AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Top of Moor? Keep It Switched Off

With AdBlue in your diesel tank, your ignition stays off and so does your engine. Water with urea dissolved in it: that's AdBlue. It doesn't burn, it does not mix with diesel, and the harm it does starts when the system draws it in. If your motor hasn't run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually drained and thoroughly flushed where your car stands in Top of Moor. Before you do anything else, call 0333 366 0103.

Those opening minutes: AdBlue in the diesel tank in Top of Moor

To do:

  • Pull your keys out, and so no one switches your ignition on.
  • Put your hazards on if you're anywhere close to moving traffic.
  • The empty bottle or the receipt tells us the fluid and the quantity, so do not throw it away.
  • Give us a postcode starting OL4 2, or whichever street is nearest, and the van reaches you directly — so ring from wherever you stand.

Don't do these:

  • Shifting the vehicle even a short way is no reason to fire up your engine.
  • Turning your key to ignition alone sets your pump running on many diesels. Avoid it.
  • Do not top up with diesel to thin it. AdBlue does not mix in diesel; it separates out.
  • Any driving at all is to be avoided, even a short stretch along Walnut Avenue.
  • By the road, don't try draining it yourself.

At a forecourt around Top of Moor, whether it is the Shell or another one, ask the staff to help you push the car away from the pump. Parked on your own driveway? Then it remains just where it is.

What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

The engine is not what AdBlue is made for; the exhaust is. It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into your exhaust gas to fresh it. Not one side suits the other: urea doesn't belong in a pump, and a pump cannot deal with urea.

Fuel blends; AdBlue, once poured in, will not. The behaviour is not at all like fuel's. The intake takes fuel from the lowest part of the tank, and that is exactly where AdBlue ends up: being denser than diesel, it sinks. A car topped up on a drive in Waterhead yesterday evening and left unstarted counts as the straightforward one. Nothing has pulled the AdBlue up so far — though once the engine runs, that is what is pulled first, directly from the bottom of that tank.

It causes two kinds of damage from there. As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it is corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, and so it keeps working on the components it hits for as long as it stays there. Where the AdBlue has reached the lines, leaving it overnight around Top of Moor leaves it worse. Inside your tank only, waiting does nothing. And there's the water: it brings no protection to the parts that need it the most — the high-pressure pump and every injector.

Why AdBlue in a diesel is often more serious than petrol

Petrol pumped into a diesel on Tesco's forecourt makes the fuel watery — that's the whole fault. Damage just comes from driving on it. Blended into the diesel and left in the tank, it causes nothing.

AdBlue in a diesel is a different problem: not thin fuel, but no fuel at all. Since it does not burn, running it through is not an option. Deposits and corrosion remain through the following fill, and AdBlue splits back out of the diesel, and so thinning it can't work. Hence the flush counts more, and trying your engine "to see" costs more with AdBlue than nearly any other mistake — in Greenacres Moor or the centre of Top of Moor equally.

The good news is the same as with petrol. If your motor has not run, the AdBlue is still in that tank, and the tank is the simplest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever in Greater Manchester the vehicle is sitting.

How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank in Top of Moor?

Nobody means to do it. The AdBlue filler on plenty of vehicles sits right next to your diesel filler, at times under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light. It mostly happens outside the house, from a container bought en route home, not at the forecourt.

A couple of familiar ways cover most cases. Rushing, outside Littlemoor Primary School, after a warning lamp came on during the school run, a parent refills the car. A driver tips the container in at home, right off Oberlin Street, as the day ends. Another version: dim light, the car park outside Farmers Boy, and a driver opening that flap for the first time.

It happens most in the motors people know least: a hire car, a new vehicle, a company car, or the second vehicle of a household with one diesel and one petrol. Same slip, same first step — keep it switched off — wherever you are in Top of Moor or the remainder of Greater Manchester.

Top of Moor: started the engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank?

If so, the AdBlue is no longer inside that tank. The filter and lines have had it pulled along, and some running carries it on to the injection pump and every injector.

Expect rough running, exhaust smoke, falling power, lights on the dash, or a stall — returning from Waterhead Park, perhaps, or part way across Top of Moor. Once you safely can, pull over then switch it off — without turning it on again to see. Each start pulls more of it through.

Exit the A627(M), under 3 miles from Top of Moor, at the next junction and park somewhere safe, rather than driving on.

Each mile carries the AdBlue further into the system. That is why crossing Top of Moor to park beside Greenacres Congregational Church and a drive of under 10 miles towards Manchester are such distinct jobs. Approximately how far had it come? Tell us.

Wherever your car came to a halt is where all of it gets done, even with more to flush once the motor has been started. Caught soon, it very seldom leaves permanent damage.

Top of Moor: how AdBlue is emptied from a diesel

The vehicle stays put, whether that is a street beside Waterhead War Memorial, a driveway, a layby or a filling station in Top of Moor, and the van travels to it. The work depends on three answers, which we get first — what went in, the amount, and whether the motor has run.

The contaminated diesel and the urea leave as one when your tank is drained, right there. Your system is purged thoroughly, which matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, because what it leaves behind does not rinse out on its own. A test of the car follows last, once fresh diesel is added and your filter gets flushed or, if necessary, replaced. Roughly half an hour once we arrive is typical for most jobs where your engine has not run. The pumps are explosion-proof, safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

Priming the system with fresh diesel comes at the end. Whether it is a parking space at Mossley (Manchester) or a drive around Top of Moor, that is where our technicians start the engine and you head off. Before we go, we make sure it's running properly with clean diesel in. The entire job is done where the vehicle is, so it never needs to be taken to a garage. Your insurer is likely to want an engineer's report and the VAT invoice — both yours afterwards.

AdBlue in a diesel tank in Top of Moor: the cost of fixing it

Because each jobs vary, a flat figure wouldn't be fair. Three things change the cost: whether the engine has been running and for how long, how much AdBlue went in, and where your car is. That last one comes down to whether a technician can get to it safely, and an open drive is simpler than a tight space behind Neon Hub.

That is why every call from Top of Moor starts with the same three queries, asked before giving a figure, not after: what got in, how much, and if it's run. Those replies turn a range into a straight quote.

Priced on the call before the engineer heads out, the job is paid for on the day — card or phone, nothing in advance. Look at your insurance whilst we're on the way: many carry misfuelling cover.
