Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Tregony

With AdBlue in your diesel tank, the ignition remains off and so does your engine. AdBlue is urea mixed in water. The harm begins once it is sucked through your pump — it won't burn, and it won't combine with diesel. Caught before the engine has run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is around Tregony. First, call us on 0333 366 0103.

Those opening minutes: AdBlue in the diesel tank around Tregony

Do:

  • Keys out — then nobody can power anything on.
  • If you're at all close to moving traffic, put your hazards on.
  • Keep the till receipt or the empty bottle, so you can tell us what got in and roughly how much.
  • Tell us a postcode starting TR2 5, or whatever street is nearest, and our van finds you directly — so ring from wherever you are.

Do not do these:

  • Not even for a second, and not to roll the vehicle: the engine remains off.
  • Turning the key to ignition alone starts your pump going on many diesels. Skip it.
  • Adding extra diesel does not help: AdBlue separates out rather than thinning.
  • Any driving at all is best avoided, even a short distance along Fore Street.
  • No emptying it yourself, at all, at the roadside.

Get the attendants to help you move the vehicle off the island if you're at a forecourt around Tregony, whether it is the Texaco or somewhere else. On your own drive, don't move it at all.

AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

Not the engine but the exhaust is where AdBlue belongs. It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into the exhaust gas to clean it. Nothing in it is meant to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is built to handle it.

Fuel blends; AdBlue, after poured in, will not. Its behaviour is nothing like fuel's. The intake sucks fuel from the lowest part of the tank, and that is just where AdBlue settles: being heavier than diesel, it sinks. A vehicle topped up on a driveway in Parkengear overnight and not started since counts as the straightforward case. No pump has pulled the AdBlue up yet — but once your engine runs, that is what is pulled first, straight from the bottom of the tank.

From there it causes two kinds of damage. As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it is corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, and so it keeps working on the parts it reaches for as long as it remains there. Pipes carrying AdBlue mean damage overnight for a vehicle sitting in Tregony. Just in the tank, it stays the same. Then there's the water: it offers no protection to the parts that need it most — the high-pressure pump and each injector.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in Tregony

Why AdBlue in a diesel is regularly more major than petrol

Petrol pumped into a diesel on Gulf's forecourt leaves the fuel thin — that is the main fault. Mixed into your diesel and sitting still, it is harmless for now; running your engine does the harm.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the fluid as such is simply the wrong one. Not burning, it can't just be run through. Whether the car is in Tresawle or the centre of Tregony, turning it over "to see" costs more with AdBlue than nearly any other error, and the flush counts more. Why: it won't remain mixed, so watering it down is impossible; and crystals and corrosion outlast the next fill.

As with petrol, there's good news. Anywhere in Cornwall the vehicle has stopped, an unrun motor leaves the AdBlue still in the reservoir: the simplest part of any fuel system to clear.

Tregony: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

Plenty of cars place the AdBlue cap alongside the diesel cap, now and then under a single flap, and in dim light the two can look the same. Nobody intends it. Usually it is never the filling station: a driver picks up a bottle driving home and pours it in at home.

A few familiar ways account for most cases. Rushing, outside Tregony Community Primary School, after a warning lamp flashed on during the school run, someone tops up your car. A driver pours the bottle in at home, right off Well Street, as the day ends. Or a driver new to that flap refills your car in dim light, parked in the car park by The King's Arms.

Hired motors, brand-new cars, fleet cars, or the spare car in a family with both fuels: the least known vehicles see it the most. Same mistake, an identical first step — leave it off — wherever you happen to be around Tregony or the rest of Cornwall.

AdBlue in your diesel tank around Tregony, and your engine started?

Then your tank is no longer where the AdBlue is. Your filter and pipework have had it sucked along, and some running carries it on to the high-pressure pump and every injector.

Perhaps returning from Carveth Wood, or midway across Tregony, your motor may run lumpy, smoke, drop power, flash your dash or stall. Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and do not restart it to check. With each start, more of that is pulled through.

Leave the M5, over 50 miles from Tregony, by the first junction and stop somewhere safe, rather than driving on.

How far it went matters. A few hundred yards across Tregony to the car park by St Cubys Church is a very different job from a run towards Truro, under 10 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into your system with every mile. Let us know roughly how far it had come.

Wherever your car came to a halt is where all of it gets done, even with more to rinse out after your engine has been run. Lasting damage is very uncommon if it is spotted early.

What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve around Tregony?

Our engineers come to the vehicle, wherever it has stopped around Tregony: a side street near St Cornelius, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt. Which fluid got in, roughly the quantity, and whether your motor has turned over: our engineers check before all else, since those decide the work.

Then the tank is emptied where your car waits, so the polluted fuel and the AdBlue come out together. The fuel system is rinsed thoroughly, which counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, since what it leaves behind doesn't rinse out on its own. Clean diesel goes in once your filter is cleaned — or swapped, when it needs to be — and after that the car is tested. If the engine hasn't run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once our engineers are there. The pumps are explosion-proof, safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

The last step is to bleed your system on new diesel. Firing it up comes next, and then you set off from where the vehicle is parked, by Truro or on a drive around Tregony. It's checked on clean diesel to confirm it runs smoothly before our technicians leave. No workshop is required at any point, with the entire job done then and there. Your insurer will want an engineer's report and the VAT invoice — both yours afterwards.

Tregony: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

Since each callouts differ, a single price would not be honest. Whether the motor has been running, and for how long, comes first in what moves the cost. How much AdBlue got in comes next, and then the position of the car, since an open driveway is simpler for our van to reach safely than a tight space behind St Crida.

Which fluid got in, how much, and whether the engine ran: every Tregony call opens by asking precisely that, ahead of a figure, never afterwards. When those are known, a range turns into one fixed number.

The price is quoted on the call, before anyone leaves; settling up comes on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront. As the van is on the way, dig out your policy: many include misfuelling.
