Tilbury: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

If AdBlue has gone into the diesel tank, leave the motor off and keep the ignition off. AdBlue is urea dissolved in water. It doesn't burn, it does not mix with diesel, and the harm it does starts when the system pulls it in. Caught before the engine has been run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is generally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is around Tilbury. Call 0333 366 0103 before you do anything else.

AdBlue in the diesel tank in Tilbury: the first few minutes

Things to do:

  • So no one can switch your ignition on, take your keys away.
  • Put the hazard lights on if you are anywhere close to moving traffic.
  • So you can give us which liquid it was and roughly what quantity, save the receipt or the empty bottle.
  • Our van locates you fastest with a postcode starting RM18 8, or just the name of a street nearby, and so call from the spot.

Things not to do:

  • Shifting your car even a short way is no reason to fire up the motor.
  • Many diesels power their fuel pump the moment the ignition comes on, and so leave the vehicle off.
  • AdBlue doesn't dilute in diesel — it separates out — so adding more fuel won't thin it.
  • Do not drive it anywhere, not even a short stretch up Calcutta Road.
  • By the road, don't try draining it on your own.

Moving your vehicle off the island is a job for staff to help with, wherever Tilbury forecourt you're on, the Asda or any other. At your own driveway, do not move it at all.

AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

AdBlue is made for your exhaust, not the engine. It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into your exhaust gas to clean it. Nothing in it is supposed to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is designed to handle it.

It does not blend. After it's tipped into a tank of diesel, AdBlue behaves not at all like diesel. The intake takes fuel from the lowest part of your tank, and that's precisely where AdBlue settles: being heavier than diesel, it sinks. The first thing the system pulls through, after it runs, is the AdBlue. So a car that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Chadwell St Mary last night, and has not been started since, is still the easy case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of the tank, and nothing has pulled it in.

Once it's drawn in, the harm takes two forms. It attacks certain metals used in fuel systems, attacking whatever it touches till it is cleared completely. And when the water goes, the urea turns into crystals that clog filters and settle in tiny channels. If the AdBlue has reached the pipework, waiting overnight around Tilbury makes things worse. Inside your tank alone, waiting costs nothing. Diesel lubricates the injection pump and each injector as it flows; water gives none of that, which is a separate form of damage.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in Tilbury

Why is AdBlue in a diesel commonly the bigger problem?

Put petrol in a diesel at the Esso and you have a fault of thin fuel. No harm is done as long as it sits put, blended into the diesel — only once the motor runs on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is a problem of the wrong substance altogether. It does not burn, and so it cannot just be run through. Nor can it be watered down, since it separates back out — and the next tankful won't rinse away crystals or corrosion. So the flush matters more here, and turning your key "to see", in the centre of Tilbury or out in Rosherville, costs more than nearly any other mistake.

The same good news applies as with petrol. Not started? Then the AdBlue sits only in your tank, the simplest bit of the whole system to clear, wherever your vehicle has stopped in Essex.

How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank around Tilbury

Plenty of cars place the AdBlue filler beside the diesel cap, occasionally under a single flap, and after dark the two may look the same. Nobody intends it. Mostly it occurs with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the drive, not at the forecourt.

Mostly, it occurs in one of a few familiar ways. The top-up is rushed outside St Mary's Catholic Primary School, because your dash lit up with a warning as the children were taken off. In the evening, a bottle is tipped in on a drive close to Montreal Road. Or a driver new to that flap refills the car after dark, stopped in the car park outside The World's End.

The least familiar vehicles see it the most — rentals, new ones, company ones, and the other car of a family with both fuels. An identical mistake, same first response — leave it switched off — wherever you are in Tilbury or the rest of Essex.

Already started the motor with AdBlue in your diesel tank around Tilbury?

Then the AdBlue has left your tank. The fuel filter and pipework have had it pulled along, and some running time takes it on to the injection pump and each injector.

Maybe coming back from Anchor Fields Park, or part way across Tilbury, your engine may run rough, smoke, drop pace, light up the dash or cut out. When you safely can, stop and turn it off — without turning it on again to see. With each start, more of that is pulled through.

Tilbury sits under 5 miles from the M25; if you were on it, leave by the next junction and stop somewhere safe instead of driving on.

Distance matters: every mile carries the AdBlue further into your system, and so heading towards Southend-on-Sea, under 25 miles away, makes a far bigger job than crossing Tilbury to the car park by Banqueting Hall. Let us know about how far it had come.

There's more to flush once the engine has been run, and our engineers do all of it where the car has stopped. If it's spotted soon, lasting damage is very uncommon.

Tilbury: how AdBlue is emptied from a diesel

The vehicle stays where it is, whether that's a street beside War Memorial & Clock, a drive, a layby or a forecourt around Tilbury, and the van travels to it. Before anything else we ask what got in, roughly how much, and if the engine has been run, because those answers decide the work.

Next, draining that tank on the spot removes the polluted diesel along with the AdBlue together. What remains from AdBlue will not flush out unaided, and so the fuel system gets a full flush, which counts far more here than with petrol. Fresh diesel goes in once the fuel filter is flushed — or replaced, if it needs to be — and then the vehicle is tested. If your engine has not run, most jobs take about half an hour once our technicians are there. The pumping gear is explosion-proof, so a busy forecourt is no issue, and it's quiet enough for a residential street late at night.

Bleeding the system with fresh diesel comes at the end. Firing it up comes next, and then you head off from where your car is parked, at Tilbury Town or on a drive around Tilbury. Our technicians confirm it runs properly on new diesel before we go. The whole job is done where the vehicle is, so it never needs to go to a workshop. Insurers want a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and you get both afterwards.

AdBlue drains around Tilbury and across Essex

Tilbury is a coastal town, and a mobile drain suits it: whether the car is on a home drive, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt, our engineers drain it where it stands, and so it never needs to be shifted to us.

What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right in Tilbury

Since the callouts vary, a single figure would not be honest. Three things shift the price: whether the motor has run and for how long, how much AdBlue got in, and where your car is. That last one turns on whether a van can reach it safely, and an open drive is easier than a tight gap behind Tilbury Library.

That is why each call from Tilbury starts with the same three questions, asked before giving a figure, not after: what got in, how much, and whether it's run. Those replies turn a range into a straight price.

Before a van sets off, you hear the quote by phone. And you pay on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing upfront. Look at your insurance while we're on the way: many carry misfuelling cover.
