AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Uplands? Keep It Switched Off
With AdBlue in the diesel tank, your ignition remains off and so does the motor. In plain terms, AdBlue is just urea in water. As it is water-based, it will not ignite and won't blend with diesel; damage just comes once your pump starts drawing it. Caught before your engine has been run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is generally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is around Uplands. Phone 0333 366 0103 before you do anything else.
Uplands, AdBlue in your diesel tank: what to do right away
Things to do:
- Pull your keys out, and so no one switches your ignition on.
- If you're anywhere near moving traffic, put the hazard lights on.
- Which fluid, and about how much quantity? Hang on to the bottle or the till receipt, and our technicians can see.
- Ring us from where you are. A postcode starting GL5 1, or the name of the nearest street, gets the van to you without a search.
Do not do these:
- Shifting the car even a short way is no reason to start the engine.
- Switching your key to ignition by itself starts the pump running on plenty of diesels. Avoid it.
- AdBlue does not mix in diesel — it separates out — so adding more fuel will not weaken it.
- Don't drive the vehicle anywhere, not even a short distance up Shepherds Croft.
- Don't try to drain the car yourself by the roadside.
The attendants on duty at any Uplands forecourt — the Tesco included — will usually help pushing it clear if you ask. At home, the car stays exactly where it is.
AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there
Not the engine but the exhaust is where AdBlue is meant to go. From a dedicated tank it goes straight to the exhaust, cleaning what your engine emits. Not one side suits the other: urea doesn't belong in an injection pump, and an injection pump can't take urea.
It does not combine. After it's tipped into a tank of diesel, AdBlue acts nothing like fuel. It sinks, because it's heavier than diesel, and pools down where the pickup takes its fuel from. Easiest of all: one that got AdBlue in Stroud last night and has not turned since. The AdBlue waits at the base of your tank, untouched — though it will be the first thing through once your engine runs, ahead of any diesel at all.
After it is sucked in, the harm takes two forms. As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it is corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, and so it keeps labouring on the components it hits for as long as it stays there. If the AdBlue is in the pipework, leaving it till morning in Uplands leaves things worse. Inside your tank alone, waiting costs nothing. And there is the water: it brings no lubrication to the parts that rely on it the most — the injection pump and each injector.
Why is AdBlue in a diesel regularly the bigger problem?
Petrol put into a diesel on BP's forecourt makes your fuel thin — that is the whole problem. No damage is done while it stays put, mixed into the diesel — only once your motor runs on it.
The trouble with AdBlue in a diesel is a completely unsuitable substance. Not burning, it cannot simply be run through. It doesn't stay mixed, and so it can't be thinned. And crystals and corrosion don't wash out with the next tank of fuel. That is why the flush matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting the engine "to see" costs more here than almost anywhere else, whether the car is in Beeches Green or the middle of Uplands.
As with petrol, there's good news. Emptying a tank is the simplest job on any fuel system, and with no running, the AdBlue remains in there — wherever in Gloucestershire the car sits.
AdBlue in a diesel tank around Uplands: how it ends up there
No one means to do it. The AdBlue filler on many cars sits right next to the diesel filler, sometimes under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light. It mostly occurs at home, from a container bought en route home, not at the filling station.
It tends to occur in a couple of familiar ways. A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up takes place in a hurry outside Uplands Community Primary School. A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Shepherds Close. One more version: dim light, the car park by The Fountain Inn, and someone opening that flap for the first time.
Hired vehicles, brand-new vehicles, company cars, or the spare vehicle in a home with both fuels: the least familiar vehicles see it most. Anywhere in Gloucestershire, Uplands included, the slip doesn't change, and nor does the first response: leave it switched off.
Started the engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank around Uplands?
In that case, the AdBlue is no longer in the tank. Given any running, it travels to the high-pressure pump and every injector, having passed via the fuel filter and pipework.
Lumpy running, smoke from the exhaust, dropping power, dashboard warnings or stalling: any may show up, maybe midway across Uplands or coming back from The Grove. Once you safely can, stop then turn everything off — with no turning it on again to test. Each start pulls more of it through.
If you were on the M5, under 5 miles from Uplands, come off at the next junction and stop somewhere safe rather than pressing on.
Hopping across Uplands to the car park by Uplands Community Art (Phone) Box is one matter; driving towards Gloucester, under 10 miles away, is another, since every mile carries the AdBlue deeper in. So mileage matters. Roughly how far it had come is worth telling us.
Wherever the vehicle came to a halt is where all of it gets done, even with more to flush once the motor has been running. Noticed quickly, it very rarely leaves permanent damage.
What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve in Uplands?
Our technicians come to the car, wherever it has stopped in Uplands: a side street near All Saints Church, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt. Three answers shape the work, and so before anything else we ask what got in, about what quantity, plus if the engine has turned over.
Next, draining the tank right there removes the contaminated diesel along with the AdBlue in one go. The fuel system is cleaned thoroughly, which counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, because what it leaves behind does not rinse out on its own. A test of the car comes last, once fresh diesel is added and the fuel filter gets flushed or, if necessary, replaced. If your motor has not run, most jobs take about half an hour once our engineers arrive. Quiet enough to use outside a house at night, and safe on a working forecourt, our pumps are explosion-proof.
The last step is to prime the system on new diesel. Starting the engine comes next, and then you drive off from where the vehicle is parked, by Stroud or on a drive in Uplands. It is tested on new diesel to confirm it runs correctly before our technicians go. The whole job is done where the car is, so it never has to go to a workshop. At the end, you are given paperwork for your insurer: a VAT invoice plus a report from the engineer.

What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right in Uplands
Not one flat price could be fair, because each job is different. Three things move the price: whether your engine has run and for how long, how much AdBlue got in, and where your car is. That last one turns on whether a van can get to it safely, and an open drive is easier than a tight gap behind Cotswold Playhouse.
Which fluid got in, how much, plus whether it ran: every Uplands enquiry opens with exactly those, before any quote, not afterwards. The answers turn a range into a straight price.
The price is given on the call, before anyone leaves; payment happens on the day, by card or by phone, and nothing upfront. Look at your insurance whilst we're on the way: plenty include misfuelling cover.
