AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Trevigro? Don't Start It

If AdBlue has gone into your diesel tank, leave your motor off then leave your ignition off. In plain terms, AdBlue is simply urea in water. The trouble starts once it is sucked through the pump — it won't burn, and it will not combine with diesel. Caught before your motor has been run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is normally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is around Trevigro. Nothing comes before ringing 0333 366 0103.

Your next steps straight away, Trevigro: AdBlue in the diesel tank

To do:

  • Take the keys out, and so no one switches your ignition on.
  • Close to moving traffic? Then put the hazard lights on.
  • Which product, and roughly how much quantity? Save the bottle or the till receipt, and our technicians will know.
  • Ring right where you are. Quote a PL17 7 postcode or the closest street sign, and nobody has to search for you.

Not to do:

  • Shifting the vehicle even a few yards is no reason to fire up the motor.
  • Don't switch your ignition on. On plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.
  • AdBlue does not mix in diesel — it separates out — so adding extra diesel will not weaken it.
  • Even a short way down Haye Road is too far to drive the car.
  • By the road, don't try emptying it on your own.

The attendants on duty at any Trevigro forecourt — the Tesco included — will normally lend a hand pushing it aside if you ask. At home, the car remains exactly where it was left.

What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

AdBlue is made for your exhaust, not the engine. From a dedicated reservoir it goes directly to your exhaust, cleaning what the engine emits. Neither side suits the other: urea doesn't belong in a pump, and a pump cannot deal with urea.

Tipped in with your diesel, it keeps apart instead of blending — entirely unlike fuel. It drops, since it is heavier than diesel, and settles down where the pickup draws its supply from. A vehicle topped up on a driveway in Maders overnight and not started since counts as the straightforward one. Nothing has sucked the AdBlue up so far — but once your motor runs, that is what goes first, directly from the bottom of that tank.

After it is drawn in, the damage comes in two forms. It attacks certain metals used in fuel systems, working on any part it reaches till it's cleared from the system. And when the water evaporates, the urea forms crystals that block filters and lodge in tiny passages. A vehicle left sitting around Trevigro with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue just in its tank isn't. Diesel protects the high-pressure pump and each injector as it flows; water offers no lubrication, which is a second kind of harm.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in Trevigro

AdBlue in a diesel: why it is commonly worse than petrol

Put petrol in a diesel at the Gulf and you have a problem of thin fuel. No damage comes while it stays put, mixed into the diesel — only when the engine runs on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is another problem: not thin fuel, yet no fuel at all. Since it doesn't burn, running it through isn't an option. Whether the vehicle is in Trewoodloe or the centre of Trevigro, firing it up "to see" costs more with AdBlue than nearly any other mistake, and the flush counts more. Why: it will not remain mixed, so watering it down fails; and deposits and corrosion outlast the next tankful.

With AdBlue, the good news is no different from petrol. Emptying a tank is the simplest part on a fuel system, and with no start-up, the AdBlue remains in there — wherever in Cornwall the vehicle sits.

How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank around Trevigro?

No one means to do it. The AdBlue filler on plenty of motors waits right next to your diesel filler, occasionally under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light. A bottle picked up while driving home and poured in outside the house, rather than at the filling station, is the usual story.

It tends to occur in a couple of familiar ways. Hurrying, outside Callington Primary School, after a warning lamp flashed on during the school run, a parent tops up your car. After work, a container goes in on a driveway near Haye Lane. Or a driver unfamiliar with that flap tops up your vehicle after dark, parked in the car park by the pub in the village.

It crops up most in a hire car, a new motor, a fleet motor, or the other vehicle of a family with both fuel types — the vehicles drivers use the least. Wherever you are in Trevigro or the rest of Cornwall, it is the same mistake and the same first answer: leave the car off.

Already started your engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank around Trevigro?

If so, the AdBlue is no longer inside that tank. Via your filter, along the lines, and — with any running time — on to the injection pump and each injector: that's where it travels.

Watch for rough running, exhaust smoke, falling power, lights on your dash, or a stall — coming back from Oidgerton Wood, perhaps, or part way across Trevigro. Pull over when it is safe. Switch off. Leave it off rather than testing it again. Each start pulls more of it through.

If you were on the M5, under 50 miles from Trevigro, come off at the next junction and stop somewhere safe instead of pressing on.

Distance counts: each mile carries the AdBlue further into the system, and so heading towards Plymouth, under 15 miles away, makes a far bigger job than hopping across Trevigro to the car park by South Hill Parish Hall. Tell us roughly how far it had come.

Wherever your car came to a halt is where all of it gets done, even with more to flush after the engine has been started. Very rarely does it leave permanent damage if it is caught quickly.

Emptying AdBlue in a diesel around Trevigro: what it takes

The vehicle stays put, whether that is a street beside Callington Heritage Centre, a driveway, a layby or a forecourt around Trevigro, and our van travels to it. Which fluid went in, about the quantity, plus if your engine has turned over: we ask first, since those shape the job.

On the spot, that tank is then drained, and all of the polluted diesel and the urea leave at once. Your system is flushed thoroughly, which matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, because what it leaves behind doesn't rinse out on its own. A test of your vehicle comes at the end, after clean diesel goes in and your filter gets flushed or, if needed, swapped. If your motor has not run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once our engineers arrive. The equipment is explosion-proof, so a busy filling station is no issue, and it is quiet enough for a residential street late at night.

Bleeding the fuel system with clean diesel comes at the end. Then our technicians start the car and you drive off, whether from a parking bay by Gunnislake or a driveway around Trevigro. Before we go, our engineers check it's running correctly with fresh diesel in. As the job is done in its entirety where the car is, a workshop never comes into it. Afterwards, you are given the paperwork for the insurer: a VAT invoice and a written report from the engineer.

What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out in Trevigro?

There is no honest single quote, because the jobs aren't the same. The cost shifts first with how long, if at all, the motor has been running, and next with the quantity of AdBlue that went in. After that it depends on where the car is and whether our van can reach it safely, which is simpler on an open drive than in a tight spot behind Callington Methodist Church.

Before any figure, not after, every call from Trevigro begins with the same three questions: the liquid, the amount, plus whether the engine ran. Once they are known, a range becomes a single fixed number.

Before anyone sets off, you are told our quote on the phone. Then you pay on the day, card or over the phone, with nothing upfront. Look at your insurance while we are on the way: plenty include misfuelling cover.
