Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel vehicle

Diesel goes to the engine — but plenty of modern diesels seen around Tir Syr Walter and Gwaun-Leision carry a second liquid too. AdBlue's own tank holds it, and from there it goes to your exhaust, and there spraying cleans the fumes.

Each tank has its own filler. Under one flap, next to each other: that's the layout on a lot of motors. Elsewhere, AdBlue's filler sits under the bonnet or in the boot instead. At the petrol pump, your diesel side is topped up constantly. Someone who has to stop and work out where it goes normally tops up the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less regularly. It's in the gap that the mistake happens.

Tir Syr Walter: how AdBlue in your diesel tank occurs

Seldom is it carelessness: usually three things line up.

On a driveway off Nant Gwineu Road before work, or in the car park outside the pub in the village heading home: that's where the hurried top-up takes place. Why the rush? As AdBlue gets low your car tells you, and if it's empty, limp mode follows.

Next, your hand goes for the cap it knew on the old car — because a hire car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers somewhere your last one did not.

Lastly, the bottle goes in: diesel filler or AdBlue filler, it slides in as easily, and after the pour starts, no part stops it. Whether it occurs in Twyn or the middle of Tir Syr Walter, it's the same few seconds.

Telling the AdBlue filler from your diesel filler

Before you pour anything, whether on a driveway in Glanaman or a forecourt in Tir Syr Walter, check these. They take a couple of seconds.

  • Check the cap rather than going by where it sits: AdBlue ones are commonly blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel caps normally are not.
  • The size. On plenty of motors the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.
  • The flap. Look inside your fuel flap for a label. Many cars say there which fuel goes where.
  • The handbook shows which it is if the filler isn't next to your diesel cap: your boot, or under the bonnet.
  • The person who drove the car last. On a hire or company car collected from somewhere like the car park outside Ammanford, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

Keeping AdBlue out of your diesel tank when you top up

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever across Carmarthenshire that is.

  • Not in a rush on the side of Heol Neuadd, not on a slope, not with your motor running: park and switch off first.
  • Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds daft and it does the trick.
  • Leave your diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.
  • Using the bottle's own spout, tip slowly — and stop when it's full or the bottle is empty.
  • Close the cap and check again. Make sure the diesel cap was never opened. Only then start your car.

If at step two or three you find you have already poured into the diesel side, stop there. Never carry on to stage five.

AdBlue in the diesel tank already, in Tir Syr Walter?

The short order of things, beginning with not starting your engine. On many diesels the ignition alone runs the fuel pump, so don't switch the vehicle on. Filling up with diesel won't weaken it: rather than mixing, AdBlue drops to the base of the tank, just where the fuel is taken from.

Ask the attendants to help roll your car away from the petrol pump if you are on a forecourt — the Texaco, the Tout's or anywhere else. On your own drive in Tir Syr Walter? Then the car stays put.

Already run? Pull over once it's safe, then switch off. Tir Syr Walter lies under 10 miles from the M4; there, use the next junction. A short hop across Tir Syr Walter is a smaller job than a run towards Swansea, under 15 miles away, so tell us about how far it went.

When our engineers turn up around Tir Syr Walter, what happens?

Wherever the car came to rest, be it by the local primary school, beside War Memorial or on your own drive, the van comes to it. Both the work and our price rest on three replies — what fluid, what quantity, and if it's run — so we ask. On the phone call itself, you hear the price — ahead of dispatch.

Then that tank is cleared and the fuel system rinsed thoroughly. Much more than with petrol, it matters with AdBlue: the crystals form, certain metals corrode, and none of it washes out unaided, however long it is left. A test comes at the end: before that, clean diesel goes in, and the fuel filter is cleaned or replaced if necessary. We do not go until it has been fired up and is running smoothly.

Most jobs are finished in about half an hour after our technicians arrive, provided the motor hasn't run — and the pumps our engineers use are fine on a live forecourt and quiet at night outside a house. The insurer usually wants the engineer's report and your VAT invoice, and you get both at the end. Payment is on the day, with no money upfront. While we travel, take a look at your policy; plenty include cover for misfuelling.
