Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Tregarth

With AdBlue in your diesel tank, the ignition stays off and so does your motor. In plain terms, AdBlue is just urea in water. It doesn't burn, it doesn't mix with diesel, and the harm it does begins when the fuel system pulls it in. If the motor hasn't run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually emptied and thoroughly flushed where the vehicle stands around Tregarth. Before you do anything else, phone 0333 366 0103.

Tregarth, AdBlue in the diesel tank: what to do right away

Do these:

  • Remove the keys, which prevents someone switching the electrics on.
  • Hazards on, if moving traffic is anywhere near.
  • So you can tell us which liquid it was and roughly what quantity, save the till receipt or the empty bottle.
  • Tell us a postcode starting LL57 4, or whatever street lies closest, and our van finds you directly — so ring from wherever you are.

Things not to do:

  • Do not start your motor, even for a moment to shift the vehicle.
  • Many diesels run their pump the instant your ignition goes on, so keep it off.
  • No extra fuel added. The AdBlue will not blend, so it is wasted.
  • Even a short stretch down Ffordd Tanrhiw is too far to drive the vehicle.
  • No emptying it yourself, either, on the verge.

Ask the people behind the counter to help you roll your car away from the pumps if you are on a forecourt in Tregarth, whether it's the EG Garages or elsewhere. If you are on your own drive, leave the vehicle just where it stands.

AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

The motor isn't what AdBlue is made for; your exhaust is. It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into your exhaust gas to fresh it. Nothing in it is supposed to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is built to handle it.

Inside a diesel tank it behaves really differently from fuel. It doesn't mix in. It sinks, because it is denser than diesel, and pools down where the pickup draws its fuel from. A vehicle topped up on a driveway in Bron Ogwen overnight and left unstarted is the straightforward one. Nothing has pulled the AdBlue up yet — but when your motor runs, that's what is pulled first, directly from the bottom of your tank.

From there it causes two kinds of harm. Crystals and corrosion. As the water evaporates, it leaves urea that hardens in filter elements and tiny passages; meanwhile, because it eats at certain metals, every part it touches suffers for as long as it stays in there. A motor left sitting around Tregarth with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue only in its tank isn't. Diesel protects the injection pump and each injector as it flows; water gives no lubrication, and that is a separate form of harm.

Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is often worse

Petrol pumped into a diesel on Texaco's forecourt makes your fuel watery — that's the main issue. No damage is done while it stays unused, blended into the diesel — only when your motor works on it.

The issue with AdBlue in a diesel is a completely unsuitable substance. It does not burn, so it can't simply be run through. Crystals and corrosion remain through the following tankful, and AdBlue separates again out of your diesel, and so watering it won't help. Hence the flush counts so much, and trying the engine "to see" costs more with AdBlue than nearly any other slip — in Felin-hen or the centre of Tregarth equally.

The same good news applies as with petrol. Anywhere across Gwynedd the vehicle has stopped, an unstarted motor leaves the AdBlue still in the tank: the simplest bit of any fuel system to empty.

How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank around Tregarth?

Nobody means to do it. The AdBlue filler on plenty of cars waits right next to your diesel filler, at times under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light. It mostly occurs outside the house, from a container grabbed on the journey home, rather than at the filling station.

Mostly, it happens in one of a couple of familiar ways. Halfway through the morning drop-off, the dashboard flags it up, and outside the local primary school the refill is hurried. A driver pours the bottle in outside their house, right off Hen Durnpike, as the day ends. One more version: darkness, the car park outside Pant yr Ardd, and a driver using that flap the first time.

It takes place most in the cars people know least: a hire car, a new car, a company car, or the second vehicle of a household with one diesel and one petrol. An identical slip, an identical first response — keep it switched off — wherever you happen to be in Tregarth or the remainder of Gwynedd.

Started the engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank in Tregarth?

Then the AdBlue has left that tank. It's been drawn through your filter and the lines, and if your engine ran for any time, it has got to the high-pressure fuel pump and the injectors.

Watch for lumpy running, smoke, falling power, lights on your dash, or a stall — returning from Parc y Dob, perhaps, or midway across Tregarth. No starting it again to test: pull over when it is safe, then turn it off. More of it is pulled through with each start.

Tregarth sits under 50 miles from the Moreton Spur; if you were on it, leave at the next junction and stop somewhere safe rather than carrying on.

Distance matters: every mile pushes the AdBlue further in, so driving towards Bangor, under 5 miles away, makes a far larger job than hopping across Tregarth to the car park by Shiloh. Roughly how far it had come is worth telling us.

Once your engine has been started, the flush takes in more, and all of it is done where the vehicle has come to a stop. Noticed quickly, it very seldom leaves long-term damage.

What clearing AdBlue from a diesel involves in Tregarth

Our technicians come to the car, wherever it has stopped in Tregarth: a side street close to Canolfan Tregarth, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt. Before anything else we ask what was put in, roughly how much, and if the engine has run, since those replies decide this work.

Then your tank is cleared where the car stands, so the contaminated fuel and the AdBlue come out together. With AdBlue, more so than with petrol, flushing counts: the fuel system is cleaned all the way through since what remains will not flush out by itself. After that, the fuel filter: flushed, or replaced when it must be. Then clean diesel, then a test of your vehicle. Engine not run? In that case count on roughly half an hour once we are there for most jobs. Our pumping gear is explosion-proof, and so a busy forecourt is no problem, and it is hushed enough for a residential street late at night.

Finally, your system is bled with new diesel. You head off as soon as our technicians have fired it up, and it makes no difference whether your car is on a drive in Tregarth or in a bay outside Bangor (Gwynedd). Our engineers make sure it runs correctly on new diesel before we leave. Because the job is done in full where your car is, a workshop never comes into it. At the end, you are given the paperwork for the insurer: a VAT invoice plus a written report from the engineer.

AdBlue drains across Tregarth and Gwynedd

AdBlue call-outs around Tregarth go to vans that cover the towns near it — Braich-talog, Sling plus Hen-durnpike — and most of Gwynedd beyond, across LL postcodes. Near a boundary, or anywhere tricky to pin down? Asking beats guessing, and so phone.

Anywhere the car sits — your driveway at home, a side street, a car park, a forecourt — our engineers drain it there, with no need to bring it to us; that suits Tregarth, a coastal village, well.

Tregarth: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

Each job differs, so no single price would be honest. The price shifts first with how long, if at all, the engine has been running, and next with the quantity of AdBlue that was put in. After that it depends on where the car is and whether a technician can get to it safely, which is simpler on an open driveway than in a tight spot behind Eglwys y Santes Fair / St Mary's Church.

For that in mind, every enquiry from Tregarth begins by asking the identical trio — which fluid went in, what quantity, if it ran — ahead of any quote. Given them, a range narrows to one firm number.

Before anyone heads out, you are told the price on the phone. And payment is on the day, card or by phone, with nothing upfront. Check your insurance whilst we are on the way: many include misfuelling cover.
