AdBlue in a diesel motor, and its separate tank

No single liquid but two: that is how plenty of modern diesels near Thurnscoe and Billingley carry, with diesel for your motor. AdBlue goes to the exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to fresh it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Each tank has its own filler. On a lot of motors the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in the boot or under the bonnet. Filling the diesel side at the petrol pump goes on all the time. Rarely topped up, AdBlue usually goes in out of a bottle, tipped by someone who must stop and think what filler to use. The slip lives in that gap.

Thurnscoe: how AdBlue in your diesel tank happens

It's seldom carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the car tells you, and if it runs out completely, the car drops into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a drive off High Street before work, or in the car park outside The Ship on the way home.

Then the vehicle is new. A hire car, a new vehicle or a company car puts the fillers where your last one didn't, and your hand gets to for the cap it would have used on the old one.

Third, the spout fits: a diesel filler or AdBlue filler, it slides in just as easily, and once the pour starts, no part halts it. It's seconds, be it out in Thurnscoe East or bang in the heart of Thurnscoe.

The AdBlue filler and the diesel filler: telling them apart

A few seconds is all these take — so run through them before you tip anything, on a drive in Great Houghton or a forecourt in Thurnscoe.

  • The cap. The AdBlue cap is regularly blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap usually isn't. Read it instead of going by where it sits.
  • Plenty of vehicles fit AdBlue the smaller neck of the two.
  • Look inside your fuel flap: plenty of motors have a label there showing which fuel goes where.
  • In your boot or under the bonnet: that is where the filler sits if it's not by the diesel cap, and the handbook tells you which.
  • Ask the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — when you collect a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park at the nearest station.

How to top up without AdBlue in the diesel tank

When the light comes on, wherever across South Yorkshire, follow this routine.

  • Stop somewhere level, engine off, with time to spare — never rushing on the side of Kingsway.
  • Locate the AdBlue filler, read the cap, and speak the name "AdBlue" aloud while you unscrew it. It seems daft. It works.
  • The diesel cap remains on. When both share a flap, confirm it's shut before the bottle comes up.
  • Stop when that tank fills or the bottle is empty; until then, pour gently using the own spout.
  • Close the cap and check again. Make sure your diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the vehicle.

Stop there if you find, at stage two or three, that you've already poured into your diesel side. Do not go on to step five.

Already put AdBlue in the diesel tank around Thurnscoe?

What follows is a short order of things, beginning with no starting your engine. On many diesels the ignition alone runs the fuel pump, so do not switch the vehicle on. AdBlue does not mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where your fuel is drawn from — so do not top up with diesel to dilute it.

If you're at a forecourt, whether it is the BP or the Texaco, ask the attendants to help roll the car away from the petrol pump. If you are on your own driveway around Thurnscoe, leave it where it is.

When the motor has run by now, stop somewhere safe then switch it off. Come off the A1(M) — under 5 miles out of Thurnscoe — at the first junction. Mileage counts — a quick hop across Thurnscoe makes a smaller job than heading under 10 miles to Doncaster — so say about how far it went.

What happens when we turn up in Thurnscoe

By Gooseacre Primary Academy, close to Thurnscoe War Memorial or on your own driveway: wherever your car has stopped, our technicians come to it. Those answers determine the work and our price, and so our technicians ask what went in, about how much, and if it's run. Nobody sets off until you have heard our price by phone.

Next: draining, then a full flush of the entire system. AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it doesn't wash out on its own — which is why that matters more with AdBlue than with petrol. Your filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and your car is tested. We don't go until it has been started and is running correctly.

Using pumps safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough for use outside a house at night, most jobs where your engine has not run need roughly half an hour once we are there. No money in advance; you settle up on the day. At the end, a VAT invoice and the report from the engineer go to you for your insurer. Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it's worth checking yours while we're on the way.
