Why does AdBlue in a diesel motor need its own filler?

Many modern diesels on the roads round Town End and Cliff carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to your motor. Stored in a tank of its own, AdBlue is sprayed into your exhaust stream to clean it.

Separate tanks, separate fillers. Under one flap, side by side: that's the layout on many vehicles. Elsewhere, AdBlue's filler is under the bonnet or in your boot instead. Topping up your diesel side at the pump happens all the time. Much less regularly, the AdBlue side gets topped up — mostly from a bottle, by a person working out where it goes. It's in the gap that the mistake happens.

How AdBlue in the diesel tank takes place around Town End

Seldom is it carelessness: usually three things coincide.

Haste follows from the warning. The car warns you as AdBlue runs low, and a dry tank puts the vehicle into limp mode — so the top-up gets done in a rush, before work on a driveway off Leyfield Bank, or on the way home in the car park outside Wooldale Arms.

Then, your hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old car — since a hire car, a new car or a company car places the fillers where your last one did not.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, and so nothing stops the tip after it has started. Wooldale or the middle of Town End: it is the same few seconds in both.

Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Before you tip anything, whether on a drive in New Town or a forecourt in Town End, check these. They take a couple of seconds.

  • Read the cap instead of going by where it sits: AdBlue caps are commonly blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel caps normally are not.
  • The size. On plenty of cars the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.
  • Check inside your fuel flap: plenty of vehicles carry a label there showing which fuel goes where.
  • In the boot or under the bonnet: that's where your filler is if it is not by your diesel cap, and the handbook says which.
  • Collecting a hire or company car, perhaps at the car park at Brockholes? Ask the person who drove the vehicle last before leaving, not when the light goes on.

How to top up without AdBlue in the diesel tank

Anywhere in West Yorkshire the light comes on, this is a routine for that day.

  • Park then switch off. Not on a slope, not with the engine running, and not in a rush on the side of Bank Lane.
  • Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, after you find the AdBlue filler and read it. Daft, yes, yet it works.
  • If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — and leave the vehicle on.
  • Stop when the tank fills or the bottle is empty; before that, tip gently through the built-in spout.
  • Only after that, start the vehicle: close the cap, check again, and make sure the diesel cap was never opened.

Stop there if you find, at stage two or three, that you've already poured into your diesel side. Leave out stage five altogether.

Already put AdBlue in the diesel tank around Town End?

Short order, then. Top of it: the engine remains off. Don't switch the ignition on; on many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump. Don't top up with diesel to dilute it: AdBlue does not mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where your fuel is drawn from.

The attendants at Murco, Texaco or another forecourt will normally lend a hand pushing the car clear when you ask. At home around Town End? Then the car stays where it is.

Where the motor has been run by now, stop somewhere safe and turn the car off. Town End sits under 10 miles from the Outlane Interchange; there, take the first exit. A short hop across Town End is a smaller job than a run towards Wakefield, under 15 miles away, and so tell us roughly how far it went.

What takes place when our engineers arrive around Town End

Wherever your car came to rest, be it outside New Mill Infant School, beside Wooldale Quaker Meeting House or at home, the van travels to it. Both the work and our quote depend on three answers — what fluid, what quantity, and whether it has run — so we ask. No one sets off until you have had our quote by phone.

The system is then flushed thoroughly, after the tank is drained. With AdBlue that counts more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it does not wash out on its own. A test comes last: before that, clean diesel is added, and your filter is flushed or changed if necessary. We don't go until it has been fired up and is running smoothly.

Most jobs are done in about half an hour after our engineers arrive, provided your motor hasn't run — and the pumps our technicians use are fine on a live forecourt yet quiet at night beside a house. You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer. Wrong-fuel cover is part of plenty of insurance policies — so use the wait to check yours.

No need to shift the vehicle. Draining happens right there, whether a drive, a road near Wooldale Methodist Free Church, or a layby on the way to Wooldale Recreation Ground. Ring and ask rather than guessing if you're close to a border, or somewhere hard to explain, like the back of Wooldale Community Centre.
