The Manor: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off
With AdBlue in your diesel tank, the ignition remains off and so does your motor. Chemically, AdBlue is simply urea in water. Unlike fuel, it neither ignites nor mixes, and no harm starts till the motor sucks it round. Caught before your engine has run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is generally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is around The Manor. Call 0333 366 0103 before you do anything else.
Those opening minutes: AdBlue in the diesel tank around The Manor
Things to do:
- Pull your keys out, and so nobody switches your ignition on.
- If you're anywhere near moving traffic, put your hazards on.
- The empty bottle or the till receipt shows us the fluid and the amount, so do not bin it out.
- Ring us from where you are. A postcode starting WV13 2, or the name of the closest street, brings our van to you without a search.
Don't do these:
- Do not start your motor, even for a moment to move your car.
- Many diesels run their fuel pump the moment the ignition comes on, and so leave it off.
- Do not top up with diesel to dilute it. AdBlue does not dilute in diesel; it separates out.
- Even a short distance along Pinson Road is too far to drive the vehicle.
- No draining it yourself, either, at the roadside.
On a forecourt around The Manor, whether it's the Morrisons or another one, ask the staff to help you push the vehicle away from the petrol pump. Stopped on your own drive? Then it stays exactly as it is.
AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there
Not your engine but your exhaust is where AdBlue belongs. From a dedicated reservoir it goes directly to your exhaust, treating what the motor lets out. Not one side suits the other: urea doesn't belong in a pump, and an injection pump cannot deal with urea.
It doesn't combine. After it's poured into a tank of diesel, AdBlue behaves nothing like fuel. It drops, since it is heavier than diesel, and pools low where the intake takes its supply from. Once the system runs, the AdBlue is first to go through. Until then it sits underneath your diesel, and that is why a car filled in Wellington Place last night and not started stays the simple case, as long as nobody touches the key.
Once it's drawn in, the harm takes two forms. As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it's corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, and so it keeps working on the parts it reaches for as long as it remains there. Pipes carrying AdBlue mean harm overnight for a car sitting around The Manor. Only inside that tank, it stays the same. And there is the water: it offers no protection to the components that rely on it the most — the high-pressure pump and every injector.
AdBlue in a diesel: why it's commonly worse than petrol
An issue of thin fuel is what you get after filling a diesel with petrol at the another forecourt nearby. No damage is done while it stays put, blended into the diesel — only once the engine works on it.
With AdBlue in a diesel, the liquid as such is simply the wrong one. Because it does not burn, running it through is not an option. Nor can it be watered down, because it separates back out — and the next fill will not clear away crystals or corrosion. So the flush matters for more with AdBlue, and trying your engine "to see", in the centre of The Manor or out in Summerford Place, does more harm than almost any other error.
With AdBlue, the good news is no different from petrol. Emptying a tank is the easiest part on a fuel system, and with no start-up, the AdBlue remains in it — wherever across West Midlands the car has stopped.
AdBlue in a diesel tank around The Manor: how it ends up there
Many cars put the AdBlue filler alongside the diesel one, now and then under one flap, and in dim light the two can look identical. No one means it. It mostly takes place outside the house, from a bottle bought on the journey home, rather than at the forecourt.
A couple of familiar ways cover most cases. Midway through the drop-off, the dashboard warns, and outside St Giles Church of England Primary School the refill is rushed. Close to Dartmouth Avenue, a driver pours a bottle in at home in the evening. Otherwise, after dark by The Falcon Inn, your car gets refilled by a driver opening that flap for the first time.
It happens most in the motors drivers know least: a hire car, a new motor, a company car, or the second car of a household with one diesel and one petrol. Anywhere around West Midlands, The Manor included, the slip does not change, and neither does the first response: keep it off.
Started the motor with AdBlue in the diesel tank around The Manor?
Then that tank is no longer where the AdBlue is. Via your filter, through the lines, and — with any running — into the high-pressure pump and each injector: that is where it has gone.
Perhaps returning from Black Country Millennium Forest, or part way across The Manor, your motor might run lumpy, smoke, drop pace, flash the dash or cut out. No restarting to check: stop when safe, then turn everything off. With each start, more of that is pulled through.
The Manor lies under 3 miles from the M6; if you were on it, exit at the next junction and pull up somewhere safe instead of driving on.
How far it went matters. A couple of hundred yards across The Manor to the car park by The Salvation Army - Willenhall is a very different job from a run towards Wolverhampton, under 5 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into your system with every mile. About how far it had come is worth telling us.
Wherever the car came to a halt is where all of it gets done, even with more to rinse out after the engine has been running. Very seldom does it leave lasting damage when it is caught soon.
What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve in The Manor?
The vehicle stays where it is, whether that is a street near Willenhall War Memorial, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt around The Manor, and the van comes to it. What got in, about the quantity, and whether your engine has turned over: our engineers ask first, because those shape the job.
Next, emptying your tank on the spot takes out the polluted diesel and the AdBlue together. With AdBlue, more so than with petrol, the flush counts: the whole system is cleaned right through since what remains will not wash out by itself. Fresh diesel goes in once your filter is cleaned — or replaced, when it needs to be — and then your vehicle is tested. Most of these jobs are a half-hour visit once our technicians arrive, if your motor has not run. Quiet enough to use outside a house at night, and fine on a working forecourt, our pumps are explosion-proof.
Last, the system is primed with fresh diesel. You head off as soon as we have fired it up, and it makes no difference whether the car is on a drive in The Manor or in a space at Willenhall. It is checked on fresh diesel to confirm it runs properly before we leave. Since the job is done in full where your car is, a workshop never comes into it. You receive a VAT invoice and an engineer report later on, which is what insurers want.

What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out in The Manor?
Because the jobs vary, a single price wouldn't be honest. What shifts the price is, first, whether your engine has run and for how long; then how much AdBlue went in; and finally where your car is and whether our van can get to it safely, which is simpler on an open drive than in a tight spot behind St Stephen's.
That's why every call from The Manor starts with the same three queries, asked before giving a figure, not after: what was put in, how much, and whether it has run. Those replies shrink a range down to a single number.
Quoted by phone before the engineer heads out, it is settled on the day — card or phone, no deposit. Check your policy whilst we're on the way: plenty carry misfuelling cover.

Then, the most helpful thing to do with your car is to leave it. Motor off, keys out, ignition off. Ring 0333 366 0103 then tell us it is AdBlue, about how much, and whether it has run. Petrol in Diesel takes it from there, in The Manor or anywhere in West Midlands.
