Truncliffe: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off
Motor off, ignition off: that is where you start if AdBlue has gone into your diesel tank. Water with urea dissolved in it: that is AdBlue. It doesn't burn, it does not mix with diesel, and the harm it does starts when the fuel system pulls it in. A drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is around Truncliffe, is normally all AdBlue in a diesel tank takes — if it is caught before the engine has run. Before you do anything else, call 0333 366 0103.
Truncliffe, AdBlue in the diesel tank: what to do right away
Things to do:
- Take your keys out, so nobody switches the ignition on.
- Hazards on, if moving traffic is at all near.
- Hold on to the receipt or the empty bottle, so you can tell us what was put in and roughly how much.
- The van locates you fastest with a postcode starting BD6 1, or just the name of a street nearby, and so call from the car.
Things not to do:
- Not even briefly, and not to shift your car: the motor remains off.
- Don't switch the ignition on. On plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.
- No more fuel added. The AdBlue won't blend, and so it is wasted.
- Even a short way along Pearson Road (West) is too far to drive the car.
- No draining it yourself, either, on the verge.
Moving your vehicle away from the pumps is a job for attendants to help with, wherever Truncliffe forecourt you're on, the Morrisons included. At your own drive, don't touch it at all.
What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?
Meant for the exhaust, AdBlue has no place in the engine. From a separate tank it goes straight to the exhaust, treating what the motor emits. Not one side fits the other: urea doesn't belong in an injection pump, and a pump cannot take urea.
It does not blend. Once it is poured into a tank of diesel, AdBlue acts nothing like fuel. It is heavier than diesel, and so it sinks and gathers at the bottom of the tank, which is where the pickup draws fuel from. Once your system runs, the AdBlue is top of the list to go through. Until then it sits underneath your diesel, and that is why a car filled in Marshfields last night and not started stays the simple case, as long as nobody turns your key.
It causes two kinds of damage from there. What remains when the water evaporates is urea, which forms crystals: they lodge in tiny passages and block filters. Worse, it attacks certain metals in a fuel system, and carries on till it's flushed out. Lines holding AdBlue spell harm by morning for a vehicle parked around Truncliffe. Just in your tank, it stays stable. Then there is the water: it brings no lubrication to the parts that rely on it most — the high-pressure pump and each injector.
AdBlue in a diesel: why it's regularly worse than petrol
Top up a diesel with petrol in error over at the Shell, and the issue is thinned fuel. It mixes with your diesel, and whilst it's in the tank it causes no harm; the damage comes from running your motor on it.
AdBlue in a diesel is a problem of the wrong substance altogether. Not burning, it can't simply be run through. Crystals and corrosion stay through the following tankful, and AdBlue separates again out of your diesel, and so watering it won't work. That is why the flush matters so much, and turning your key "to see" costs more with AdBlue than almost any other slip — in Staygate or the heart of Truncliffe equally.
With AdBlue, the good news is no different from petrol. Wherever across West Yorkshire the vehicle has stopped, an unrun engine means the AdBlue yet in the reservoir: the easiest part of any fuel system to empty.
Truncliffe: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank
It's not deliberate. Plenty of cars have the AdBlue inlet alongside the diesel one, now and then under a single flap, and muddling them up is simple after dark. It usually occurs outside the house, from a container bought on the journey home, not at the forecourt.
Usually, it happens in one of a few familiar ways. The top-up gets rushed outside St Matthew's CofE Primary School and Nursery, after your dash flashed with a warning as the kids were dropped off. A driver tips the bottle in outside their house, right off Scott Street, as the day ends. Else, after dark outside The Top House, the vehicle gets topped up by someone opening that flap the first time.
Hired cars, new cars, fleet vehicles, or the spare vehicle in a family with one of each: the least known vehicles get it most. Leave it switched off: that is the first response to the same mistake, wherever in Truncliffe or the rest of West Yorkshire you happen to be.
Started the engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank in Truncliffe?
In that case, the AdBlue is no longer in that tank. Given any running time, it travels to the injection pump and every injector, having passed through the fuel filter and lines.
You may notice the engine running unevenly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, possibly on the way back from St Abbs Park & Field or halfway across Truncliffe. No restarting to check: stop when safe, then switch everything off. Each start pulls more of it through.
On the M606, under a mile from Truncliffe, the next junction is where to leave, and somewhere safe is where to park — not driving on.
Hopping across Truncliffe to the car park by Bankfoot Gospel Hall is one matter; heading towards Bradford, under 3 miles away, is another, because every mile carries the AdBlue deeper in. So mileage counts. Roughly how far it had come is worth telling us.
Once the motor has run, the flush covers more, and all of it is done where your car has stopped. Very rarely does it leave lasting damage when it's caught early.
What draining AdBlue from a diesel involves around Truncliffe
A street by Odsal Stadium, a drive, a layby or a forecourt: wherever the car has come to rest around Truncliffe, our technicians come to it. Before anything else our engineers ask what was put in, roughly how much, and whether your engine has run, because those answers determine the work.
Right there, the tank is then emptied, and both the polluted diesel and the urea come out as one. A careful flush counts far more with AdBlue than with petrol, since residue will not wash away on its own. Fresh diesel goes in once the filter is flushed — or swapped, when it needs to be — and after that your car is tested. The majority of these jobs are a half-hour job once we get there, provided the engine hasn't run. Low-noise enough for use outside a house at night, and safe on a busy forecourt, our pumps are explosion-proof.
Fresh diesel goes in to prime the fuel system, and that's the final step. Firing it up comes next, and then you set off from where the car is parked, outside Low Moor or on a drive around Truncliffe. The check before our engineers go is that it runs smoothly on new diesel. Since the job is done in full where your car is, a garage never comes into it. At the end, there is the paperwork for the insurer: a VAT invoice and a written report from the engineer.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around Truncliffe: the cost of fixing it
Because each jobs vary, a flat figure would not be fair. The cost shifts first with how long, if at all, the engine has been running, and next with the quantity of AdBlue that went in. After that it depends on where the car is and whether a van can get to it safely, which is simpler on an open driveway than in a tight gap behind St Matthew's.
What was put in, what quantity, and if it ran: each Truncliffe call opens with precisely that, before a figure, never after. The replies turn a range into a straight quote.
Quoted on the call before the engineer heads out, it is paid for that day — card or phone, no deposit. Look at your policy whilst we are on the way: plenty carry misfuelling cover.
