AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in University? Keep It Switched Off

AdBlue in the diesel tank? Then keep your engine off — and your ignition as well. Urea dissolved in water is all AdBlue is. As it is water-based, it won't ignite and won't blend with diesel; damage only comes once your pump begins pulling it. If your engine has not run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually emptied and thoroughly rinsed where your car sits in University. First, ring us on 0333 366 0103.

Those opening minutes: AdBlue in the diesel tank around University

To do:

  • Keys out — that way no one can switch anything on.
  • If you're at all close to moving traffic, put your hazards on.
  • Hold on to your receipt or the empty bottle, and so you can tell us what got in and about how much.
  • The van finds you fastest with a postcode starting M13 9, or simply the name of a street close by, so phone from the car.

Don't:

  • No starting your motor — not for a second, not to shift the car.
  • Turning the key to ignition by itself sets your pump going on plenty of diesels. Avoid it.
  • AdBlue doesn't dilute in diesel — it separates out — so adding more diesel won't thin it.
  • Keep the car where it is rather than driving it anywhere, even a short distance down Oxford Road.
  • No draining it yourself, at all, on the verge.

The attendants working at any University filling station — the Esso included — will usually help rolling it clear if you ask. Parked on your own driveway? Then it stays exactly as it is.

AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

Made for the exhaust, AdBlue has no place in the motor. Stored in a dedicated tank, it is injected into the exhaust stream to treat the fumes. No part inside a fuel pump is designed for this fluid — and none of that was intended to go through one.

Poured in with your diesel, it keeps separate rather than blending — quite different from fuel. It's heavier than diesel, and so it sinks and gathers at the bottom of the tank, which is where the pickup draws fuel from. Easiest of all: a vehicle that had AdBlue in Ardwick overnight and hasn't been started since. The AdBlue sits at the base of the tank, undrawn — but it will be the first thing through if the engine runs, ahead of any diesel at all.

From there it does two kinds of damage. It attacks some metals found in fuel components, attacking whatever it reaches till it is cleared completely. And once the water goes, the urea turns into crystals that block filters and settle in tiny channels. Overnight, a vehicle parked around University with AdBlue in its lines grows worse; where it's just inside your tank, nothing changes. Then there is the water: it brings no lubrication to the parts that need it most — the injection pump and each injector.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in University

Why AdBlue in a diesel is regularly more significant than petrol

Petrol pumped into a diesel on Asda's forecourt leaves the fuel thin — that's the main problem. Damage only comes from driving on it. Blended into your diesel and sitting inside the tank, it does nothing.

AdBlue in a diesel is an issue of the wrong substance altogether. It doesn't burn, so it cannot simply be run through. Nor can it be watered down, because it separates back out — and the following tankful will not clear away crystals or corrosion. So the flush counts for more with AdBlue, and trying your engine "to see", in the heart of University or out in Moss Side, costs more than almost any other slip.

With AdBlue, the good news is no distinct from petrol. If your engine has not run, the AdBlue is still inside your tank, and that tank is the quickest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever across Greater Manchester the vehicle is sitting.

University: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

After dark, two caps side by side — the AdBlue one and the diesel one, now and then under a single flap — can appear the same. Nobody intends it; many designs allow it. A container picked up when driving home and poured in outside the house, instead of at the filling station, is the usual route.

A couple of familiar ways account for the majority of them. A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up takes place in a hurry outside St Philip's Church of England Primary School. Close to Booth Street East, a driver tips a bottle in on that drive after work. Otherwise, in dim light by The Flour and Flagon, your car gets topped up by a driver opening that flap the first time.

It comes up most in a rental, a new vehicle, a company motor, or the other motor in a home with one of each fuels — the vehicles people know least. Keep it switched off: that's the first response to the same slip, anywhere in University or the rest of Greater Manchester you are.

Started the motor with AdBlue in your diesel tank around University?

The AdBlue has left the tank, then. The fuel filter and pipework have had it pulled through, and some running time takes it on to the injection pump and each injector.

Watch for rough running, smoke, falling power, lights on your dash, or a stall — returning from University Green, say, or midway across University. Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and don't restart it to check. Each start pulls more of that through.

University lies under a mile from the A57(M); if you were on it, leave by the next junction and pull up somewhere safe rather than driving on.

Mileage counts: every mile carries the AdBlue further in, so driving towards Manchester, under a mile away, makes a far bigger job than hopping across University to the car park by RNCM Collection of Historic Musical Instruments. Let us know roughly how far it had come.

There is more to rinse out once your engine has been run, and we do all of it where the vehicle has stopped. Very seldom does it leave permanent damage when it's noticed early.

What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve around University?

Wherever it has come to rest around University — a forecourt, a layby, a drive, a street by Manchester Aquatics Centre — the van travels to the vehicle. Three replies decide the job, and so first our technicians ask what was put in, roughly what quantity, and if the engine has turned over.

The contaminated diesel and the urea leave together when your tank is drained, on the spot. A full flush matters far more after AdBlue than with petrol, since residue won't wash away by itself. The filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested. The majority of these jobs are a half-hour visit once we arrive, provided the motor hasn't run. The pumps are explosion-proof, fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

New diesel goes in to prime the system, and that is the last step. Starting the engine comes next, and then you set off from where the car is parked, at Manchester Oxford Road or on a driveway in University. We check it runs properly on new diesel before we leave. As the job is done in its entirety where the car is, a garage never comes into it. Insurers want a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and both come at the end.

AdBlue drains in University and across Greater Manchester

Brunswick, Hulme and Infirmary are among the towns near University that the same vans serve, together with much of Greater Manchester further out, throughout the M postcode area. Close to a boundary, or anywhere tricky to pin down? Checking is better than assuming, so ring.

University is a residential suburb, and a mobile drain suits it: whether the car is on a home drive, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt, our engineers drain it where it is, so it never needs to be shifted to us.

What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right around University

Each job is different, and so no single price is honest. Whether the motor has run, and for how long, comes first in what changes the cost. How much AdBlue went in comes next, and then the position of the vehicle, because an open drive is simpler for our van to reach safely than a tight space behind The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

That is why every call from University starts with the same three queries, asked before giving a figure, not after: what was put in, how much, and if it's run. The replies turn a range into a straight quote.

You hear that quote by phone, before anybody heads out, and you pay on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing upfront. While the van is travelling, dig out your insurance: many include misfuelling.
