AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Tuxford? Don't Start It

Engine off, ignition off: that is how you begin if AdBlue has got into your diesel tank. Urea dissolved in water is all AdBlue is. Not like fuel, it neither ignites nor mixes, and no harm starts until your engine sucks it through. If the engine has not run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually emptied and thoroughly purged where the car stands around Tuxford. Before you do anything else, call 0333 366 0103.

Those opening minutes: AdBlue in your diesel tank in Tuxford

Things to do:

  • So no one can turn the ignition on, pull your keys out.
  • Hazards on, if moving traffic is at all near.
  • The empty bottle or the till receipt shows us the fluid and the amount, so do not bin it out.
  • Our van finds you quickest with a postcode starting NG22 0, or simply the name of a street nearby, and so phone from the car.

Do not do these:

  • Not even for a second, and not to shift the car: your motor remains off.
  • Your ignition remains off: on many diesels, turning it on is enough to run your fuel pump.
  • No more fuel added. The AdBlue won't blend, and so it is wasted.
  • Never drive it anywhere, not even a short stretch up Newark Road.
  • Don't try to drain the vehicle yourself at the kerbside.

Rolling your car off the pumps is a job for staff to help with, wherever Tuxford forecourt you're on, the Shell included. If you are on your own drive, leave the car just where it stands.

AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

The motor is not what AdBlue is made for; your exhaust is. Kept in a separate tank, it's injected into the exhaust to treat the gases. A fuel pump is not designed to take it, and AdBlue was never intended to go through one.

It does not combine. After it is poured into a tank of diesel, AdBlue behaves not at all like fuel. It drops, since it's denser than diesel, and settles down where the pickup takes its fuel from. A car topped up on a drive in Sibthorpe overnight and not started since is the simple case. Nothing has pulled the AdBlue up so far — though once the engine turns, that is what goes first, straight from the bottom of your tank.

It does two kinds of harm from there. As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it is corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, and so it keeps working on the parts it reaches for as long as it stays there. A motor left standing around Tuxford with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue only in its tank is not. The water in it does damage of its own: the high-pressure pump and your injectors rely on diesel to lubricate them, and water gives them nothing.

Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is often worse

A problem of thinned fuel is what you end up with after fuelling a diesel with petrol from the another forecourt nearby. Blended through your diesel and left unused, it's no threat at that stage; running the motor is the harm.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the fluid as such is plainly the wrong one. Since it doesn't burn, running it through isn't an option. Whether the vehicle is in Markham Moor or the heart of Tuxford, firing it up "to see" does more harm with AdBlue than nearly any other slip, and the flush counts for more. The reasons: it will not remain mixed, and so watering it down is impossible; and deposits and corrosion outlast the next fill.

As with petrol, there's good news. Anywhere around Nottinghamshire your vehicle has stopped, an unstarted engine leaves the AdBlue yet in the tank: the easiest bit of any fuel system to empty.

Tuxford: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

Plenty of cars put the AdBlue filler beside the diesel cap, now and then under a single flap, and in dim light the two may look the same. No one means it. Most of the time it occurs with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the driveway, not at the pump.

Usually, it takes place in one of a few familiar ways. Hurrying, outside Tuxford Primary Academy, after a warning light flashed on during the school run, a parent refills the car. A driver tips the container in outside their house, right off Newcastle Street, as the day ends. Another version: darkness, the car park by The Sun, and a driver using that flap the first time.

It happens most in the motors people know least: a hire car, a new car, a company car, or the second motor of a household with one diesel and one petrol. Leave it off: that is the first step to the same slip, wherever around Tuxford or the remainder of Nottinghamshire you happen to be.

Tuxford: started the motor with AdBlue in the diesel tank?

The AdBlue has left your tank, then. It's been drawn through your filter and your lines, and if your motor ran for any time, it has got to the high-pressure fuel pump and the fuel injectors.

Rough running, smoke, dropping power, dashboard lights or cutting out: any might show up, maybe midway across Tuxford or coming back from Egmanton Wood. Pull over when it is safe. Switch off. Keep it off instead of restarting it to check. With each start, more of it is pulled through.

Tuxford lies under 15 miles from the Doncaster By-Pass; if you were on it, leave at the next junction and pull up safely rather than driving on.

How far it went matters. A couple of hundred yards across Tuxford to the car park by Sally Mitchells Gallery is a very different job from a run towards Lincoln, under 15 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into your system with each mile. Tell us about how far it had come.

Once your engine has run, the flush includes more, and all of it is done where the vehicle has stopped. If it is noticed early, long-term damage is very rare.

Tuxford: how AdBlue is drained from a diesel

A road by Museum of the Horse, a drive, a layby or a filling station: anywhere your vehicle has stopped around Tuxford, we come to it. Three replies decide the job, and so first our engineers ask what got in, roughly what quantity, and if the motor has turned over.

The polluted diesel and the urea come out as one after that tank is emptied, on the spot. A careful flush matters much more with AdBlue than after petrol, since what remains won't clear out by itself. Clean diesel goes in after the fuel filter is cleaned — or replaced, if it needs to be — and then the car is tested. Roughly half an hour on site is usual for most jobs when the engine hasn't run. The pumps are explosion-proof, fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

Priming your system with new diesel comes at the end. Then we fire it up and you set off, whether from a parking bay outside Retford or a drive in Tuxford. Our engineers check it runs smoothly on new diesel before we go. Since the job is done in full where the car is, a garage never comes into it. The insurer will want an engineer's report and your VAT invoice — each handed over once this job is done.

AdBlue drains across Tuxford and Nottinghamshire

Egmanton, West Markham and East Markham are among the places near Tuxford that the same teams serve, together with most of Nottinghamshire beyond, throughout the NG postcode area. Close to a boundary, or somewhere awkward to explain? Checking beats assuming, and so ring.

Anywhere your vehicle stands — your driveway at home, a residential street, a parking area, a filling station — our technicians empty it on the spot, with no need to bring it to us; which suits Tuxford, a rural village, well.

AdBlue in a diesel tank in Tuxford: the cost of fixing it

No single price would be fair, since each job is different. The price moves first with how long, if at all, your engine has been running, and next with the amount of AdBlue that got in. After that it turns on where your car is and whether a technician can get to it safely, which is easier on an open drive than in a tight spot behind Saint Nicholas.

That's why each call from Tuxford starts with the same three questions, asked before giving a figure, not after: what was put in, how much, and if it's run. Once they are known, a range turns into a single firm figure.

Before a van sets off, you hear our price on the phone. And payment is on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing upfront. Look at your insurance while we are on the way: many carry misfuelling cover.
