Townsend: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

If AdBlue has gone into your diesel tank, keep your engine off then keep your ignition off. AdBlue is urea dissolved in water. Unlike fuel, it neither burns nor mixes, and no harm starts until your motor sucks it through. Caught before the engine has run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is in Townsend. Phone 0333 366 0103 before you do anything else.

Those opening minutes: AdBlue in the diesel tank in Townsend

To do:

  • Pull the keys out, and so nobody switches your ignition on.
  • Near moving traffic? Then put the hazards on.
  • Keep the receipt or the empty bottle, so you can tell us what was put in and roughly how much.
  • Call us from where you are. A postcode starting SN10 3, or the name of the closest street, brings the van to you without a search.

Don't do these:

  • Shifting the car even a short way is no reason to fire up your engine.
  • Do not switch the ignition on. On plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.
  • Do not top up with diesel to thin it. AdBlue does not dilute in diesel; it separates out.
  • Keep it where it is instead of driving it anywhere, even a short distance up Matthews Close.
  • Don't try to drain the car yourself by the roadside.

On a forecourt around Townsend, whether it is the Murco or another one, ask the attendants to help you roll the vehicle away from the petrol pump. At your own driveway, don't touch it at all.

AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

The engine isn't what AdBlue is made for; the exhaust is. Its own reservoir holds it, and from there it's sprayed into your exhaust, and there it cleans the fumes. Not one side fits the other: urea does not belong in an injection pump, and a pump can't take urea.

Inside a diesel tank it behaves really differently from fuel. It doesn't mix in. Denser than diesel, it drops and pools underneath it — the same place the pickup sucks from. Easiest of all: a vehicle that got AdBlue in Horton overnight and hasn't turned since. The AdBlue sits at the foot of the tank, untouched — but it will be first through if your motor runs, ahead of any diesel at all.

From there it causes two kinds of damage. As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it's corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, and so it keeps running on the components it reaches for as long as it remains there. Where the AdBlue has reached the pipework, leaving it till morning in Townsend leaves it worse. In the tank only, time does nothing. Water protects nothing. The high-pressure pump and every injector need diesel flowing past them, so the water content harms them in its own right.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in Townsend

AdBlue in a diesel: why it's commonly worse than petrol

Fill a diesel with petrol by mistake over at the Esso, and this issue is diluted fuel. No harm is done as long as it sits unused, blended into the diesel — only when your motor works on it.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the fluid itself is simply the wrong one. Because it does not burn, running it through is not an option. Deposits and corrosion remain after the following fill, and AdBlue splits back out of the diesel, so thinning it won't help. Hence the flush counts more, and turning the key "to see" costs more here than almost any other slip — in Little Horton or the heart of Townsend alike.

The same good news applies as with petrol. Wherever in Wiltshire your vehicle has come to rest, an unrun motor leaves the AdBlue still in the reservoir: the easiest bit of any fuel system to empty.

How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank in Townsend?

Plenty of motors place the AdBlue cap beside the diesel cap, now and then behind a single flap, and after dark the two can look identical. Nobody intends it. Most of the time it happens with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the driveway, not at the pump.

Mostly, it occurs in one of a couple of familiar ways. Halfway through the morning drop-off, the dashboard flags it up, and outside All Cannings Church of England Primary School the top-up is hurried. A driver tips the container in at home, right off Greenhouse Road, as the day ends. Another pattern: darkness, the car park by Kings Arms, and a driver opening that flap the first time.

Hired vehicles, new cars, fleet motors, or the spare car in a home with one of each: the least known vehicles get it the most. Wherever in Wiltshire, Townsend as well, the mistake doesn't change, and neither does the first step: keep it switched off.

Started the engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank around Townsend?

The AdBlue has left the tank, then. It has been sucked through your filter and the lines, and if the engine ran for any time, it has got to the high-pressure pump and the fuel injectors.

Lumpy running, smoke from the exhaust, lost power, dashboard lights or stalling: each may show up, maybe part way across Townsend or returning from The Green. When safe, pull over and turn everything off — with no turning it on again to see. Each start pulls more of that through.

If you were on the M4, under 15 miles from Townsend, come off at the next exit and stop somewhere sensible instead of pressing on.

A quick hop across Townsend to the car park by All Cannings Village Hall is one thing; driving for Bath, under 25 miles away, is something else, because each mile carries the AdBlue further in. So distance counts. Tell us about how far it had come.

Our technicians do all of the cleaning where your car has ended up, and once the motor has been started there is more of it. Very seldom does it leave long-term damage when it is noticed early.

Emptying AdBlue in a diesel in Townsend: what it takes

Our engineers come to the car, wherever it has stopped in Townsend: a side street near All Saints, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt. Before anything else we ask what went in, about how much, and whether the motor has run, because those replies decide the work.

Next, emptying the tank right there takes out the polluted diesel and the AdBlue together. What remains from AdBlue won't flush away unaided, so the fuel system gets a full flush, which matters much more with urea than with petrol. Clean diesel goes in once the fuel filter is cleaned — or replaced, when it needs to be — and after that your vehicle is tested. The majority of these jobs are a half-hour visit once our engineers get there, if your engine hasn't run. Explosion-proof pumps make a busy forecourt sensible to work on, and they run quiet enough not to disturb the neighbours at night.

The last step is to prime your system on new diesel. You set off as soon as our technicians have started the car, and it makes no difference whether your car is on a drive around Townsend or in a bay at Pewsey. Our engineers check it runs correctly on clean diesel before we leave. The entire job is done where the vehicle is, so it never has to go to a garage. The insurer will want an engineer's report and your VAT invoice — each handed over once the job is done.

About Townsend and where it is

Townsend is a small suburban area in Wiltshire, situated near the riverside and surrounded by rolling countryside. Townsend sits at an elevation of around 125 metres, with views of the surrounding landscape. Townsend is located near several nearby places, including All Cannings, Allington, and Stanton St Bernard, and is approximately 20 miles from the city of Bath. Townsend has a population of around 591 people, predominantly living in detached housing.

Townsend and Wiltshire: AdBlue drains across the area

AdBlue jobs around Townsend are passed to teams that serve the places near it — All Cannings, Allington as well as Stanton St Bernard — and much of Wiltshire further out, across SN postcodes. Close to a boundary, or anywhere tricky to pin down? Asking beats guessing, so ring.

Anywhere the vehicle sits — a driveway at home, a residential street, a parking area, a forecourt — our engineers empty it there, with no need to bring it to us; which suits Townsend, a residential suburb, well.

Townsend: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

There's no honest single price, because the jobs are not the same. Whether the motor has run, and for how long, comes first in what changes the cost. How much AdBlue got in comes next, and then the position of the vehicle, since an open driveway is simpler for a technician to get to safely than a tight spot behind Stanton St Bernard Village Hall.

That's why each call from Townsend starts with the same three questions, asked before giving a figure, not after: what got in, how much, and if it's run. Their answers shrink the range down to a single figure.

Our quote is given on the call, before a van sets off; settling up comes on the day, by card or over the phone, and nothing upfront. Check your insurance whilst we're on the way: plenty carry misfuelling cover.
