Ubberley: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

Motor off, ignition off: that's where you begin if AdBlue has gone into your diesel tank. Urea mixed in water is all AdBlue is. As it is water-based, it won't ignite and never combines with diesel; damage just comes once your pump starts pulling it. If your motor hasn't run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is normally emptied and carefully flushed where your car sits around Ubberley. No step comes before calling 0333 366 0103.

Ubberley, AdBlue in your diesel tank: what to do right away

Do:

  • So no one can switch the ignition on, pull the keys away.
  • If you're at all close to moving traffic, put your hazards on.
  • The empty bottle or the till receipt tells us the fluid and the amount, and so do not bin it out.
  • Our van locates you fastest with a postcode starting ST2 0, or just the name of a street close by, so call from the car.

Not to do:

  • Moving the car just a few yards is no reason to start the engine.
  • Plenty of diesels power their pump the moment the ignition goes on, and so keep the car off.
  • No extra fuel on top. The AdBlue will not blend, so it's pointless.
  • Even a short distance down Galloway Road is too far to drive the car.
  • Do not try to drain the vehicle yourself at the kerbside.

The staff working at any Ubberley filling station — the Esso included — will normally lend a hand rolling it aside if you ask. Stopped on your own drive? Then it remains exactly where it is.

AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

AdBlue is made for your exhaust, not the engine. From a dedicated tank it is fed straight to the exhaust, treating what your engine emits. Nothing in it is supposed to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is designed to handle it.

Inside a diesel tank it behaves very differently from fuel. It does not mix in. It is heavier than diesel, so it sinks and gathers at the bottom of the tank, which is where the pickup draws fuel from. A motor topped up on a driveway in Hulme overnight and left unstarted counts as the straightforward one. Nothing has sucked the AdBlue up yet — though when the engine runs, that is what is pulled first, straight from the bottom of your tank.

It causes two kinds of damage from there. It attacks some metals used in fuel systems, working on whatever it reaches till it's cleared completely. And once the water evaporates, the urea turns into crystals that clog filters and lodge in tiny channels. If the AdBlue is in the lines, leaving it till morning around Ubberley makes things worse. Inside the tank alone, time does nothing. And there's the water: it offers no lubrication to the parts that need it the most — the injection pump and each injector.

Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is regularly worse

Petrol pumped into a diesel on another forecourt nearby's forecourt makes your fuel watery — that's the whole fault. It mixes with the diesel, and whilst it's inside the tank it causes no damage; the damage comes from running the motor on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is an issue of the wrong substance altogether. It can't just be run through, because it does not burn. It doesn't stay mixed, and so it can't be diluted. And crystals and corrosion don't wash out with the next tank of fuel. That's why the flush matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting your engine "to see" costs more here than nearly anywhere else, whether the car is in Sandford Hill or the middle of Ubberley.

The same good news applies as with petrol. Wherever across Staffordshire the vehicle has stopped, an unrun engine means the AdBlue yet inside the tank: the simplest part of a fuel system to empty.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around Ubberley: how it ends up there

It is not on purpose. Many vehicles have the AdBlue inlet alongside the diesel one, occasionally behind one flap, and muddling them up is easy in poor light. Most of the time it happens with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the drive, not at the forecourt.

A few familiar ways cover most cases. Midway through the drop-off, the dashboard warns, and outside Maple Court Academy the top-up is hurried. A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Winchester Avenue. Another version: dim light, the car park outside Hollybush, and a driver using that flap the first time.

The least familiar vehicles see it the most — hire cars, new ones, company ones, and the spare car of a family with one of each fuels. Wherever you're in Ubberley or the rest of Staffordshire, it is the same mistake and the same first answer: leave it off.

Ubberley: started the motor with AdBlue in the diesel tank?

If so, the AdBlue is no longer in the tank. It's been sucked through your filter and the lines, and if your engine ran for any time, it has reached your high-pressure pump and the fuel injectors.

Watch for lumpy running, smoke, lost power, lights on the dash, or a stall — returning from Bev Park, say, or part way across Ubberley. When you safely can, pull over and switch it off — with no restarting to see. Each start pulls more of it through.

Ubberley lies under 5 miles from the M6; if you were on it, exit at the first junction and stop safely rather than carrying on.

How far it went matters. A couple of hundred yards across Ubberley to the car park by Bentilee Community Centre and Council Office is a very different job from a run towards Stoke-on-Trent, under 3 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into the system with each mile. Let us know about how far it had come.

Our technicians do all of the flushing where the car has ended up, and once the motor has been run there is more of it. Lasting damage is very rare when it's caught soon.

What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve around Ubberley?

The vehicle remains where it is, whether that's a street near Bentilee Library, a driveway, a lay-by or a forecourt around Ubberley, and our van comes to it. Three replies shape the job, and so first our engineers ask what was put in, roughly the amount, plus if the engine has turned over.

Next, draining your tank on the spot takes out the polluted diesel and the AdBlue together. Your system is flushed thoroughly, which counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, because what it leaves behind doesn't rinse out on its own. Clean diesel goes in after the filter is flushed — or swapped, if it needs to be — and then the vehicle is tested. Roughly half an hour on site is usual for most jobs where the engine hasn't run. Explosion-proof pumps mean a live forecourt safe to work on, and they run quiet enough not to disturb the neighbours at night.

Last, your system is primed with fresh diesel. You head off as soon as our technicians have fired it up, and it makes no difference whether the car is on a drive in Ubberley or in a bay at Longton. Before we leave, we check it is running properly with fresh diesel in. No workshop is required at any point, with the whole job done then and there. Afterwards, you are given paperwork for your insurer: a VAT invoice plus a report from the engineer.

AdBlue drains in Ubberley and across Staffordshire

AdBlue call-outs in Ubberley are passed to vans that serve the places around it — Bentilee, Adderley Green as well as Ash Bank — and most of Staffordshire beyond, across ST postcodes. If you are near a border, or somewhere hard to explain, ring and ask rather than assuming.

A mobile service suits Ubberley, a residential suburb: there's no need to take the vehicle to us, since our engineers drain it on the spot, on a drive, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt.

What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out in Ubberley?

No flat figure could be honest, since every job is different. What shifts the cost is, first, whether the motor has been running and for how long; then how much AdBlue got in; and finally where the vehicle is and whether our van can reach it safely, which is easier on an open drive than in a tight space behind Tuesday Market.

With that in mind, every enquiry from Ubberley begins by asking the same trio — which fluid went in, what quantity, whether the engine ran — before a quote. Their replies narrow a range down to a single figure.

Before anyone sets off, you hear the price by phone. And payment is on the day, card or by phone, with nothing upfront. Misfuelling cover is part of many insurance policies, so it is worth looking at yours before the van arrives.
