AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Tillington? Don't Start It

With AdBlue in the diesel tank, your ignition stays off and so does your engine. AdBlue is urea mixed in water. Being water-based, it will not ignite and won't blend with diesel; trouble only comes when the pump starts drawing it. In Tillington, AdBlue in a diesel tank found before the motor runs usually means a drain and a thorough flush, right where your car is. Before you do anything else, call 0333 366 0103.

Tillington, AdBlue in the diesel tank: what to do straight away

To do:

  • So no one can switch your ignition on, take the keys out.
  • Close to moving traffic? Then put the hazard lights on.
  • Which product, and roughly what volume? Save the bottle or the till receipt, and we can know.
  • Call just where you are. Quote a ST16 1 postcode or the nearest street name, and nobody has to search for you.

Never:

  • No starting your motor — not for a second, not to reposition your car.
  • Your ignition stays off: on many diesels, turning it on is enough to start the fuel pump.
  • AdBlue does not mix in diesel — it separates out — so adding extra fuel won't thin it.
  • Keep the vehicle where it is instead of driving it anywhere, even a short way down Bramall Close.
  • Draining your tank on your own beside the road is not one to try.

The attendants working at any Tillington filling station — the Shell included — will usually help pushing it clear if you ask. On your own drive, do not move it at all.

What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

Not your motor but your exhaust is where AdBlue is meant to go. Kept in a dedicated tank, it's injected into the exhaust to clean the gases. A fuel pump isn't made to take it, and AdBlue was never intended to travel through one.

Inside a diesel tank it acts really differently from fuel. It doesn't mix in. The pickup sucks fuel from the lowest part of the tank, and that's exactly where AdBlue ends up: being denser than diesel, it sinks. When the pump runs, the AdBlue is first to go through. Before then it waits underneath your diesel, and that is why a vehicle topped up in Doxey yesterday and never switched on remains the straightforward one, as long as no one touches the key.

After it's pulled in, the damage comes in two forms. Crystals and corrosion. As the water dries, it leaves urea that crystallises in filters and narrow channels; and, because it attacks some metals, every part it reaches suffers for as long as it stays in there. A vehicle left sitting in Tillington with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue just in its tank isn't. The water in it causes damage of its own: your high-pressure pump and the injectors depend on diesel to lubricate them, and water offers them nothing.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in Tillington

Why is AdBlue in a diesel commonly the bigger fault?

Put petrol in a diesel at the Esso and you have a fault of thin fuel. It mixes with your diesel, and whilst it is inside that tank it does no harm; the damage comes from running the engine on it.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the liquid as such is plainly the wrong one. Since it doesn't burn, running it through is not an option. Whether the car is in Castletown or the heart of Tillington, turning it over "to see" does more harm with AdBlue than almost any other error, and the flush matters more. Why: it will not remain mixed, so watering it down fails; and crystals and corrosion outlast the next tankful.

As with petrol, there's good news. Clearing a tank is the easiest part on any fuel system, and with no start-up, the AdBlue remains in it — wherever around Staffordshire your car has stopped.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around Tillington: how it ends up there

It's not deliberate. Many vehicles keep the AdBlue inlet beside the diesel inlet, occasionally under one flap, and mixing them up is simple after dark. Most of the time it takes place with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the drive, not at the pump.

It tends to occur in a couple of familiar ways. Hurrying, outside Tillington Manor Primary School, after a warning lamp came on during the school run, someone tops up the car. Near Holmcroft Road, a driver tips a bottle in at home in the evening. Or the car is topped up in the car park outside The Holmcroft, in poor light, by a person who has never opened that flap before.

It comes up the most in a rental, a brand-new car, a company car, or the spare car in a home with both fuel types — the cars drivers know least. Wherever around Staffordshire, Tillington as well, the slip does not change, and neither does the first response: keep it switched off.

Started the motor with AdBlue in the diesel tank in Tillington?

Then that tank is no longer where the AdBlue is. Via the filter, along the lines, and — given any running — into the injection pump and each injector: that is where it has gone.

Expect rough running, smoke, lost power, warnings on the dash, or a cut-out — coming back from Pitt Street, Doorstep Green, Friendship Garden, say, or midway across Tillington. No restarting to check: stop once it is safe, then turn everything off. Every start pulls more of that through.

On the M6, under a mile from Tillington, the first junction is where to leave, and somewhere safe is where to park — not driving on.

Distance counts: each mile pushes the AdBlue deeper into the system, so heading towards Stoke-on-Trent, under 15 miles away, makes a much larger job than crossing Tillington to the car park by Saint Bertelin's Church. Tell us roughly how far it had come.

Our engineers do all of the flushing where the vehicle has ended up, and once the engine has been run there is more of it. If it is spotted quickly, permanent damage is very uncommon.

What draining AdBlue from a diesel involves around Tillington

Anywhere it has come to rest around Tillington — a forecourt, a lay-by, a drive, a street beside 20th Stafford (Saint Bertelin's) Scout Group — the van comes to your vehicle. Before anything else our technicians ask what went in, about how much, and whether your motor has run, since those answers determine the work.

The polluted diesel and the urea leave together after that tank is drained, on the spot. The system is rinsed thoroughly, which matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, since what it leaves behind does not rinse out on its own. Fresh diesel goes in once the fuel filter is flushed — or replaced, when it needs to be — and then your vehicle is tested. Roughly half an hour once we arrive is usual for most jobs where the engine hasn't run. The pumps are explosion-proof, fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

New diesel goes in to bleed the system, and that is the last step. Starting the car comes next, and then you drive off from where the vehicle is parked, outside Stafford or on a driveway around Tillington. We confirm it runs properly on new diesel before we go. The whole job is done where your car is, so it never has to be taken to a workshop. Afterwards, there is paperwork for your insurer: a VAT invoice plus a written report from the engineer.

AdBlue drains across Tillington and Staffordshire

Over the ST postcode area, the vans taking AdBlue jobs around Tillington serve much of Staffordshire as well, Holmcroft, Trinity Fields and Parkside among them. Phone and ask instead of guessing when you're by a border, or somewhere tricky to explain.

No moving is needed. In Tillington, a residential suburb, a mobile service fits: your car is emptied where it stands, whether on a driveway, a residential street, a car park or a filling station.

What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right around Tillington

Because the jobs vary, a single figure would not be honest. Three things shift the cost: whether the engine has run and for how long, how much AdBlue got in, and where the vehicle is. That last one comes down to whether a van can reach it safely, and an open drive is easier than a tight space behind Holmcroft Library.

What was put in, what quantity, plus whether it ran: every Tillington enquiry opens by asking exactly that, ahead of a quote, not afterwards. The answers turn a range into a straight quote.

Quoted on the call before the van sets out, the job is paid for on the day — card or phone, nothing in advance. As our engineer is travelling, check your policy: plenty cover misfuelling.
