Preventing AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in The Rangers: Why It Happens

Keep your engine and ignition off and phone 0333 366 0103 first — reading can wait if AdBlue is already in your diesel tank. Caught before the motor runs, it's generally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is around The Rangers. Nothing happened yet? Below, the rest of the page explains the why it happens and the how to prevent it for good.

Why does AdBlue in a diesel car need its own filler?

Not one fluid but two: that is how many modern diesels near The Rangers and Townsend carry, with diesel feeding your engine. AdBlue goes to your exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Separate tanks, different fillers. Under one flap, side by side: that's the arrangement on many cars. Elsewhere, AdBlue's filler is beneath the bonnet or in the boot instead. The diesel side is topped up at the petrol pump all the time. Rarely filled, AdBlue usually comes from a bottle, tipped by a driver who must stop and think which cap to use. The error lives in that gap.

How AdBlue in the diesel tank takes place around The Rangers

Three things tend to come together, and carelessness is seldom one of them.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the car tells you, and if it runs out completely, your vehicle drops into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a driveway off Welling Close before work, or in the car park outside The Hoptician on the way home.

Then, your hand reaches for the cap it knew on the old car — because a rental car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers where your last one didn't.

No part halts the pour after it has started, since a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as readily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits. The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of The Rangers or out in Highfields.

Telling the AdBlue filler from your diesel filler

Before you tip anything, whether on a drive in Pitt Court or a forecourt in The Rangers, check these. They take a few seconds.

  • Where it sits misleads; the cap doesn't. AdBlue caps are often blue or bear the name "AdBlue" — diesel ones usually don't.
  • Look at the size: the smaller filler neck is, on plenty of cars, the AdBlue one.
  • A label inside the fuel flap frequently shows which fuel goes where, on many motors. Look for it.
  • The handbook. If the filler is not by your diesel cap, it's in your boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.
  • Picking up a hire or company car, say at the car park at Cam & Dursley? Check with the person who drove the vehicle last before you set off, not once the light comes on.

Keeping AdBlue out of your diesel tank when you top up

The day the light comes on, wherever around Gloucestershire, follow this routine.

  • Pull in somewhere level, motor off, with time in hand — not rushing on the side of Rangers Avenue.
  • Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, after you find the AdBlue filler and reading it. Silly, yes, but it does the trick.
  • The two under a single flap? So confirm the lid on the diesel side is still shut before lifting the bottle.
  • Slowly is best, through the bottle's own spout, till it's full or the bottle is empty.
  • Before starting the car, shut the cap and check a second time that the diesel cap never opened off.

Stop there if you find, at stage two or three, that you've already poured into your diesel side. Stage five stays off limits.

Put AdBlue in the diesel tank in The Rangers already?

Short order, then. First: the motor remains off. The fuel pump runs on plenty of diesels as soon as your ignition is switched on — and so keep it off. Don't top up with diesel to thin it: AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where the fuel is sucked from.

Ask the attendants to help roll your car away from the petrol pump if you're on a forecourt — the Texaco, the Shell or anywhere else. At home in The Rangers? So your car stays where it is.

If your motor has already run, stop as soon as it is safe and switch off. The next exit is the place to come off if you're on the M5, under 3 miles from The Rangers. About how far did it go? Hopping across The Rangers is less work than a run of under 15 miles towards Gloucester, and so tell us.

When we get there around The Rangers, what takes place?

Our van comes to the vehicle wherever it has come to rest — your own driveway, beside St Mark, or outside Dursley Church of England Primary Academy. What liquid got in, the quantity, and whether it ran: our technicians ask since those replies set both work and quote. That price is given on the call, before any van leaves.

Draining the tank comes next, followed by a thorough flush of the system. Not like petrol, AdBlue leaves crystals and attacks some fuel-system metals, and none of that clears out unaided. Hence it matters more. Filter cleaned or, where it must be, swapped; fresh diesel in; then a check of your vehicle. Before we go, we fire it up and confirm that it is running correctly.

Most jobs are done in about half an hour after we arrive, provided the motor has not run — and the pumps our engineers use are safe on a live forecourt yet quiet after dark outside a house. Paying happens on the day, not upfront, and you are given the paperwork an insurer asks for: an engineer's report and a VAT invoice. It's worth checking your insurance while we travel to you: misfuelling cover comes with plenty of policies.
