AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Townhead? Don't Start It

Motor off, ignition off: that is how you begin if AdBlue has gone into the diesel tank. In plain terms, AdBlue is simply urea in water. The harm begins once it is pulled through your pump — it will not ignite, and it will not combine with diesel. If your engine has not run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is normally emptied and carefully flushed where your car stands in Townhead. Before anything, ring us on 0333 366 0103.

Townhead, AdBlue in your diesel tank: what to do straight away

Things to do:

  • Pocket your keys, and that prevents anyone switching the electrics on.
  • Close to moving traffic? Then put the hazards on.
  • The empty bottle or the till receipt shows us the fluid and the amount, and so don't bin it out.
  • The van locates you quickest with a postcode starting CA11 9, or just the name of a street close by, and so call from the car.

Not to do:

  • No starting your motor — not for a second, not to reposition your vehicle.
  • Turning the key to ignition by itself starts the pump going on many diesels. Avoid it.
  • Pouring in more diesel does not work: AdBlue separates out instead of blending.
  • Any driving at all is to be avoided, even a short distance along Drovers Mews.
  • Emptying the tank yourself by the road is not one to try.

Rolling the car away from the island is a job for attendants to help with, wherever Townhead forecourt you're on, the BP included. At your own drive, do not move it at all.

AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

Made for your exhaust, AdBlue has no place in your motor. Its own reservoir keeps it, and from there it is sprayed into the exhaust, where it cleans the fumes. Not one side fits the other: urea doesn't belong in an injection pump, and a pump cannot deal with urea.

Poured in with the diesel, it keeps separate rather than mixing — quite different from fuel. It's heavier than diesel, so it sinks and collects at the bottom of your tank, which is where the pickup pulls fuel from. A car topped up on a drive in Scaws overnight and left unstarted is the straightforward one. Nothing has pulled the AdBlue up yet — but once your motor turns, that is what goes first, straight from the bottom of your tank.

Two kinds of damage follow from there. What remains when the water goes is urea, which turns into crystals: they settle in narrow passages and block filters. On top of that, it eats at some metals in the fuel system, and keeps going until it's cleared out. By daybreak, a vehicle parked in Townhead with AdBlue in its lines gets worse; if it's only in that tank, nothing changes. Diesel protects the high-pressure pump and each injector as it flows; water gives no lubrication, and that is a separate form of damage.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in Townhead

Why is AdBlue in a diesel regularly the bigger problem?

A fault of thin fuel is what you end up with after filling a diesel with petrol at the Esso. It mixes with your diesel, and while it is inside the tank it does no harm; the harm comes from running the motor on it.

The issue with AdBlue in a diesel is a totally wrong liquid. Not burning, it can't simply be run through. Deposits and corrosion remain after the following tankful, and AdBlue separates back from your diesel, so thinning it won't help. That is why the flush counts so much, and trying your engine "to see" costs more here than nearly any other slip — in Castletown or the centre of Townhead equally.

As with petrol, there's good news. Emptying a tank is the easiest job on a fuel system, and without running, the AdBlue stays in it — anywhere in Cumbria the vehicle sits.

AdBlue in a diesel tank in Townhead: how it ends up there

In dim light, two caps together — the AdBlue cap and the diesel one, now and then behind one flap — may appear the same. No one intends it; many layouts allow it. Most of the time it happens with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the drive, not at the pump.

Usually, it takes place in one of a few familiar ways. Hurrying, outside St Catherine's Catholic Primary School, Penrith, after a warning light flashed on during the school run, a parent tops up the car. Close to Drovers Lane, a driver pours a container in on that drive in the evening. Or a driver new to that flap refills the car in dim light, parked in the car park outside The Royal.

The least familiar vehicles see it most — rentals, new cars, company ones, and the spare vehicle of a family with both fuels. Wherever in Cumbria, Townhead included, the mistake doesn't change, and nor does the first step: leave it switched off.

AdBlue in the diesel tank in Townhead, and the motor started?

If so, the AdBlue is no longer inside your tank. Via the filter, along the lines, and — given any running time — on to the high-pressure pump and each injector: that's how far it has gone.

Watch for lumpy running, smoke, falling power, warnings on your dash, or a cut-out — coming back from St Catherines School Playing Field, perhaps, or midway across Townhead. When you safely can, stop then switch it off — without turning it on again to test. Each start pulls more of it through.

Townhead sits under a mile from the M6; if you were on it, leave at the first junction and pull up somewhere safe rather than driving on.

How far it went matters. A couple of hundred yards across Townhead to the car park by St Catherine's Church is a very different job from a run towards Carlisle, under 25 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into your system with each mile. About how far it had come is worth telling us.

There's more to flush once the engine has been started, and our engineers do all of it where the car has come to a stop. Spotted soon, it very seldom leaves lasting damage.

What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve around Townhead?

We come to the vehicle, wherever it has stopped around Townhead: a side street near Haydock Community Centre, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt. The work rests on three replies, which our technicians ask for before all else — which fluid got in, the quantity, and if your engine has run.

Then the tank is cleared where the vehicle sits, so the tainted fuel and the AdBlue come out together. With AdBlue, far more than with petrol, the flush matters: the fuel system is flushed all the way through since residue won't wash out by itself. Fresh diesel goes in after your filter is cleaned — or swapped, when it needs to be — and then the vehicle is tested. If your engine hasn't run, most jobs take about half an hour once our technicians arrive. Explosion-proof pumps mean a live forecourt safe to work on, and they're quiet enough to spare the neighbours at night.

Priming your system with fresh diesel comes last. You drive off as soon as our technicians have started the car, and it makes no difference whether your car is on a driveway around Townhead or in a bay outside Penrith. We confirm it runs properly on new diesel before leaving. We do it all wherever the vehicle has stopped, and it never needs to go to a garage. Afterwards, you are given the paperwork for the insurer: a VAT invoice and a written report from the engineer.

Townhead: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

Every job differs, so no single quote is honest. Whether the motor has run, and for how long, comes first in what shifts the price. How much AdBlue got in comes next, and then the location of the vehicle, since an open drive is easier for a technician to reach safely than a tight gap behind Christ Church.

Before a figure, not after, every call from Townhead begins with the same three questions: the liquid, the amount, and if it ran. Once they are answered, a range turns into a single firm number.

Our quote is quoted on the call, before a van leaves; settling up comes on the day, by card or by phone, and nothing upfront. Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it is worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.
