Preventing AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Tullichewan: Why It Occurs
If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave the motor and the ignition off and ring 0333 366 0103. A drain and a full flush, carried out just where the car sits around Tullichewan, is normally all it takes when caught before your motor runs. The rest of this page covers why it takes place and how to ensure it does not — useful if you're reading ahead of time.
Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel vehicle
Diesel feeds the motor — but plenty of current diesels seen around Tullichewan and Jamestown hold another fluid too. Stored in a tank of its own, AdBlue is fed into the exhaust stream to clean it.
Every tank has one filler of its own. Plenty of motors share a single flap for the two, while others move the AdBlue filler to the boot or under the bonnet. Filling the diesel side at the petrol pump goes on constantly. Far less commonly, the AdBlue side is filled — mostly from a bottle, by someone working out where it goes. That gap is where the slip lives.
AdBlue in the diesel tank around Tullichewan: how it occurs
Carelessness rarely causes it. What does is three things coming up together.
On a driveway off Tullichewan Drive before work, or in the car park at Queen of the Loch heading home: that is where the rushed top-up takes place. What is the reason for the rush? As AdBlue runs low the vehicle tells you, and if it is gone, limp mode follows.
New-to-you vehicles come next, as well. Hire cars, new cars and company vehicles place their fillers in new places, and the hand goes for the cap used on the old one.
A spout-topped bottle finds no obstacle at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. And so the tip, after begun, keeps on. The same few seconds decide it, in the middle of Tullichewan or out in Levenvale.
Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?
A few seconds is all the checks take — so check them before you tip anything, on a driveway in Dalmonach or a forecourt in Tullichewan.
- Colour and marking: an AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap normally does not. Trust the cap, not where it sits.
- Look at the size: the smaller filler neck is, on plenty of cars, the AdBlue one.
- The flap. Look inside the fuel flap for a label. Plenty of motors say there which fuel goes where.
- The handbook. If your filler isn't by the diesel cap, it's in your boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.
- Whoever had it before knows. Ask as you pick up a rental or fleet car — at Balloch Central's car park, perhaps — rather than once the warning appears.
AdBlue top-ups that never reach your diesel tank
Anywhere across West Dunbartonshire the light comes on, this is a routine for the day.
- Not in a rush on the side of Craig Avenue, not on a slope, not with your motor running: park then switch off properly.
- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, once you find the AdBlue filler and read it. Daft, yes, yet it does the trick.
- Leave your diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.
- Slowly is best, through the bottle's own spout, till it's full or the bottle is empty.
- Close the cap and check once more. Make sure your diesel cap was never opened. Only then start your car.
Find at the second or third step that the bottle went in the diesel tank? That's where you stop. Never go on to stage five.
Tullichewan: already put AdBlue in the diesel tank?
The short order of things, starting with no starting the motor. Don't switch the ignition on; on many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump. Diluting it with more diesel won't work, since AdBlue sinks to the bottom rather than blending — and that is where the fuel is pulled from.
The attendants at John H Glen & Son, BP or any forecourt will normally help to push the vehicle away if asked. At home around Tullichewan? So the car stays where it is.
If your engine has already run, stop as soon as it is safe and switch off. Tullichewan lies under 10 miles from the M8; there, take the next junction. A short hop across Tullichewan is a smaller job than a run towards Glasgow, under 25 miles away, so tell us about how far it went.
Our arrival around Tullichewan, and what takes place next
The van comes to your car anywhere it stopped — your own drive, near War Memorial, or by the local primary school. Both the work and our price rest on three answers — what fluid, what amount, and whether it's run — so we ask. You get that quote by phone, before anybody heads out.
The fuel system is then cleaned thoroughly, once that tank is cleared. With AdBlue that matters more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't wash out on its own. Testing is last: before that, clean diesel is added, and the filter is cleaned or changed as needed. Before we leave, our technicians start it and make sure that it is running smoothly.
Unrun cars usually need a half-hour job from arrival. The kit is fine on a live forecourt, and hushed enough for a driveway late at night. Your insurer usually wants an engineer's report and your VAT invoice, and both are yours at the end. Payment is on the day, with no deposit. Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it's worth checking yours while we're on the way.
