Ulverston: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

With AdBlue in the diesel tank, the ignition remains off and so does the motor. Water with urea dissolved in it: that is AdBlue. Not like fuel, it neither ignites nor mixes, and nothing happens until the motor pulls it round. A drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is around Ulverston, is generally what AdBlue in a diesel tank needs — if it is caught before the motor has been run. Phone 0333 366 0103 before you do anything else.

Those opening minutes: AdBlue in your diesel tank around Ulverston

Things to do:

  • Pull your keys out, so nobody switches the ignition on.
  • Hazards on, if moving traffic is anywhere close.
  • Hold on to your receipt or the empty bottle, so you can tell us what got in and about how much.
  • Tell us a postcode starting LA12 0, or whatever street is nearest, and the van reaches you straight — so call from wherever you stand.

Things not to do:

  • Not even for a second, and not to shift your car: your motor remains off.
  • Turning the key to ignition alone starts your pump going on many diesels. Skip it.
  • Pouring in extra diesel does not work: AdBlue settles out instead of blending.
  • Do not drive it anywhere, not even a short stretch down Market Street.
  • No emptying it yourself, either, on the roadside.

The attendants on duty at any Ulverston filling station — the Shell among them — will usually lend a hand pushing it clear if you ask. On your own driveway, do not touch it at all.

AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

AdBlue is made for your exhaust, not the engine. It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into your exhaust gas to clean it. A fuel pump isn't designed to take it, and AdBlue was never intended to travel through one.

It doesn't combine. After it is tipped into the tank, AdBlue behaves nothing like diesel. It drops, since it is heavier than diesel, and settles low where the pickup takes its fuel from. Simplest of all: one that got AdBlue in South Ulverston overnight and hasn't turned since. The liquid sits at the foot of that tank, undrawn — though it would be first through once your engine runs, ahead of any diesel at all.

From there it does two kinds of harm. Crystals and corrosion. As the water dries, it strands urea that hardens in filters and tiny channels; meanwhile, because it eats at some metals, each part it touches suffers for as long as it stays in there. A car left standing in Ulverston with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue just in its tank is not. Diesel lubricates the injection pump and every injector as it passes; water offers none of that, which is a second form of harm.

Why AdBlue in a diesel is regularly more serious than petrol

Put petrol in a diesel at the Gulf and you have a fault of thin fuel. It mixes with the diesel, and whilst it's in that tank it does no harm; the harm comes from running the engine on it.

The issue with AdBlue in a diesel is a totally wrong substance. Because it does not burn, running it through is not an option. Crystals and corrosion stay through the following fill, and AdBlue separates back from the diesel, and so thinning it won't help. Hence the flush matters more, and turning your key "to see" does more harm here than almost any other mistake — in Three Bridges or the heart of Ulverston equally.

The good news is the same as with petrol. Never run? Then the AdBlue sits just in the tank, the simplest section of the entire system to clear, wherever your vehicle has come to rest in Cumbria.

Ulverston: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

It is not deliberate. Many vehicles have the AdBlue cap alongside the diesel inlet, occasionally behind one flap, and mixing them up is easy in poor light. Mostly it's never the forecourt: a driver buys a container heading home and pours it in at home.

Usually, it happens in one of a few familiar ways. Hurrying, outside Church Walk CofE Primary School, after a warning light came on during the school run, a parent tops up your car. A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off A590. Another pattern: dim light, the car park by Royal British Legion, and someone using that flap for the first time.

It comes up most in a hire car, a brand-new car, a company car, or the spare car of a family with both fuel types — the cars people use least. Same mistake, same first response — leave it switched off — wherever you happen to be in Ulverston or the rest of Cumbria.

Already started the motor with AdBlue in your diesel tank in Ulverston?

Then the AdBlue has left your tank. The fuel filter and pipework have had it pulled through, and any running time carries it on to the injection pump and each injector.

Expect rough running, smoke, lost power, warnings on the dash, or a cut-out — coming back from Lightburn Park, say, or part way across Ulverston. When safe, stop and switch it off — with no restarting to see. Each start pulls more of it through.

Ulverston sits under 15 miles from the M6; if you were on it, exit by the next junction and pull up safely rather than carrying on.

How far it went matters. A couple of hundred yards across Ulverston to the car park by Ulverston Savings Bank is a very different job from a run towards Lancaster, under 25 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into the fuel system with every mile. Let us know roughly how far it had come.

Wherever your car came to a halt is where all of it gets done, even with more to flush once the engine has been started. When it's caught early, permanent damage is very unusual.

Clearing AdBlue in a diesel in Ulverston: what it takes

A road by Ulverston Art House, a drive, a layby or a filling station: anywhere your car has come to rest in Ulverston, our technicians travel to it. The work depends on three replies, and our engineers get before all else — which fluid was put in, the quantity, and whether the motor has turned over.

Then that tank is drained where the vehicle waits, so the polluted fuel and the AdBlue come out together. Your system is cleaned thoroughly, which counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, because what it leaves behind doesn't rinse out on its own. After that, your filter: flushed, or changed when it has to be. After that clean diesel, and then a check of your vehicle. If the motor has not run, most jobs take about half an hour once our engineers arrive. Explosion-proof pumps mean a live forecourt safe to work on, and they're quiet enough to spare the neighbours at night.

The last step is to prime the fuel system on clean diesel. Firing it up comes next, and then you drive off from where your car is parked, outside the nearest station or on a drive in Ulverston. Our technicians check it runs correctly on new diesel before we go. As the job is done in its entirety where the car is, a workshop never comes into it. You receive a VAT invoice and an engineer report later on, which is what insurers want.

Ulverston: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

No single figure could be honest, since every job is different. What shifts the price is, firstly, whether your engine has been running and for how long; then how much AdBlue was put in; and finally where your car is and whether a technician can get to it safely, which is easier on an open drive than in a tight gap behind Roxy Cinema.

Which fluid got in, how much, and whether the engine ran: each Ulverston call opens by asking precisely that, ahead of any quote, not afterwards. Given them, a range shrinks to a single fixed figure.

You get that price by phone, before anybody sets off, and you pay on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing upfront. Misfuelling cover comes with plenty of insurance policies, so it is worth looking at yours before the van gets there.
