Upper Denby: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Avoid It?

Leave the motor and ignition off and call 0333 366 0103 now — reading can wait when AdBlue is already in your diesel tank. A drain and a thorough flush, carried out just where the car stands around Upper Denby, is usually what it takes when found before the motor runs. The rest of this page covers why it takes place and how to make sure it does not — handy if you're reading before it has happened.

Why does AdBlue in a diesel vehicle need its own filler?

Diesel goes to the motor — but many modern diesels seen around Upper Denby and Flockton Green carry a second liquid as well. AdBlue goes to your exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to fresh it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Each tank has its own filler. Other motors put the AdBlue filler in the boot or under the bonnet; plenty more place both side by side under one flap. The diesel side is fuelled at the pump all the time. Someone who has to stop and think where it goes usually tops up the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less often. The mistake grows in that gap between them.

Upper Denby: how AdBlue in your diesel tank occurs

It is hardly ever carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

On a drive off Denby Lane before work, or in the car park outside Shoulder of Mutton Inn on the way home: that's where the rushed top-up happens. What is the reason for the rush? As AdBlue runs low the vehicle tells you, and if it is gone, limp mode follows.

New-to-you cars come second, as well. Rentals, new vehicles and company cars put their fillers in new places, and habit goes for the cap used on the old one.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, so nothing stops the tip after it has started. It takes a few seconds, whether out in Briestfield or right in the heart of Upper Denby.

Telling the AdBlue filler from your diesel filler

Be it a Upper Denby forecourt or a drive over in Fox Royd, spend a couple of seconds on these before anything is poured in.

  • Colour and marking: an AdBlue cap is commonly blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap normally does not. Trust the cap, not its position.
  • On plenty of vehicles, size tells: AdBlue has the smaller filler neck.
  • A label inside your fuel flap often shows which fuel goes where, on plenty of motors. Check for it.
  • The handbook says which it lives when the filler is not next to your diesel cap: the boot, or under the bonnet.
  • Check with the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — if you collect a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park at Ravensthorpe.

Topping up AdBlue without it reaching the diesel tank

The day the light comes on, anywhere in West Yorkshire, use this routine.

  • Switch off after you park — level ground, engine off, and never in a rush by Wakefield Road at the roadside.
  • Find the AdBlue filler, check the cap, and speak the name "AdBlue" out loud while unscrewing it. It seems silly. It does the trick.
  • Leave the diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.
  • Gently is best, through the bottle's own spout, until it's full or the bottle runs out.
  • Close the cap, and look once more — confirm your diesel cap remained closed the whole time. Only then, start the vehicle.

Stop there if you find, at stage two or three, that you have already poured into the diesel side. Step five stays off limits.

Upper Denby: already put AdBlue in your diesel tank?

Brief order, then. First: your motor stays off. Leave your ignition off too, because on many diesels it alone starts the fuel pump. Do not top up with diesel to dilute it: AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where the fuel is drawn from.

The attendants at BP, Shell or another forecourt will usually help pushing your car away if asked. If you're on your own driveway in Upper Denby, leave it where it is.

Already started? Stop once it's sensible, then switch off. Come off the M1 — under 5 miles out of Upper Denby — at the first junction. A short hop across Upper Denby is a smaller job than a run towards Wakefield, under 10 miles away, and so tell us roughly how far it went.

Our arrival in Upper Denby, and what occurs next

Our van comes to the vehicle wherever it has come to rest — your own drive, near Miners' Memorial Garden, or by Flockton CofE (C) First School. Those answers decide the work and the price, and so our engineers ask what was put in, about how much, and whether it's run. That price is given on the call, ahead of any van leaving.

Then your tank is cleared and your system rinsed thoroughly. More than with petrol, it matters here: crystals build up, certain metals corrode, and nothing washes away unaided, no matter how long it sits. Your filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested. After that our engineers fire it up and confirm it runs correctly before we leave.

If your motor hasn't run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we are there, using pumps that are fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night. Payment happens on the day, not upfront, and you receive the documents an insurer wants: an engineer report and a VAT invoice. Wrong-fuel cover is part of plenty of insurance policies — and so use the wait to look at yours.
