AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Trimsaran? Keep It Switched Off

If AdBlue has gone into your diesel tank, keep the motor off then keep your ignition off. Chemically, AdBlue is just urea in water. It doesn't burn, it doesn't mix with diesel, and the harm it does starts when your fuel system draws it in. If the engine hasn't run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is normally emptied and carefully purged where your car stands in Trimsaran. First, phone us on 0333 366 0103.

Those opening minutes: AdBlue in your diesel tank in Trimsaran

Do these:

  • So nobody can switch the ignition on, pull your keys out.
  • If you're anywhere close to moving traffic, put the hazard lights on.
  • The empty bottle or your receipt shows us the product and the amount, so do not throw it out.
  • Ring us from where you are. A postcode starting SA17 4, or the name of the closest street, gets our van to you without a search.

Don't do these:

  • No starting your motor — not for a second, not to shift the car.
  • Many diesels power their pump the moment your ignition comes on, so leave the vehicle off.
  • Pouring in more diesel does not work: AdBlue settles out instead of thinning.
  • Any driving at all is best avoided, even a short way up Culla Road.
  • Don't try to drain it yourself at the roadside.

Rolling the car off the pumps is a job for attendants to help with, whichever Trimsaran forecourt you're on, the Chivers Corner included. On your own driveway, do not touch it at all.

What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

The motor isn't what AdBlue is made for; the exhaust is. From a dedicated tank it goes directly to the exhaust, treating what the motor lets out. No part in a fuel pump is designed for this fluid — and no part of that was intended to travel that way.

Poured in with the diesel, it stays apart rather than blending — quite different from fuel. It drops, because it's heavier than diesel, and settles down where the pickup takes its supply from. A motor filled on a drive in Waun Baglam overnight and left unstarted is the simple one. No pump has pulled the AdBlue up so far — but once your engine turns, that is what is pulled first, straight from the bottom of the tank.

Once it is drawn in, the damage takes two forms. As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it is corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, and so it keeps labouring on the components it hits for as long as it remains there. If the AdBlue has reached the pipework, waiting till morning around Trimsaran leaves it worse. Inside that tank only, time costs nothing. The water in it causes harm of its own: your high-pressure pump and the injectors rely on diesel to lubricate them, and water gives them nothing.

Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is frequently worse

Top up a diesel with petrol by mistake over at the Asda, and this issue is thinned fuel. Harm only comes from driving on it. Blended into your diesel and sitting inside the tank, it causes nothing.

AdBlue in a diesel is a fault of the wrong substance altogether. It doesn't burn, so it cannot simply be run through. Nor can it be thinned, since it separates back out — and the next fill won't rinse away crystals or corrosion. So the flush counts for more here, and trying the engine "to see", in the heart of Trimsaran or out in Llandyry, does more harm than almost any other error.

With AdBlue, the good news is no different from petrol. Not started? Then the AdBlue sits just inside the tank, the simplest bit of the whole system to clear, anywhere your car has come to rest around Carmarthenshire.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around Trimsaran: how it ends up there

Nobody means to do it. The AdBlue filler on plenty of cars rests right next to the diesel filler, occasionally under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light. Most of the time it takes place with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the drive, not at the pump.

It tends to occur in a couple of familiar ways. The top-up gets hurried outside the local primary school, after the dash flashed with a warning as the kids were taken off. A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Heol Morlais. Or the car is topped up in the car park at the pub in the village, in poor light, by somebody who has never opened that flap before.

It happens most in the cars people know least: a hire car, a new motor, a company car, or the second motor of a household with one diesel and one petrol. Wherever you are around Trimsaran or the rest of Carmarthenshire, it's the same slip and the same first answer: leave the car off.

Started the motor with AdBlue in your diesel tank around Trimsaran?

Then that tank is no longer where the AdBlue is. The fuel filter and pipework have had it sucked along, and some running time takes it on to the injection pump and each injector.

Watch for lumpy running, exhaust smoke, lost power, lights on the dash, or a stall — coming back from Clappers Wood, perhaps, or part way across Trimsaran. Stop when safe. Switch off. Keep the vehicle off instead of testing it again. Each start pulls more of it through.

Leave the M4, under 10 miles from Trimsaran, at the first junction and park somewhere safe, rather than carrying on.

Mileage matters: every mile pushes the AdBlue deeper in, so heading for Swansea, under 15 miles away, makes a far larger job than hopping across Trimsaran to the car park by Tabernacl Chapel. Roughly how far it had come is worth telling us.

Once the engine has been run, the flush covers more, and all of it is done where the vehicle has come to a stop. Caught quickly, it very seldom leaves lasting damage.

Trimsaran: how AdBlue is emptied from a diesel

Anywhere it has come to rest in Trimsaran — a filling station, a layby, a driveway, a road beside Plas y Sarn Canolfan Hamdden — our van travels to your vehicle. The work depends on three replies, and our engineers ask for before all else — which fluid was put in, the quantity, and if the engine has run.

Next, draining the tank on the spot removes the contaminated diesel and the AdBlue in one go. The fuel system is flushed thoroughly, which matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, because what it leaves behind doesn't rinse out on its own. The filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested. Most of these jobs are a half-hour visit once our engineers arrive, provided the engine hasn't run. Explosion-proof pumps make a busy forecourt sensible to work on, and they run quiet enough to spare the neighbours at night.

New diesel goes in to bleed your system, and that is the final step. Firing it up comes next, and then you head off from where your car is parked, by Pembrey & Burry Port or on a drive in Trimsaran. Our engineers confirm it runs smoothly on new diesel before we leave. The whole job is done where the vehicle is, so it never needs to go to a garage. Afterwards, you are given the paperwork for the insurer: a VAT invoice and a written report from the engineer.

AdBlue drains across Trimsaran and Carmarthenshire

Waun y Clyn, Heol-ddu and Pen-y-mynydd are among the towns near Trimsaran that the same vans reach, together with much of Carmarthenshire beyond, over the SA postcode area. Near a boundary, or anywhere awkward to explain? Asking beats guessing, so ring.

Anywhere the car sits — your drive at home, a side street, a parking area, a filling station — we drain it on the spot, with no need to bring it to us; which suits Trimsaran, a coastal village, well.

What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out around Trimsaran?

Not one single figure could be fair, because every job is different. Three things move the cost: whether the motor has run and for how long, how much AdBlue got in, and where your car is. That last one rests on whether a van can reach it safely, and an open driveway is easier than a tight space behind Noddfa Chapel.

Ahead of any quote, not afterwards, each enquiry from Trimsaran begins with three questions: the fuel, the amount, and if it ran. The replies turn a range into a straight price.

Priced by phone before the engineer heads out, it is settled that day — card or phone, no deposit. Misfuelling cover is part of plenty of insurance policies, so it pays to look at yours before the van gets there.
