AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Trehafren? Don't Start It

If AdBlue has got into the diesel tank, leave the engine off and keep the ignition off. Urea dissolved in water is what AdBlue is. It doesn't burn, it does not mix with diesel, and the damage it does starts when your fuel system pulls it in. If your engine has not run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is generally emptied and thoroughly flushed where the vehicle stands in Trehafren. No step comes before ringing 0333 366 0103.

Your next steps right now, Trehafren: AdBlue in your diesel tank

Do these:

  • So no one can switch your ignition on, pull the keys out.
  • Put the hazards on if you are at all near moving traffic.
  • The empty bottle or the receipt tells us the product and the quantity, and so don't bin it away.
  • Call right where you are. Say a SY16 1 postcode or the closest street name, and no one has to search for you.

Never do these:

  • Shifting your car just a short way is no reason to start your engine.
  • Many diesels power their fuel pump the instant your ignition comes on, and so leave the car off.
  • Adding more diesel does not work: AdBlue settles out rather than thinning.
  • Even a short way down Lon Cerddyn is too far to drive the vehicle.
  • Don't try to drain the vehicle yourself at the kerbside.

Rolling your vehicle away from the island is a job for attendants to help with, wherever Trehafren forecourt you are on, the BP included. If you are on your own drive, leave the car precisely where it stands.

AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

Not your motor but your exhaust is where AdBlue is meant to go. From a separate tank it goes straight to your exhaust, cleaning what your engine emits. No part inside a fuel pump is made for this fluid — and none of it was intended to travel that way.

It does not combine. Once it is poured into a tank of diesel, AdBlue acts nothing like fuel. It's heavier than diesel, so it sinks and collects at the bottom of the tank, which is where the pickup sucks fuel from. When your system runs, the AdBlue is top of the list to go through. Before then it waits underneath your diesel, which is how a vehicle topped up in Nantoer last night and never started remains the straightforward one, provided nobody touches your key.

From there it does two kinds of damage. Crystals and corrosion. As the water evaporates, it strands urea that hardens in filters and narrow channels; meanwhile, since it eats at some metals, each part it reaches suffers for as long as it remains in there. Overnight, a vehicle parked in Trehafren with AdBlue in its lines gets worse; if it is just inside the tank, nothing changes. Then there is the water: it offers no protection to the components that need it the most — the injection pump and each injector.

Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is regularly worse

Fill a diesel with petrol by mistake over at the Tesco, and the problem is diluted fuel. It mixes with the diesel, and whilst it is inside that tank it does no harm; the damage comes from running your engine on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is a fault of the wrong substance altogether. It doesn't burn, and so it cannot simply be run through. Whether your car is in Newtown or the centre of Trehafren, turning it over "to see" does more harm with AdBlue than nearly any other slip, and the flush counts for more. The reasons: it won't remain mixed, and so watering it down is impossible; and deposits and corrosion outlast the next fill.

The same good news applies as with petrol. Wherever around Powys your car has stopped, an unrun engine means the AdBlue still in the tank: the easiest bit of a fuel system to clear.

How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank in Trehafren

Many vehicles place the AdBlue filler beside the diesel one, occasionally behind a single flap, and in dim light the two can look identical. No one means it. Usually it's not the filling station: a driver picks up a bottle heading home and tips it in outside the house.

The ways it takes place are few and familiar. Midway through the drop-off, the dashboard warns, and outside the local primary school the top-up is rushed. Close to Lon PInwydd, a driver pours a container in on the drive after work. Or someone new to that flap tops up the car in dim light, parked in the car park by The Buck.

It happens most in the motors people know least: a hire car, a new car, a company car, or the second vehicle of a household with one diesel and one petrol. Keep it off: that is the first response to an identical slip, wherever around Trehafren or the rest of Powys you are.

AdBlue in the diesel tank in Trehafren, and the engine started?

If so, the AdBlue is no longer in the tank. Your filter and lines have had it pulled through, and some running time takes it on to the injection pump and each injector.

You may notice your motor running roughly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, maybe on the way back from Trehafren Hill or halfway across Trehafren. Once you safely can, stop then switch everything off — with no restarting to see. Each start pulls more of it through.

Trehafren lies under 50 miles from the M54; if you were on it, exit at the next junction and pull up somewhere safe instead of driving on.

How far it went counts. A few hundred yards across Trehafren to the car park by Maldwyn Leisure Centre is a very different job from a run towards Wrexham, under 50 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into your system with every mile. Let us know about how far it had come.

Wherever the car came to a stop is where all of it gets done, even with more to clean out after the engine has been run. Noticed soon, it very seldom leaves lasting damage.

What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve around Trehafren?

We come to the car, wherever it has stopped around Trehafren: a side street close to Newtown Evangelical Church, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt. What went in, about the quantity, and if the engine has been run: our technicians ask before all else, since those shape the job.

Next, emptying the tank right there takes out the contaminated diesel and the AdBlue together. The fuel system is rinsed thoroughly, which counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, since what it leaves behind doesn't rinse out on its own. After that, the fuel filter: cleaned, or changed if it must be. Then fresh diesel, then a check of your car. Most of these jobs are a half-hour visit once our engineers turn up, if your engine has not run. The pumps are explosion-proof, safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

The final step is to bleed your system on clean diesel. Firing it up comes next, and then you head off from where the vehicle is parked, at Newtown (Powys) or on a driveway in Trehafren. We make sure it runs correctly on new diesel before we go. We do it all wherever the car has stopped, and it never needs to be taken to a workshop. Insurers ask for a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and both come at the end.

What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right around Trehafren

Since each jobs vary, a single price would not be fair. What changes the cost is, firstly, whether the motor has been running and for how long; then how much AdBlue was put in; and after that where the car is and whether our van can reach it safely, which is simpler on an open drive than in a tight spot behind Hope Church.

That's why every call from Trehafren starts with the same three questions, asked before giving a figure, not after: what got in, how much, and if it's run. Their answers shrink a range down to a single number.

You hear that price on the phone, before anyone heads out, and you pay on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront. As our engineer is travelling, check your insurance: plenty include misfuelling.
