AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Upper Hirst? Don't Start It

Motor off, ignition off: that's where you start if AdBlue has gone into your diesel tank. AdBlue is urea dissolved in water. It does not burn, it does not mix with diesel, and the damage it does starts when the system pulls it in. In Upper Hirst, AdBlue in a diesel tank caught before your motor runs normally comes down to a drain and a thorough flush, right where the vehicle is. Before you do anything else, ring 0333 366 0103.

Those opening minutes: AdBlue in your diesel tank around Upper Hirst

Do:

  • Keys out — then nobody can power anything on.
  • Put the hazard lights on if you are at all close to moving traffic.
  • Hold on to the till receipt or the empty bottle, and so you can tell us what got in and about how much.
  • Ring just where you are. Quote a HD3 3 postcode or the nearest street sign, and nobody has to hunt for you.

Things not to do:

  • No starting the motor — not for a second, not to reposition the vehicle.
  • Plenty of diesels run their pump the moment your ignition comes on, and so leave it off.
  • Do not top up with diesel to thin it. AdBlue does not dilute in diesel; it separates out.
  • Never drive the vehicle anywhere, not even a short stretch down Shaw Lane.
  • Draining your tank on your own by the road is not worth trying.

The staff working at any Upper Hirst forecourt — the BP included — will usually help pushing it aside if you ask. At home, the car stays just as it is.

AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

Not the engine but the exhaust is where AdBlue is meant to go. Its own tank keeps it, and from there it is sprayed into the exhaust, where it cleans the gas. Not one side suits the other: urea doesn't belong in a pump, and a pump cannot deal with urea.

Inside a diesel tank it acts really differently from fuel. It does not mix in. Denser than diesel, it sinks and pools underneath it — the very place the pickup sucks from. A car topped up on a drive in Salendine Nook yesterday evening and not started since is the simple case. No pump has pulled the AdBlue up so far — though once your motor runs, that is what is pulled first, directly from the bottom of the tank.

Once it is drawn in, the harm comes in two forms. Crystals and corrosion. As the water dries, it leaves urea that hardens in filter elements and narrow channels; meanwhile, since it attacks certain metals, each part it reaches keeps suffering for as long as it stays in there. Pipes holding AdBlue spell harm by morning for a car parked around Upper Hirst. Just in the tank, it stays the same. The water in it does damage of its own: the high-pressure fuel pump and the fuel injectors depend on diesel to lubricate them, and water gives them nothing.

Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is often worse

An issue of thinned fuel is what you get after fuelling a diesel with petrol at the Scientific Lubricants. Blended through the diesel and left still, it is harmless at that stage; running the engine is the harm.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the liquid itself is simply the wrong one. Since it does not burn, running it through is not an option. Nor can it be watered down, since it separates again — and the next fill won't rinse away deposits or corrosion. So the flush matters for more here, and trying the engine "to see", in the centre of Upper Hirst or out in Longwood Edge, does more harm than almost any other slip.

The same good news applies as with petrol. Wherever around West Yorkshire your vehicle has come to rest, an unrun motor means the AdBlue yet in the tank: the easiest part of a fuel system to empty.

Upper Hirst: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

Plenty of motors place the AdBlue filler alongside the diesel cap, now and then under a single flap, and after dark the two may appear the same. No one means it. A bottle bought when driving home and poured in outside the house, instead of at the filling station, is the typical story.

It tends to take place in a few familiar ways. Hurrying, outside Moorlands Primary School, after a warning lamp flashed on during the school run, someone tops up the vehicle. After work, a bottle is tipped in on a drive close to Ray Gate. Another pattern: darkness, a pub car park by The White Swan, and a driver using that flap for the first time.

It happens most in the motors people know least: a hire car, a new motor, a company car, or the second car of a household with one diesel and one petrol. Keep it off: that is the first response to an identical slip, anywhere in Upper Hirst or the rest of West Yorkshire you are.

Already started your engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank around Upper Hirst?

Then that tank is no longer where the AdBlue is. Given any running, it goes on to the high-pressure pump and each injector, after passing through the filter and lines.

You may notice your engine running roughly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, possibly on the way back from Hirst Wood or halfway across Upper Hirst. When safe, pull over and switch it off — without turning it on again to test. With each start, more of that is pulled through.

Exit the Outlane Interchange, under a mile from Upper Hirst, at the next junction and stop somewhere safe, rather than carrying on.

A quick hop across Upper Hirst to the car park by St Mary Magdalene's Church is one matter; heading towards Bradford, under 15 miles away, is another, because every mile carries the AdBlue deeper in. So distance counts. Let us know about how far it had come.

There's more to clean out once the engine has run, and we do all of it where the vehicle has come to a stop. Long-term damage is very rare if it is spotted quickly.

Upper Hirst: how AdBlue is cleared from a diesel

The vehicle stays where it is, whether that is a street beside Salendine Nook Baptist Church, a drive, a lay-by or a filling station around Upper Hirst, and the van travels to it. Before anything else our engineers ask what was put in, about how much, and if your engine has run, since those answers decide this work.

Right there, the tank is then emptied, and all of the polluted diesel and the urea leave as one. A full flush matters far more with AdBlue than after petrol, since what remains will not clear out on its own. The fuel filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and your car is tested. If your motor has not run, most jobs take about half an hour once our engineers arrive. Quiet enough for use outside a house at night, and fine on a busy forecourt, the pumps are explosion-proof.

New diesel goes in to bleed your system, and that is the final step. Whether it's a parking space outside Slaithwaite or a drive around Upper Hirst, that is where our technicians fire it up and you drive off. We confirm it runs properly on new diesel before we go. We do it all wherever the vehicle has ended up, and it never has to be taken to a garage. Your insurer will want an engineer's report and the VAT invoice — each handed over once the job is done.

Upper Hirst: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

There is no honest single quote, since the jobs are not the same. The price changes first with how long, if at all, the engine has been running, and next with the quantity of AdBlue that was put in. After that it depends on where the car is and whether our van can get to it safely, which is easier on an open driveway than in a tight gap behind Parkwood Methodist Church.

That is why every call from Upper Hirst starts with the same three questions, asked before giving a figure, not after: what got in, how much, and whether it's run. Their replies shrink a range down to one number.

You hear that price on the phone, before anyone heads out, and you pay on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront. While the van is on the way, check your policy: many include misfuelling.
