AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Thorrington? Don't Start It

Engine off, ignition off: that is how you start if AdBlue has got into your diesel tank. Water with urea mixed in it: that's AdBlue. The trouble begins once it's sucked through your pump — it will not burn, and it will not combine with diesel. Caught before your engine has been run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is normally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is in Thorrington. Call 0333 366 0103 before you do anything else.

Those opening minutes: AdBlue in the diesel tank in Thorrington

To do:

  • Keys out — that way nobody can power anything on.
  • Close to moving traffic? So put the hazards on.
  • The empty bottle or the till receipt tells us the fluid and the quantity, and so do not bin it away.
  • Ring just where you are. Say a CO7 8 postcode or the closest street sign, and no one has to hunt for you.

Things not to do:

  • Moving your car just a few yards is no reason to fire up the engine.
  • Don't switch your ignition on. On many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.
  • Pouring in extra diesel doesn't help: AdBlue separates out instead of thinning.
  • Even a short way up Chapel Lane is too far to drive the car.
  • Don't try to drain the car yourself at the kerbside.

Rolling your car off the pumps is a job for attendants to help with, wherever Thorrington forecourt you are on, the Texaco or any other. At home, your car stays just where it was left.

AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

Not the motor but the exhaust is where AdBlue belongs. Its own tank holds it, and from there it's fed into your exhaust, where it treats the gas. Nothing in it is supposed to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is designed to handle it.

It does not combine. After it's tipped into a tank of diesel, AdBlue behaves not at all like fuel. Denser than diesel, it drops and collects below it — the very place the pickup sucks from. Easiest of all: one that got AdBlue in Frating overnight and hasn't turned since. The liquid sits at the base of that tank, untouched — but it will be first through once the engine starts, ahead of any diesel at all.

From there it does two kinds of damage. As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it's corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, and so it keeps running on the parts it gets to for as long as it stays there. Lines holding AdBlue spell harm overnight for a car sitting in Thorrington. Just in your tank, it stays stable. The water in it does damage of its own: your high-pressure pump and your injectors depend on diesel to lubricate them, and water offers them nothing.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in Thorrington

Why is AdBlue in a diesel frequently the bigger fault?

Put petrol in a diesel at the Corner Service Station and you have a fault of thin fuel. No damage is done while it stays unused, blended into the diesel — only once the engine works on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is an issue of the wrong substance altogether. It cannot just be run through, since it does not burn. Whether the car is in Frating Green or the heart of Thorrington, firing it up "to see" costs more with AdBlue than almost any other mistake, and the flush matters for more. The reasons: it will not remain mixed, and so diluting it fails; and deposits and corrosion survive the next fill.

As with petrol, there's good news. Anywhere around Essex the vehicle has stopped, an unrun motor means the AdBlue still in the reservoir: the simplest bit of any fuel system to clear.

How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank in Thorrington?

It's not deliberate. Many vehicles have the AdBlue inlet beside the diesel one, occasionally behind a single flap, and muddling them up is simple after dark. It mostly takes place outside the house, from a bottle bought en route home, rather than at the filling station.

Usually, it happens in one of a couple of familiar ways. Halfway through the morning drop-off, the dashboard flags it up, and outside Great Bentley Primary School the refill is rushed. Near Honeysuckle Way, someone pours a bottle in at home after work. Or the car is topped up in the car park outside The Red Lion, in poor light, by a person who has never opened that flap before.

Rented cars, new cars, fleet vehicles, or the spare car in a family with both fuels: the least known cars see it the most. Keep it switched off: that's the first step to an identical slip, anywhere in Thorrington or the rest of Essex you are.

AdBlue in your diesel tank around Thorrington, and your engine started?

In that case, the AdBlue is no longer in the tank. It has been drawn through the filter and the fuel lines, and if your engine ran for any time, it has reached the high-pressure fuel pump and the fuel injectors.

Watch for rough running, exhaust smoke, lost power, warnings on the dash, or a stall — returning from Thorringtonhall Wood, perhaps, or midway across Thorrington. No restarting to test: pull over when safe, then turn it off. More of that is pulled through with each start.

Thorrington sits under 50 miles from the M11; if you were on it, leave at the first junction and stop somewhere safe rather than carrying on.

How far it went matters. A few hundred yards across Thorrington to the car park by Thorrington Village Hall is a very different job from a run towards Colchester, under 10 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into your system with every mile. Roughly how far had it come? Tell us.

Once your engine has been run, the flush includes more, and all of it is done where your car has stopped. When it is caught early, lasting damage is very rare.

Thorrington: how AdBlue is emptied from a diesel

The car stays where it is, whether that is a street beside St Mary Magdalen, Thorrington, a driveway, a layby or a filling station around Thorrington, and the van travels to it. What was put in, about how much, plus whether the engine has turned over: our engineers ask before all else, since those shape the work.

Right there, the tank is then emptied, and both the polluted diesel and the urea leave as one. A careful flush counts much more with AdBlue than with petrol, since what remains won't wash away on its own. After that, your filter: cleaned, or replaced if it has to be. After that clean diesel, then a test of the car. The majority of these jobs are a half-hour job once our technicians get there, if the engine hasn't run. Our equipment is explosion-proof, and so a live forecourt is no issue, and it's quiet enough for a residential street late at night.

Bleeding your system with fresh diesel comes last. Starting the engine comes next, and then you drive off from where the car is parked, at Great Bentley or on a drive around Thorrington. We check it runs smoothly on clean diesel before we go. The whole job is done where the car is, so it never has to go to a workshop. Your insurer is likely to want an engineer's report and your VAT invoice — both yours once this job is done.

Thorrington: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

There is no honest single quote, since the jobs aren't the same. The cost moves first with how long, if at all, the engine has been running, and next with the amount of AdBlue that was put in. After that it turns on where the car is and whether a technician can get to it safely, which is simpler on an open drive than in a tight gap behind Tendring Gospel Hall.

With that in mind, every enquiry from Thorrington begins with the identical trio — which fluid got in, how much, if the engine ran — ahead of a figure. Those answers shrink the range right down to one figure.

You hear that price by phone, before anybody heads out, and you pay on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront. As our engineer is on the way, check your insurance: plenty cover misfuelling.
