Turton Bottoms: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?

Pause reading for a moment if the diesel tank already has AdBlue in it: ignition off, engine off, then phone 0333 366 0103. Caught before your engine runs, it's normally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is around Turton Bottoms. If you're reading before it has happened, the rest of this page is about why it occurs and how to make sure it does not.

AdBlue in a diesel motor: two tanks, two fillers

Diesel goes to your engine — yet plenty of newer diesels driven around Turton Bottoms and Hawkshaw carry another fluid as well. Its own tank holds it, and from there it goes to the exhaust, and there a spray cleans the fumes.

Every tank comes with one filler of its own. Under one flap, next to each other: that's the arrangement on many vehicles. On others, AdBlue's filler sits under the bonnet or in the boot instead. The diesel side is fuelled at the petrol pump all the time. Someone who has to stop and work out where it goes normally fills the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less regularly. Mistakes happen in the gap between the two.

How does AdBlue in the diesel tank happen around Turton Bottoms?

Three things tend to line up, and carelessness is rarely one of them.

On a drive off The Gardens before work, or in the car park outside Black Bull on the way home: that's where the hurried top-up happens. What is the reason for the rush? As AdBlue runs low your car tells you, and if it is gone, limp mode kicks in.

Then the car is new. A hire car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not, and the hand gets to for the cap it would have used on the old one.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, and so nothing stops the pour once it has started. The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of Turton Bottoms or out in Chapeltown.

The AdBlue filler and your diesel filler: telling them apart

A couple of seconds is all the checks take — so check them before you pour anything, on a drive in Bromley Cross or a forecourt in Turton Bottoms.

  • Check the cap rather than going by position: AdBlue ones are regularly blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel caps normally are not.
  • On many motors, size tells: AdBlue has the smaller filler neck.
  • The flap. Look inside the fuel flap for a label. Many cars say there which fuel goes where.
  • The handbook says where it lives if the filler is not next to your diesel cap: your boot, or under the bonnet.
  • The previous driver will know. Ask as you pick up a rental or company car — at Entwistle's car park, perhaps — not when the warning appears.

How to top up without AdBlue in the diesel tank

Wherever across Lancashire the light comes on, this is a routine for that day.

  • Not in a rush on the side of Martin Street, not on a slope, not with your engine running: park then switch off properly.
  • Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, once finding the AdBlue filler and read it. Daft, yes, yet it works.
  • Leave your diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.
  • Using the bottle's own spout, pour slowly — and stop when it's full or the bottle is empty.
  • Close the cap and check once more. Make sure the diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the vehicle.

Spot at stage two or three that it's already gone into the diesel side? Then stop right there. Leave out step five entirely.

Already put AdBlue in your diesel tank around Turton Bottoms?

Do not start your motor: that's where the short order of things starts. Do not switch the ignition on; on many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump. AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where your fuel is sucked from — so don't top up with diesel to dilute it.

On a forecourt — Morrisons, BP or any other — the staff will normally help push your car away, when you ask. At home around Turton Bottoms? Then the vehicle remains put.

Stop as soon as it is safe then switch off, if the engine has already run. The next junction means where to leave if you are on the M66, under 5 miles from Turton Bottoms. Mileage matters — a quick hop across Turton Bottoms is a smaller job than driving under 15 miles towards Salford — so say roughly how far it went.

What happens when our engineers turn up in Turton Bottoms

By Turton and Edgworth CofE/Methodist Primary School, near St Anne's Church or on your own drive: wherever your car has stopped, we come to it. Which liquid went in, the quantity, and whether it ran: our engineers ask since the replies set the work and quote. That price is given on the call, ahead of any van leaving.

Then that tank is cleared and your system flushed thoroughly. Not like petrol, AdBlue leaves crystals and attacks certain fuel-system metals, and neither clears out by itself. Hence it counts more. Testing comes last: before that, fresh diesel is added, and your filter is flushed or replaced as needed. We don't go until it has been started and is running smoothly.

If the engine hasn't run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we are there, using pumps that are fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night. Paying is on the day, not upfront, and you receive the documents an insurer asks for: an engineer report and a VAT invoice. Wrong-fuel cover is included in many insurance policies — so make use of the wait to look at yours.
