Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Tickton

If AdBlue has gone into your diesel tank, leave your motor off then leave your ignition off. Urea dissolved in water is what AdBlue is. The harm begins once it's pulled through your pump — it won't ignite, and it won't blend with diesel. If the motor has not run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually drained and thoroughly rinsed where the vehicle stands in Tickton. No step comes before calling 0333 366 0103.

Your next steps right now, Tickton: AdBlue in the diesel tank

Do these:

  • Take your keys out, so no one switches the ignition on.
  • If you're anywhere near moving traffic, put the hazards on.
  • Hold on to the receipt or the empty bottle, so you can tell us what was put in and about how much.
  • Ring us from where you are. A postcode starting HU17 9, or the name of the nearest street, gets our van to you without a search.

Don't do these:

  • No starting your motor — not briefly, not to shift the car.
  • Plenty of diesels power their pump the moment your ignition comes on, so keep the vehicle off.
  • Adding extra diesel doesn't help: AdBlue settles out instead of thinning.
  • Any driving at all is best avoided, including a short stretch up The Beeches.
  • Don't try to drain it yourself at the roadside.

On a forecourt around Tickton, whether it's the BP or another one, ask the staff to help you push the car away from the pump. If you're on your own drive, leave the vehicle precisely where it is.

AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

Made for your exhaust, AdBlue has no business in the engine. From a separate tank it goes directly to your exhaust, treating what the motor lets out. Nothing in it is meant to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is made to handle it.

Inside a diesel tank it behaves very differently from fuel. It doesn't mix in. It is heavier than diesel, and so it sinks and gathers at the bottom of your tank, which is where the pickup sucks fuel from. The first thing your fuel system pulls through, after it runs, is the AdBlue. So a vehicle that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Arram last night, and has not been started since, is still the easy case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of the tank, and nothing has pulled it in.

From there it causes two kinds of damage. It attacks certain metals used in fuel systems, attacking whatever it reaches until it's removed completely. And once the water evaporates, the urea turns into crystals that block filters and settle in tiny passages. Lines holding AdBlue spell damage overnight for a car sitting around Tickton. Just inside the tank, it stays the same. Diesel protects the injection pump and each injector as it passes; water offers no lubrication, which is a separate form of harm.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in Tickton

Why AdBlue in a diesel is regularly more major than petrol

Top up a diesel with petrol by mistake at the JET, and the problem is diluted fuel. Blended into your diesel and left still, it is no threat at that stage; using your motor is the harm.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the fluid itself is simply the wrong one. It does not burn, and so it can't simply be run through. Deposits and corrosion remain after the next fill, and AdBlue splits again out of your diesel, so watering it won't help. Hence the flush matters so much, and turning your key "to see" does more harm with AdBlue than nearly any other mistake — in Molescroft or the heart of Tickton alike.

As with petrol, there is good news. If your motor hasn't run, the AdBlue is still in that tank, and the tank is the quickest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever across East Riding of Yorkshire the vehicle is standing.

Tickton: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

It's not deliberate. Plenty of vehicles have the AdBlue cap alongside the diesel one, occasionally under a single flap, and mixing them up is simple in poor light. A bottle bought while driving home and poured in outside the house, instead of at the filling station, is the typical story.

The ways it takes place are few and familiar. Midway through the drop-off, the dashboard flags it up, and outside Tickton Church of England Voluntary Controlled Primary School the refill is hurried. In the evening, a bottle goes in on a drive near The Orchard. Otherwise, in dim light outside New Inn, your vehicle gets refilled by someone opening that flap the first time.

Rented motors, brand-new motors, company cars, or the second car in a home with one of each: the least known cars get it most. Leave it switched off: that's the first step to the same mistake, wherever around Tickton or the rest of East Riding of Yorkshire you happen to be.

AdBlue in your diesel tank around Tickton, and your engine started?

If so, the AdBlue is no longer in your tank. It has been sucked through the fuel filter and your lines, and if the motor ran for any time, it has reached the high-pressure fuel pump and your injectors.

Perhaps returning from Tickton Childrens Play Area, or midway across Tickton, the motor might run rough, smoke, lose pace, light up the dash or cut out. Pull over when it is safe. Switch off. Keep it off rather than restarting it to check. Each start pulls more of it through.

Leave the M62, under 15 miles from Tickton, by the first junction and stop somewhere safe, not driving on.

A quick hop across Tickton to the car park by Tickton Methodist Church is one thing; heading for Kingston upon Hull, under 10 miles away, is another, because each mile carries the AdBlue further in. So distance matters. Let us know about how far it had come.

We do all of the cleaning where your car has stopped, and once the motor has been run there is more of it. Spotted early, it very rarely leaves permanent damage.

Tickton: how AdBlue is emptied from a diesel

Anywhere it has stopped in Tickton — a forecourt, a layby, a driveway, a road beside Tickton Parish Hall — the van comes to the vehicle. Before anything else we ask what was put in, about how much, and whether the motor has run, because those answers determine the work.

Next, draining that tank on the spot takes out the contaminated diesel and the AdBlue in one go. What remains from AdBlue won't flush out unaided, so the fuel system gets a full flush, which matters far more here than for petrol. Your filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and your car is tested. Not run? In that case count on roughly half an hour once we are there for most jobs. The pumps are explosion-proof, safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

Finally, your system is primed with new diesel. Whether it's a parking bay outside Beverley or a drive in Tickton, that is where our engineers fire it up and you drive off. Before leaving, our technicians confirm it's running properly with clean diesel in. Because the job is done in full where your car is, a garage never comes into it. You get a VAT invoice and an engineer report after that, which is what insurers want.

Tickton: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

Every job differs, so no fixed quote would be fair. What shifts the price is, first of all, whether the motor has been running and for how long; then how much AdBlue got in; and after that where the vehicle is and whether a van can reach it safely, which is simpler on an open driveway than in a tight space behind St. Paul's Church.

For that in mind, each enquiry from Tickton opens by asking the identical trio — what got in, what quantity, whether the engine ran — ahead of a quote. The replies turn a range into a straight quote.

Quoted by phone before the van sets out, the job is paid for on the day — card or phone, no deposit. Check your insurance while we are on the way: many include misfuelling cover.
