AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Ton-Teg: How It Occurs and How to Stop It

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave your motor and the ignition off and call 0333 366 0103. A drain plus a thorough flush, carried out just where the vehicle stands around Ton-Teg, is usually what it needs when found before the engine runs. Reading before the event? Then what follows covers why it happens and how to prevent it ever happening.

AdBlue in a diesel car, and its separate tank

Many modern diesels in Efail Isaf, like those in Ton-Teg, carry on two fluids; your motor gets just the diesel. AdBlue's own tank holds it, and from there it is sent to the exhaust, and there a spray cleans the gas.

Every tank comes with one filler of its own. On a lot of motors the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in the boot or under the bonnet. At the petrol pump, your diesel side is topped up all the time. The AdBlue side is topped up far less frequently, usually from a bottle, and usually by a person who has to stop and think where it goes. That gap is where the error lives.

How does AdBlue in the diesel tank take place in Ton-Teg?

Carelessness rarely causes it. What does is three things lining up at once.

On a drive off Brookdale Court before work, or in the car park at Fagins on the way home: that's where the hurried top-up takes place. Why the rush? As AdBlue runs low your car tells you, and if it is empty, limp mode kicks in.

Then, your hand goes for the cap it would have used on the old vehicle — because a rental car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not.

A spout-topped bottle meets no obstacle at a diesel filler no more than at an AdBlue one. So the pour, once started, keeps on. Church Village or the heart of Ton-Teg: it takes the same few seconds either way.

The AdBlue filler and your diesel filler: telling them apart

Whether a Ton-Teg forecourt or a driveway out in Llantwit Fardre, spend a couple of seconds over these before any is poured in.

  • Position can mislead; the cap does not. AdBlue caps tend to be blue or bear the name "AdBlue" — diesel caps normally don't.
  • The size. On many motors the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.
  • Lift the filler flap and check for a label — many motors show which belongs in which filler right there.
  • In the boot or under the bonnet: that is where your filler is if it is not by the diesel cap, and the handbook tells you which.
  • The person who drove the car last. On a hire or company car picked up from somewhere like the car park at Trefforest Estate, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

Topping up AdBlue without it reaching the diesel tank

For the day the warning appears — wherever it is around Rhondda Cynon Taf — a routine to follow.

  • Not in a rush on the side of Heol Celyn, not on a slope, not with the motor running: park then switch off properly.
  • Locate the AdBlue filler, read the cap, and say the word "AdBlue" out loud while you unscrew it. It seems silly. It does the trick.
  • Both behind one flap? Then confirm the lid on your diesel side is still closed before raising the bottle.
  • Slowly does it, through the bottle's own spout, till it is full or the bottle runs out.
  • Close the cap and check a second time. Make sure the diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the car.

Stop there if you find, at stage two or three, that you've already poured into the diesel side. Leave out stage five entirely.

Ton-Teg: already put AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Do not start the motor: that's how the short order of things starts. On plenty of diesels your ignition alone runs the fuel pump, so do not switch it on. Don't top up with diesel to thin it: AdBlue does not mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where your fuel is sucked from.

On a forecourt — Esso, Tesco or another — the staff will normally help roll the vehicle clear, when you ask. Your own driveway in Ton-Teg is the place it stays.

Stop as soon as it is safe then switch off, if the motor has already run. The next junction means where to leave when you're on the M4, under 5 miles from Ton-Teg. Mileage matters — a quick hop across Ton-Teg makes a smaller job than heading under 10 miles towards Cardiff — so say roughly how far it went.

What takes place when we arrive in Ton-Teg

We come to the vehicle wherever it has stopped, whether that's outside the local primary school, near Canolfan Hamdden Llanilltud Faerdref or on your own driveway. We ask what got in, roughly how much, and whether it has run, since those answers decide this work and our price. You get that price on the phone, before anyone sets off.

Emptying the tank comes next, followed by a full flush of your system. Not like petrol, AdBlue forms crystals and eats at certain fuel-system metals, and neither clears away unaided. That is why it counts more. The filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested. Your engine is fired up next and checked to be sure it runs smoothly, all before our engineers leave.

Unstarted vehicles usually mean a half-hour visit from arrival. The kit is fine on a live filling station, and hushed enough for a driveway late at night. Your insurer will ask for an engineer's report and your VAT invoice, and you get both once this job is done. Payment comes on the day, with no deposit. Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it's worth checking yours while we're on the way.
