover misfuelling, and so check yours as we head over.
