Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Trewen

Motor off, ignition off: that is how you begin if AdBlue has got into your diesel tank. In plain terms, AdBlue is simply urea in water. It doesn't burn, it does not mix with diesel, and the harm it does begins when the fuel system draws it in. If your motor hasn't run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually drained and thoroughly rinsed where the car sits around Trewen. Phone 0333 366 0103 before you do anything else.

AdBlue in your diesel tank around Trewen: the first few minutes

To do:

  • Pocket your keys, which prevents someone switching the power on.
  • If you're anywhere near moving traffic, put the hazard lights on.
  • So you can give us which liquid it was and roughly what quantity, keep the receipt or the empty bottle.
  • The van locates you quickest with a postcode starting LL16 3, or simply the name of a street nearby, so phone from the spot.

Don't:

  • Do not start the motor, even for a moment to move your car.
  • Don't switch your ignition on. On plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.
  • No extra fuel added. The AdBlue won't blend, so it is pointless.
  • Even a short distance down Trewen is too far to drive the car.
  • Draining that tank yourself by the road isn't worth trying.

Rolling the car off the pumps is a job for staff to help with, whichever Trewen forecourt you are on, the Texaco or any other. On that drive, the car remains just where it is.

What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

AdBlue is made for the exhaust, not the engine. Its own reservoir keeps it, and from there it is fed into the exhaust, and there it cleans the gas. Nothing in it is meant to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is designed to handle it.

Fuel blends; AdBlue, once tipped in, won't. The behaviour is nothing like diesel's. The pickup takes fuel from the lowest part of that tank, and that's just where AdBlue ends up: being denser than diesel, it sinks. Once your pump runs, the AdBlue is top of the list to be pulled through. Before then it sits underneath your diesel, and that is why a vehicle topped up in Copenhagen last night and not switched on stays the simple case, provided nobody turns your key.

It causes two kinds of harm from there. What is left when the water evaporates is urea, which turns into crystals: they settle in tiny channels and clog filters. On top of that, it eats at certain metals in a fuel system, and keeps going till it is flushed out. A motor left standing in Trewen with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue just in its tank isn't. Water lubricates nothing. The injection pump and each injector need diesel flowing past them, and so the water part damages them by itself.

Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is regularly worse

Petrol put into a diesel on R Smith & Son's forecourt leaves your fuel thin — that is the whole issue. Harm just comes from running on it. Mixed into the diesel and left inside your tank, it does nothing.

AdBlue in a diesel is another problem: not thin fuel, but no fuel at all. It does not burn, so it can't just be run through. Whether your vehicle is in Denbigh or the centre of Trewen, firing it up "to see" does more harm with AdBlue than nearly any other mistake, and the flush matters for more. Why: it will not remain mixed, so diluting it fails; and crystals and corrosion outlast the following tankful.

With AdBlue, the good news is no distinct from petrol. Anywhere around Denbighshire your car has come to rest, an unstarted engine leaves the AdBlue yet inside the reservoir: the simplest part of any fuel system to clear.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around Trewen: how it ends up there

After dark, two caps together — the AdBlue one and the diesel one, now and then behind a single flap — may appear the same. Nobody intends it; many designs allow it. A bottle picked up while heading home and poured in at home, instead of at the filling station, is the usual route.

The ways it takes place are few and familiar. The top-up gets hurried outside the local primary school, because your dash flashed with a warning as the children were taken off. A driver tips the bottle in outside their house, right off Mytton Park, as the day ends. Or your car is topped up in the car park outside Plas Pigot Country Club, in poor light, by a person who has never opened that flap before.

The least known vehicles get it most — rentals, brand-new ones, fleet cars, and the spare vehicle in a family with one of each fuels. Leave it off: that is the first response to the same mistake, wherever around Trewen or the rest of Denbighshire you happen to be.

Started the motor with AdBlue in the diesel tank around Trewen?

Then the AdBlue has left the tank. It has been drawn through the filter and your lines, and if the motor ran for any time, it has reached your high-pressure pump and the fuel injectors.

Expect rough running, smoke, falling power, lights on the dash, or a stall — returning from Parc Alafowlia, perhaps, or midway across Trewen. When you safely can, pull over then turn it off — without turning it on again to see. With each start, more of it is pulled through.

Trewen lies under 25 miles from the M53; if you were on it, leave at the next junction and pull up somewhere safe rather than carrying on.

Mileage matters: every mile pushes the AdBlue further in, and so driving towards St Asaph, under 10 miles away, gives a far larger job than hopping across Trewen to the car park by Denbigh Leisure Centre. Let us know roughly how far it had come.

Wherever your car came to a halt is where all of it gets done, even with more to clean out once your engine has been run. Spotted early, it very seldom leaves lasting damage.

What clearing AdBlue from a diesel involves in Trewen

Anywhere it has come to rest around Trewen — a filling station, a layby, a driveway, a street beside Denbigh Friary — our van travels to the car. The job depends on three replies, and our engineers ask for before all else — which fluid got in, the amount, and whether the engine has run.

Next, draining the tank on the spot removes the contaminated diesel and the AdBlue together. A careful flush counts far more with AdBlue than with petrol, because what remains will not wash away by itself. Testing your vehicle follows last, once fresh diesel is added and the fuel filter gets cleaned or, if needed, swapped. If the motor hasn't run, most jobs take about half an hour once our technicians are there. The pumping gear is explosion-proof, and so a busy filling station is no issue, and it's hushed enough for a residential street late at night.

The final step is to prime the system on new diesel. Starting the engine comes next, and then you set off from where your car is parked, outside Rhyl or on a driveway in Trewen. Before we go, we confirm it's running smoothly with fresh diesel in. The whole job is done where the vehicle is, so it never needs to be taken to a garage. Insurers ask for a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and you get both at the end.

AdBlue in a diesel tank in Trewen: the cost of fixing it

Because each jobs vary, a single price wouldn't be honest. The price moves first with how long, if at all, your engine has been running, and next with the quantity of AdBlue that went in. After that it depends on where the vehicle is and whether a technician can get to it safely, which is easier on an open driveway than in a tight spot behind Gorsedd Stones.

With that in mind, each call from Trewen begins with the same trio — what got in, what quantity, if it ran — before a quote. When they are known, a range becomes one fixed figure.

Before anyone sets off, you hear the quote by phone. And payment is on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing in advance. Misfuelling cover comes with many insurance policies, so it pays to look at yours before the van arrives.
