AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Treowen: How It Occurs and How to Stop It
AdBlue already in the diesel tank? In that case put this page aside for now, leave the ignition and engine off, and ring 0333 366 0103. Around Treowen, catching it before your engine turns normally leaves a drain and a thorough flush on the spot. Not happened yet? Below, the rest of the page covers the reasons it happens and the ways to prevent it for good.
Why does AdBlue in a diesel car need its own filler?
Many modern diesels in Old Treowen, like those in Treowen, run on two liquids; the motor takes only your diesel. Kept in a tank of its own, AdBlue is sprayed into the exhaust stream to clean it.
There is a filler for every tank. Under one flap, next to each other: that's the layout on many motors. On others, AdBlue's filler sits under the bonnet or in your boot instead. Diesel gets filled at every forecourt visit, again and again. Rarely topped up, AdBlue normally comes out of a bottle, poured by a driver who must stop and think which filler to use. It is in that gap that the slip lives.
Treowen: how AdBlue in your diesel tank occurs
It is hardly ever carelessness. Three things tend to line up.
The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the car tells you, and if it runs out completely, the vehicle goes into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a driveway off Hillside before work, or in the car park outside Newbridge Hotel on the way home.
Then, the hand goes for the cap it would have used on the old vehicle — since a rental car, a new car or a company car places the fillers somewhere your last one did not.
Lastly, the bottle goes in: a diesel filler or AdBlue one, it goes in as readily, and after the pour begins, no part stops it. The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of Treowen or out in Crumlin.
Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?
A few seconds is all the checks take — so run through them before you pour anything, on a drive in Swffryd or a forecourt in Treowen.
- The cap. The AdBlue cap is commonly blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap usually isn't. Read it rather than going by where it sits.
- On many motors, size tells: AdBlue has the smaller filler neck.
- Check inside your fuel flap: plenty of motors carry a label there saying which fuel goes where.
- The handbook says which it is when your filler is not next to your diesel cap: your boot, or under the bonnet.
- The previous driver will know. Ask as you pick up a rental or fleet car — from Newbridge's car park, say — not when the warning appears.
Keeping AdBlue out of the diesel tank when you top up
A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever in Caerphilly that is.
- Stop somewhere level, motor off, with time to spare — never hurried on the side of Commercial Road.
- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds daft and it does the trick.
- Leave the diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.
- Finish once your tank is topped up or the bottle is empty; before that, tip slowly through its built-in spout.
- Before you start your car, shut the cap and check a second time that your diesel cap never came off.
Find at the second or third step that the bottle went in the diesel tank? That's where you stop. Skip stage five altogether.
AdBlue in your diesel tank already, in Treowen?
Brief list, then. First: the motor remains off. The fuel pump runs on plenty of diesels the moment your ignition goes on — and so leave it off. Filling up with diesel won't weaken it: instead, AdBlue sinks to the bottom of that tank, just where the fuel is drawn from.
If you are at a forecourt, whether it is the Texaco or the another forecourt nearby, ask the staff to help push your car away from the pump. If you're on your own driveway in Treowen, leave it where it sits.
Where the motor has been run already, stop safely then switch the car off. The next junction means where to come off when you're on the M4, under 10 miles from Treowen. Tell us roughly how far it went: a run towards Newport, under 10 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Treowen.
Our arrival in Treowen, and what occurs next
Anywhere your car has stopped, whether by the local primary school, beside Swffryd Community Centre or on your own drive, our van travels to it. Which liquid got in, the amount, and if it ran: our engineers ask because the replies set both work and quote. On the phone call itself, you hear our quote — ahead of dispatch.
Emptying that tank comes next, followed by a full flush of the system. With AdBlue that counts more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it does not wash out on its own. The filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested. We don't go until it has been started and is running smoothly.
With pumps safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough for use outside a house at night, most jobs in which the engine has not run need roughly half an hour after we arrive. The insurer usually wants an engineer's report and the VAT invoice, and both are yours at the end. Payment is on the day, with no deposit. While we travel, have a look at your policy; plenty include cover for misfuelling.

Treowen drivers: the short version
Pour no AdBlue until you've read the cap. If AdBlue has gone in the diesel tank anyway, leave it off and phone 0333 366 0103. Petrol in Diesel empties it where it stands, anywhere around Caerphilly.
