Tremar Coombe: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Avoid It?
Leave the motor and ignition off then ring 0333 366 0103 first — the rest can wait if AdBlue is already in the diesel tank. Normally, when your motor hasn't turned, it's emptied and fully rinsed where the car is around Tremar Coombe. The rest of this page explains why it takes place and how to make sure it does not — handy if you are reading before it has happened.
AdBlue in a diesel motor: two tanks, two fillers
Plenty of modern diesels on the roads about Tremar Coombe and St Cleer carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to your motor. Kept in a tank of its own, AdBlue is sprayed into your exhaust stream to clean it.
Each tank has one filler of its own. Under one flap, side by side: that's the layout on a lot of motors. On others, AdBlue's filler sits beneath the bonnet or in the boot instead. Topping up your diesel side at the pump goes on all the time. The AdBlue side is topped up far less often, usually from a bottle, and normally by a person who has to stop and think where it goes. The error lives in that gap.
Tremar Coombe: how AdBlue in your diesel tank happens
Three things tend to come together, and carelessness is seldom one of them.
On a driveway off Chapel Row before work, or in the car park at Market Inn on the way home: that is where the hurried top-up takes place. Why the rush? As AdBlue gets low your car tells you, and if it is gone, limp mode kicks in.
Next, your hand reaches for the cap it knew on the old car — since a hire car, a new car or a company car places the fillers somewhere your last one didn't.
And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, so nothing stops the pour once it has started. Lower Tremar or the heart of Tremar Coombe: it is the same few seconds either way.
The AdBlue filler and the diesel filler: telling them apart
A few seconds is all these take — so run through them before you tip anything, on a drive in Higher Tremarcoombe or a forecourt around Tremar Coombe.
- The cap. The AdBlue cap is often blue, or marked "AdBlue". Your diesel cap normally isn't. Read it instead of going by position.
- On many motors, size tells: AdBlue gets the smaller filler neck.
- A label inside the fuel flap often says which fuel goes where, on many motors. Check for it.
- Can't find it beside the diesel filler? Then look beneath the bonnet or in the boot — the owner's manual says which.
- The person who drove the vehicle last. On a hire or company car collected from somewhere like the car park at Liskeard, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.
AdBlue top-ups that never reach the diesel tank
Wherever in Cornwall the light comes on, here is a routine for that day.
- Stop on level, motor off, with time in hand — not hurried on the side of Fernside Park.
- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds daft and it does the trick.
- The diesel cap stays on. Where both sit under a flap, confirm it is closed before the bottle comes up.
- Finish once that tank fills or the bottle is empty; before that, tip gently using its own spout.
- Before starting the car, close the cap and check a second time that your diesel cap never opened off.
Stop there if you find, at step two or three, that you've already poured into the diesel side. Don't carry on to stage five.
AdBlue in the diesel tank already, around Tremar Coombe?
Brief list, then. Top of that: your motor stays unstarted. Leave the ignition off too, because on plenty of diesels switching it on alone runs your fuel pump. Don't top up with diesel to thin it: AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where the fuel is drawn from.
Ask the attendants to help roll the car clear of the pump if you are on a forecourt — the BP, the Morrisons or anywhere else. At home in Tremar Coombe? Then your car remains put.
If your motor has already run, stop as soon as it is safe and switch off. The next junction means where to leave when you're on the M5, under 50 miles from Tremar Coombe. Roughly how far did it go? Crossing Tremar Coombe is less work than a run of under 25 miles towards Plymouth, and so tell us.
When our technicians arrive in Tremar Coombe, what happens?
Our technicians come to the car wherever it has stopped, whether that is outside St Cleer Primary Academy, close to St Cleer Village Hall or on your own drive. Both the work and our price rest on three answers — what fluid, what quantity, and if it's run — so our technicians ask. On the call itself, you are told the price — before dispatch.
Then the tank is drained and the fuel system rinsed thoroughly. Unlike petrol, AdBlue forms crystals and attacks some fuel-system metals, and none of it clears out by itself. That is why it matters more. Filter cleaned or, where needed, swapped; fresh diesel in; and then a test of your car. We don't leave until it has been started and is running correctly.
Most jobs are done in about half an hour once our engineers get there, as long as the motor has not run — and the pumps we use are fine on a live forecourt yet quiet at night outside a house. You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer. Before we get there, take a look at your insurance documents; many carry cover for misfuelling.
