Why does AdBlue in a diesel vehicle need its own filler?

Many modern diesels around Eastfield, like those in Thornton, carry on two liquids; the motor takes just the diesel. Your exhaust, not the motor, is where AdBlue goes: dosed into the fumes to fresh it, from its own tank.

Each tank has its own filler. Some cars keep the AdBlue filler in the boot or under the bonnet; plenty of others have both together behind one flap. At the pump, the diesel side gets filled all the time. Much less commonly, the AdBlue side gets topped up — normally from a bottle, by a person thinking about where it goes. Mistakes happen in that gap between the two.

How does AdBlue in the diesel tank take place around Thornton?

Rarely is it carelessness: usually three things coincide.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low your car tells you, and if it runs out altogether, the vehicle goes into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a drive off Strathore Road before work, or in the car park at Station Hotel on the way home.

Next, your hand goes for the cap it would have used on the old vehicle — since a hire car, a new motor or a company car places the fillers somewhere your last one didn't.

Nothing halts the pour once it has started, because a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits. Northend or the heart of Thornton: it is the same few seconds in both.

Telling the AdBlue filler from your diesel filler

Be it a Thornton forecourt or a driveway out in Pitteuchar, spend a couple of seconds over these before any goes in.

  • The cap. The AdBlue cap is commonly blue, or marked "AdBlue". Your diesel cap normally is not. Read it instead of going by where it sits.
  • On plenty of cars, the size gives it away: AdBlue has the smaller filler neck.
  • Open the filler flap and check for a label — many motors show which belongs in each inlet just there.
  • The handbook. If your filler is not by your diesel cap, it's in the boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.
  • The previous driver knows. Ask when you pick up a rental or fleet car — from Glenrothes with Thornton's car park, say — rather than when the light appears.

Keeping AdBlue out of your diesel tank when you top up

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever across Fife that is.

  • Pull in on level, engine off, with time to spare — never hurried on the side of Main Street.
  • Daft as it sounds, speaking "AdBlue" aloud while you unscrew the cap does the trick — after you've found your filler and read the cap.
  • The two behind one flap? Then make sure the cap on the diesel side is still closed ahead of raising the bottle.
  • Using the bottle's own spout, tip slowly — and stop when it's full or the bottle is empty.
  • Shut the cap, and look again — making sure the diesel cap stayed shut the whole time. Only then, start the car.

Spot at stage two or three that it's already gone into the diesel side? So stop just there. Step five is out.

Put AdBlue in the diesel tank in Thornton already?

Then the order of things is short. Don't start the motor. Don't switch the ignition on; on plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump. Do not top up with diesel to thin it: AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where your fuel is pulled from.

On a forecourt — BP, Asda or any other — the attendants will normally help push your car clear, if you ask. Your own driveway around Thornton is the place it stays.

Already started? Stop once it's sensible, then switch off. Thornton lies under 10 miles from the M90; on it, take the next exit. Tell us about how far it went: a run towards Dunfermline, under 15 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Thornton.

Our arrival around Thornton, and what occurs next

We come to your car wherever it has stopped, whether that's outside the local primary school, near Thornton Town Hall or on your own driveway. The answers determine the work and the price, and so we ask what got in, about how much, and whether it has run. During the call itself, you are told the quote — before anything else.

Then that tank is emptied and your system cleaned thoroughly. More than with petrol, it counts with AdBlue: crystals form, certain metals are attacked, and nothing clears out unaided, however long it is left. The fuel filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and your car is tested. The motor is fired up next and tested to confirm it runs correctly, all before our technicians go.

Using pumps fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough for use outside a house at night, most jobs in which the motor hasn't run take roughly half an hour after our engineers are there. The insurer will ask for an engineer's report and your VAT invoice, and you get both once the job is done. Payment is on the day, with no deposit. Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it is worth checking yours while we're on the way.
