Toryglen: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

With AdBlue in your diesel tank, the ignition remains off and so does the engine. In plain terms, AdBlue is simply urea in water. Not like fuel, it neither ignites nor mixes, and no harm starts till the motor sucks it through. A drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is in Toryglen, is usually all AdBlue in a diesel tank needs — if it's caught before the motor has been run. Phone 0333 366 0103 before you do anything else.

AdBlue in your diesel tank around Toryglen: the first few minutes

Do these:

  • Pocket the keys, and that prevents anyone switching the power on.
  • Close to moving traffic? So put the hazard lights on.
  • So you can give us which liquid it was and about what quantity, save the receipt or the empty bottle.
  • Tell us a postcode starting G42 0, or whatever street is nearest, and the van reaches you directly — so ring wherever you stand.

Do not do these:

  • Don't start your engine, even for a moment to shift the vehicle.
  • Turning the key to ignition by itself starts your pump running on plenty of diesels. Skip it.
  • Do not top up with diesel to dilute it. AdBlue doesn't mix in diesel; it separates out.
  • Don't drive the vehicle anywhere, not even a short distance along Kerrycroy Street.
  • Emptying that tank on your own beside the road is not one to try.

Get the people behind the counter to help you move the vehicle away from the pumps if you're on a forecourt in Toryglen, whether it is the Asda or somewhere else. If you're on your own drive, leave the car just where it sits.

AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

The motor is not what AdBlue is made for; your exhaust is. Its own reservoir holds it, and from there it is sprayed into your exhaust, where it cleans the gas. No part inside a fuel pump is designed for this fluid — and no part of that was intended to go that way.

It does not combine. After it is tipped into the tank, AdBlue acts nothing like diesel. Heavier than diesel, it drops and pools underneath it — the same place the pickup sucks from. When your pump runs, the AdBlue is top of the list to be pulled through. Until then it waits beneath your diesel, and that is why a vehicle filled in Mount Florida yesterday and not switched on stays the straightforward one, as long as nobody touches your key.

After it is drawn in, the damage takes two forms. What remains when the water evaporates is urea, which turns into crystals: they lodge in tiny passages and block filters. On top of that, it eats at some metals in the fuel system, and carries on till it's cleared out. Overnight, a vehicle sitting in Toryglen with AdBlue through its pipework gets worse; where it is only in the tank, it doesn't. Water lubricates nothing. The injection pump and each injector depend on diesel running past them, and so the water content harms them in its own right.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in Toryglen

Why is AdBlue in a diesel regularly the bigger issue?

A problem of thinned fuel is what you end up with after filling a diesel with petrol at the BP. Blended through the diesel and sitting still, it is no threat at that stage; running your motor is the harm.

AdBlue in a diesel is a problem of the wrong substance altogether. It cannot simply be run through, since it doesn't burn. Whether the car sits in Bankhead or the centre of Toryglen, firing it up "to see" does more harm with AdBlue than nearly any other slip, and the flush matters more. Why: it will not stay blended, so diluting it fails; and crystals and corrosion outlast the next fill.

With AdBlue, the good news is no different from petrol. If the engine hasn't run, the AdBlue is still inside the tank, and that tank is the easiest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever across Glasgow City your car is standing.

Toryglen: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

It is not on purpose. Plenty of cars keep the AdBlue inlet alongside the diesel one, now and then behind a single flap, and mixing them up is simple after dark. Mostly it's not the filling station: a driver buys a container driving home and tips it in at home.

It tends to occur in a couple of familiar ways. Hurrying, outside the local primary school, after a warning lamp came on during the school run, someone refills the vehicle. Someone tips the container in at home, just off Prospecthill Road, as the day ends. Else, in dim light outside Montford House, the car is topped up by someone using that flap the first time.

The least known vehicles see it the most — hire cars, new cars, fleet cars, and the spare motor in a home with one of each fuel types. Leave it switched off: that's the first response to the same mistake, anywhere around Toryglen or the rest of Glasgow City you are.

Toryglen: started the motor with AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Then the AdBlue has left your tank. It has been sucked through your filter and your lines, and if the motor ran for any time, it has reached the high-pressure pump and your injectors.

Lumpy running, smoke, dropping power, dashboard lights or stalling: any might appear, perhaps part way across Toryglen or coming back from Urban Roots Community Garden. Pull over when it is safe. Turn off. Keep it off rather than restarting it to check. With each start, more of it is pulled through.

On the M74, under a mile from Toryglen, the next junction is where to exit, and anywhere sensible is where to park — not carrying on.

Hopping across Toryglen to the car park by Toryglen National Football Centre is one matter; heading towards Glasgow, under 3 miles away, is another, because every mile carries the AdBlue deeper in. So mileage matters. Tell us roughly how far it had come.

Once your engine has run, the flush takes in more, and all of it is done where the car has ended up. Long-term damage is very unusual when it is caught quickly.

What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve in Toryglen?

The car remains where it is, whether that's a street near St. Brigid's Catholic Church, a drive, a lay-by or a filling station in Toryglen, and our van travels to it. The job depends on three replies, and our engineers ask for first — what went in, the quantity, and if your engine has run.

Then your tank is drained where the vehicle waits, and so the tainted fuel and the AdBlue come out together. The fuel system is rinsed thoroughly, which matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, because what it leaves behind doesn't rinse out on its own. The fuel filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested. The majority of these jobs are a half-hour job once our technicians arrive, provided your motor has not run. Explosion-proof pumps make a live forecourt sensible to work on, and they're quiet enough not to disturb the neighbours at night.

Fresh diesel goes in to prime your system, and that's the final step. You drive off as soon as our technicians have fired it up, and it makes no difference whether the vehicle is on a driveway around Toryglen or in a bay by Kings Park. Our technicians confirm it runs correctly on fresh diesel before we leave. Our engineers do it all wherever the vehicle has ended up, and it never needs to go to a workshop. Your insurer is likely to want an engineer's report and the VAT invoice — both yours once this job is done.

AdBlue in a diesel tank in Toryglen: the cost of fixing it

There is no honest single quote, because the jobs aren't the same. Whether the motor has run, and for how long, comes first in what moves the price. How much AdBlue was put in comes next, and then the location of the vehicle, because an open drive is easier for a technician to get to safely than a tight space behind Geoff Shaw Community Centre.

That is why every call from Toryglen starts with the same three questions, asked before giving a figure, not after: what got in, how much, and whether it's run. The replies turn a range into a straight price.

Priced by phone before the van sets out, the job is paid for on the day — card or phone, no deposit. As our engineer is on the way, dig out your insurance: plenty include misfuelling.
