Avoiding AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Tyersal: Why It Occurs

Usually, if the engine hasn't run, it is emptied and thoroughly rinsed where the vehicle sits around Tyersal. Reading in advance? Then the rest covers why it happens and what to prevent it ever happening.

Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel motor

Diesel feeds the engine — yet many newer diesels seen about Tyersal and Tyersal Gate carry another fluid too. AdBlue goes to the exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

There's a filler for each tank. Other motors put the AdBlue filler in the boot or under the bonnet; plenty of others have both side by side under one flap. The diesel side is fuelled at the pump all the time. Far less commonly, the AdBlue side is filled — mostly from a bottle, by someone thinking about where it goes. The slip lives in that gap.

Tyersal: how AdBlue in the diesel tank happens

Three things tend to line up, and carelessness is seldom one of them.

On a driveway off Dick Lane before work, or in the car park outside Swain Green Tavern on the way home: that is where the rushed top-up happens. What is the reason for the rush? As AdBlue runs low the vehicle tells you, and if it's gone, limp mode follows.

Then your car is strange. A hire car, a new vehicle or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not, and your hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old one.

Lastly, the bottle goes in: diesel filler or AdBlue filler, it slides in as readily, and after the tip begins, nothing stops it. Whether it takes place in Swain Green or the middle of Tyersal, it is the same few seconds.

The AdBlue filler and the diesel filler: telling them apart

A few seconds is all these take — so check them before you pour anything, on a drive in Holme or a forecourt in Tyersal.

  • Check the cap rather than going by position: AdBlue caps are frequently blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel caps normally are not.
  • On plenty of vehicles, the size tells: AdBlue gets the smaller filler neck.
  • The flap. Look inside the fuel flap for a label. Many cars say there which fuel goes where.
  • In the boot or under the bonnet: that is where your filler is if it is not by the diesel cap, and the handbook tells you which.
  • Picking up a hire or company car, say at the car park outside Bradford Interchange? Check with the person who drove it last before you set off, not once the light comes on.

Keeping AdBlue out of your diesel tank when you top up

For the day the light appears — wherever you are in West Yorkshire — a simple routine to follow.

  • Park and switch off. Not on a slope, not with your motor running, and not in a rush on the side of Woolcombers Way.
  • Daft as it sounds, saying "AdBlue" aloud as you unscrew the cap works — once you have located your filler and read the cap.
  • If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — and leave it on.
  • Stop when the tank is topped up or the bottle is empty; until then, pour slowly using the own spout.
  • Close the cap and check once more. Make sure your diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the vehicle.

Find at step two or three that it has already gone into the diesel side? Then stop right there. Don't carry on to step five.

Put AdBlue in your diesel tank in Tyersal already?

Short order, then. Top of that: the motor remains off. The fuel pump starts on plenty of diesels as soon as the ignition goes on — and so keep it off. AdBlue does not mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where your fuel is pulled from — so do not top up with diesel to dilute it.

The staff at the nearest petrol station, Shell or any forecourt will normally lend a hand pushing the car clear when asked. If you're on your own drive around Tyersal, leave the car where it sits.

Already started? Pull over once it's sensible, then turn off. Leave the M606 — under 3 miles out of Tyersal — at the first exit. Distance counts — a quick hop across Tyersal is a smaller job than driving under 3 miles towards Bradford — so say about how far it went.

When we arrive around Tyersal, what occurs?

The van comes to your car wherever it has come to rest — your own drive, beside St Mary's Church, or by Meadow Bank Community School. Both the work and our price depend on three answers — what fluid, which quantity, and whether it has run — so our engineers ask. You hear that quote by phone, before anybody sets off.

After that: draining, then a thorough flush of the entire system. AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it does not wash out on its own — which is why that matters more here than with petrol. Testing comes last: before that, clean diesel goes in, and your filter is flushed or changed if necessary. After that we start the car and confirm it runs correctly before we leave.

With pumps fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough for use outside a house at night, most jobs in which the engine hasn't run need about half an hour after our engineers are there. Payment happens on the day, not upfront, and you receive the documents your insurer wants: an engineer report and a VAT invoice. Misfuelling cover is included in plenty of insurance policies — and so make use of the wait to look at yours.
