AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Tittensor? Keep It Switched Off

AdBlue in the diesel tank? Then leave the engine off — and the ignition as well. Water with urea dissolved in it: that is AdBlue. Not like fuel, it neither ignites nor blends, and no harm happens till the engine sucks it round. In Tittensor, AdBlue in a diesel tank caught before the motor runs usually means a drain and a thorough flush, just where the vehicle is. Nothing comes before ringing 0333 366 0103.

Those opening minutes: AdBlue in your diesel tank in Tittensor

Do these:

  • Take the keys out, and so no one switches your ignition on.
  • Close to moving traffic? Then put the hazard lights on.
  • The empty bottle or your receipt tells us the product and the quantity, so do not throw it out.
  • Ring us from where you are. A postcode starting ST12 9, or the name of the closest street, gets the van to you without a search.

Not to do:

  • Don't start your engine, even for a moment to shift your car.
  • Don't switch your ignition on. On plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.
  • AdBlue doesn't mix in diesel — it separates out — so adding extra fuel won't thin it.
  • Any driving at all is best avoided, even a short way up Copeland Avenue.
  • By the road, do not attempt draining it yourself.

The staff on duty at any Tittensor filling station — the BP among them — will usually lend a hand rolling it clear if you ask. If you're on your own drive, leave the vehicle just where it sits.

What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

AdBlue is made for your exhaust, not your engine. It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into your exhaust gas to fresh it. A fuel pump isn't designed to take it, and AdBlue was never intended to go through one.

Inside a diesel tank it acts very differently from fuel. It doesn't mix in. It is heavier than diesel, and so it sinks and gathers at the bottom of that tank, which is where the pickup sucks fuel from. When your system runs, the AdBlue is top of the list to go through. Until then it waits underneath your diesel, which is why a vehicle filled in Barlaston last night and not switched on remains the straightforward one, as long as no one turns your key.

From there it does two kinds of damage. What is left once the water goes is urea, which forms crystals: they settle in narrow channels and clog filters. On top of that, it attacks certain metals in a fuel system, and keeps going till it is flushed out. If the AdBlue is in the lines, waiting overnight around Tittensor makes things worse. In the tank alone, waiting costs nothing. The water in it causes damage of its own: the high-pressure fuel pump and the fuel injectors depend on diesel to lubricate them, and water offers them nothing.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in Tittensor

Why is AdBlue in a diesel often the bigger issue?

A fault of thinned fuel is what you get from filling a diesel with petrol from the Esso. It mixes with the diesel, and while it's inside the tank it causes no harm; the damage comes from running your motor on it.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the fluid as such is simply the wrong one. Since it doesn't burn, running it through isn't an option. Whether the vehicle is in Sandyford or the heart of Tittensor, firing it up "to see" does more harm with AdBlue than nearly any other mistake, and the flush matters more. The reasons: it will not stay blended, and so watering it down is impossible; and crystals and corrosion outlast the following tankful.

The good news is the same as with petrol. Never started? Then the AdBlue sits only in your tank, the simplest section of the whole system to clear, wherever your car has come to rest in Staffordshire.

How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank in Tittensor?

No one means to do it. The AdBlue filler on many motors sits right next to the diesel filler, at times under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light. It mostly occurs outside the house, from a bottle grabbed on the journey home, rather than at the filling station.

The ways it takes place are few and familiar. The top-up is rushed outside Tittensor CofE (C) First School, after your dash flashed with a warning as the kids were dropped in. Close to Sutherland Road, a driver tips a bottle in at home in the evening. Another version: darkness, a pub car park by The Plume of Feathers, and someone using that flap the first time.

The least familiar vehicles see it the most — rentals, brand-new cars, fleet ones, and the other motor of a home with one of each fuel types. Wherever you're in Tittensor or the rest of Staffordshire, it is the same mistake and the same first answer: leave it off.

Started the engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank around Tittensor?

Then the AdBlue has left your tank. The filter and pipework have had it pulled along, and some running time carries it on to the injection pump and each injector.

Lumpy running, smoke from the exhaust, lost power, dashboard lights or stalling: any may appear, maybe part way across Tittensor or returning from The Oaks. Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and do not restart the vehicle to check. More of that is pulled through with each start.

Exit the M6, under 3 miles from Tittensor, by the first junction and stop safely, rather than driving on.

Mileage counts: every mile pushes the AdBlue further into your system, and so driving towards Stoke-on-Trent, under 10 miles away, makes a much larger job than crossing Tittensor to the car park by Tittensor Village Hall. Approximately how far had it come? Tell us.

There is more to clean out once the motor has run, and we do all of it where your car has ended up. Lasting damage is very unusual when it's caught quickly.

What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve around Tittensor?

The car stays put, whether that is a road beside St Luke's, a drive, a layby or a filling station around Tittensor, and our van travels to it. Which fluid was put in, roughly the quantity, and if your motor has turned over: our technicians check before all else, since those shape the work.

On the spot, your tank is then emptied, and both the polluted diesel and the urea leave at once. Residue from AdBlue will not wash out unaided, so the whole system gets a full flush, which counts far more here than for petrol. Fresh diesel goes in after the fuel filter is flushed — or replaced, if it needs to be — and after that the car is tested. The majority of these jobs are a half-hour job once we arrive, if your motor hasn't run. The pumps are explosion-proof, safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

Last, the system is primed with clean diesel. You set off as soon as we have fired it up, and it makes no difference whether the car is on a drive in Tittensor or in a space by Barlaston. Our engineers check it runs properly on clean diesel before we go. Our engineers do it all wherever the car has stopped, and it never needs to go to a workshop. You receive a VAT invoice and an engineer report after that, which is what insurers ask for.

Anywhere the vehicle sits — a driveway at home, a side street, a car park, a filling station — our technicians empty it on the spot, with no need to bring it to us; that suits Tittensor, a village, well.

What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out in Tittensor?

There is no fair single quote, because the jobs are not the same. Three things shift the price: whether the motor has run and for how long, how much AdBlue went in, and where your car is. That last one rests on whether a van can reach it safely, and an open driveway is simpler than a tight gap behind Duke of Sutherland Monument.

That's why each call from Tittensor starts with the same three queries, asked before giving a figure, not after: what got in, how much, and whether it has run. When those are known, a range turns into one firm figure.

You get that price on the phone, before anybody sets off, and you pay on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront. While our engineer is on the way, check your policy: plenty include misfuelling.
