Tilley: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

AdBlue in the diesel tank? Then leave the motor off — and your ignition too. Urea dissolved in water is what AdBlue is. Unlike fuel, it neither burns nor mixes, and nothing happens until your motor pulls it through. In Tilley, AdBlue in a diesel tank found before your engine runs normally comes down to a drain and a thorough flush, right where the vehicle is. Nothing comes before calling 0333 366 0103.

Those opening minutes: AdBlue in the diesel tank around Tilley

Do:

  • So nobody can switch the ignition on, pull your keys away.
  • Hazards on, if moving traffic is anywhere close.
  • Keep your receipt or the empty bottle, so you can tell us what was put in and about how much.
  • Call just where you are. Say a SY4 5 postcode or the nearest street name, and nobody has to hunt for you.

Never do these:

  • Not even briefly, and not to shift the car: your engine stays off.
  • Don't switch the ignition on. On many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.
  • AdBlue does not mix in diesel — it separates out — so adding extra diesel won't thin it.
  • Do not drive it anywhere, not even a short way along Tilley Road.
  • Draining your tank yourself beside the road is not worth trying.

At a forecourt in Tilley, whether it is the Valero or another one, ask the attendants to help you roll the car clear of the pump. On that drive, the vehicle stays exactly as it is.

AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

Meant for the exhaust, AdBlue has no business in the motor. From a dedicated tank it goes straight to your exhaust, treating what the motor lets out. Neither side fits the other: urea doesn't belong in an injection pump, and an injection pump can't take urea.

Fuel blends; AdBlue, after tipped in, will not. The behaviour is nothing like diesel's. Denser than diesel, it sinks and pools underneath it — the same spot the intake sucks from. Easiest of all: a vehicle that got AdBlue in Palms Hill overnight and has not been started since. The AdBlue sits at the foot of the tank, undrawn — though it would be the first thing through once the engine starts, ahead of any diesel at all.

Two kinds of harm come from there. As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it is corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, and so it keeps running on the parts it hits for as long as it remains there. Overnight, a vehicle parked around Tilley with AdBlue in its lines grows worse; where it's just inside your tank, nothing changes. Diesel protects the high-pressure pump and each injector as it passes; water gives none of that, which is a separate form of damage.

AdBlue in a diesel: why it's frequently worse than petrol

Fill a diesel with petrol in error over at the another forecourt nearby, and the issue is diluted fuel. No damage comes as long as it stays unused, mixed into the diesel — only once your engine runs on it.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the liquid itself is simply the wrong one. It does not burn, and so it can't just be run through. Whether your car sits in Barkers Green or the centre of Tilley, turning it over "to see" costs more in this case than almost any other error, and the flush counts more. Why: it will not remain mixed, and so watering it down fails; and crystals and corrosion outlast the next tankful.

The same good news holds as with petrol. Wherever around Shropshire the vehicle has stopped, an unstarted motor leaves the AdBlue still in the reservoir: the simplest bit of any fuel system to clear.

How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank around Tilley?

No one means to do it. The AdBlue filler on plenty of motors sits right next to your diesel filler, sometimes under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light. Mostly it happens with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the drive, not at the forecourt.

Mostly, it takes place in one of a couple of familiar ways. The top-up gets rushed outside St Peter's CofE Primary School, after your dash lit up with a warning as the kids were dropped in. In the evening, a bottle goes in on a drive close to Tilley Bridge. Or your car is topped up in the car park at Tilley Raven, in poor light, by somebody who has never opened that flap before.

It crops up most in a hire car, a new motor, a company vehicle, or the spare motor in a family with both fuel types — the vehicles drivers use least. Same slip, same first step — keep it off — anywhere you are around Tilley or the rest of Shropshire.

AdBlue in your diesel tank in Tilley, and the engine started?

Then the AdBlue has left that tank. The filter and pipework have had it pulled along, and any running carries it on to the high-pressure pump and every injector.

Watch for lumpy running, exhaust smoke, falling power, warnings on the dash, or a cut-out — coming back from Ruewood Nature Reserve, perhaps, or midway across Tilley. No starting it again to test: pull over once it is safe, then switch it off. More of that is pulled through with each start.

Tilley sits under 15 miles from the M54; if you were on it, leave at the next junction and stop safely rather than carrying on.

Each mile carries the AdBlue further in. That is why a hop across Tilley to park near Wem Castle Motte and a drive of under 25 miles for Wrexham are very different jobs. Let us know about how far it had come.

We do all of the flushing where the vehicle has ended up, and once the motor has been run there is more of it. If it is spotted early, permanent damage is very unusual.

Clearing AdBlue in a diesel in Tilley: what it takes

Our technicians come to your car, wherever it has stopped in Tilley: a side street close to Catholic Church of Our Lady, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt. What went in, about how much, plus if the motor has turned over: our engineers ask before all else, since those shape the work.

The contaminated diesel and the urea leave as one after the tank is drained, right there. Residue from AdBlue will not wash out by itself, so the fuel system gets a careful flush, which counts far more here than for petrol. Clean diesel goes in after the fuel filter is cleaned — or swapped, if it needs to be — and after that the car is tested. Not run? In that case expect about half an hour once we are there for most jobs. The pumps are explosion-proof, fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

The last step is to prime the system on fresh diesel. At that point our engineers fire it up and you drive off, whether from a parking bay by Wem or a drive around Tilley. Before we go, our engineers make sure it is running correctly with fresh diesel in. Because the job is done in full where the vehicle is, a garage never comes into it. Afterwards, you are given the paperwork for your insurer: a VAT invoice and a report from the engineer.

About Tilley, for a moment

Tilley is a small hamlet situated on the riverside in Shropshire, with an elevation of around 80 metres. Tilley lies near the villages of Tilley Green and Ruewood, and is close to the town of Wem. Tilley is characterized by its predominantly detached housing stock, and is located approximately 17 miles from the city of Wrexham. Tilley is a rural community in the West Midlands region, about 144 miles northwest of London.

AdBlue drains around Tilley and across Shropshire

Tilley Green, Ruewood and Wem are among the towns near Tilley that the same teams reach, together with most of Shropshire beyond, throughout the SY postcode area. Phone and check instead of guessing if you're close to a county line, or anywhere awkward to pin down.

Wherever the vehicle stands — a driveway at home, a residential street, a parking area, a filling station — we empty it there, with no need to take it to us; which suits Tilley, a rural hamlet, well.

Tilley: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

Not one flat figure would be fair, since each job is different. The cost shifts first with how long, if at all, the motor has been running, and next with the amount of AdBlue that was put in. After that it turns on where the car is and whether our van can reach it safely, which is easier on an open driveway than in a tight gap behind St Peter and St Paul.

Which fluid was put in, how much, plus whether the engine ran: each Tilley call begins by asking precisely that, before a quote, not after. Once they are answered, a range becomes one firm number.

Our quote is quoted on the call, before anyone sets off; settling up comes on the day, by card or by phone, and nothing upfront. While our engineer is on the way, dig out your policy: many include misfuelling.
