Preventing AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Upper Weald: Why It Happens

AdBlue already in your diesel tank? In that case put this page down for now, leave the ignition and motor off, and call 0333 366 0103. Why does AdBlue in a diesel motor need its own filler?

Many newer diesels in Lower Weald, as well as Upper Weald, carry on two fluids; your engine takes just your diesel. Its own tank keeps it, and from there it goes to your exhaust, and there a spray cleans the gas.

Each tank has its own filler. On a lot of cars the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in the boot or under the bonnet. Filling the diesel side at the pump goes on constantly. A driver who has to stop and work out where it goes usually fills the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less frequently. Mistakes happen in that gap between the two.

AdBlue in the diesel tank in Upper Weald: how it occurs

Rarely is it carelessness: normally three things line up.

On a driveway off Stratford Road before work, or in the car park outside the pub in the village on the way home: that is where the rushed top-up takes place. What is the reason for the rush? As AdBlue runs low your car warns you, and once it is empty, limp mode kicks in.

Unfamiliar cars are second, as well. Hire cars, new motors and company cars put their fillers differently, and the hand goes for the cap used on the old one.

No part stops the tip once it has started, since a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits. It takes seconds, whether in Middle Weald or right in the centre of Upper Weald.

Telling the AdBlue filler from your diesel filler

Be it a Upper Weald forecourt or a driveway over in Fullers Slade, take a couple of seconds over these before any goes in.

  • Position misleads; the cap doesn't. AdBlue caps are often blue or bear the name "AdBlue" — diesel caps normally do not.
  • The size. On plenty of cars the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.
  • Check inside the fuel flap: plenty of motors carry a label there showing which fuel goes where.
  • In the boot or under the bonnet: that's where the filler sits if it's not by your diesel cap, and the handbook says which.
  • Whoever had it before will know. Ask as you pick up a hire car or company car — from Milton Keynes Central's car park, perhaps — not once the light appears.

AdBlue top-ups that never reach the diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever across Buckinghamshire that is.

  • Pull in somewhere level, motor off, with time to spare — not rushing on the side of Calverton Lane.
  • Find the AdBlue filler, read the cap, and speak the name "AdBlue" aloud while you unscrew it. It seems silly. It works.
  • Both under one flap? So confirm the cap on the diesel filler stays closed before raising the bottle.
  • Stop when your tank is topped up or the bottle runs dry; before that, pour slowly through the own spout.
  • Only after that, start the car: close the cap, check a second time, and make sure your diesel cap was never opened.

Find at the second or third step that AdBlue went into the wrong tank? That's where you stop. Step five stays out.

AdBlue in your diesel tank already, around Upper Weald?

Don't start your engine: that is how the short order of things starts. The fuel pump runs on many diesels as soon as your ignition goes on — and so keep it off. Don't top up with diesel to dilute it: AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where the fuel is sucked from.

If you're at a forecourt, whether it's the Esso or the BP, ask the staff to help push your car clear of the petrol pump. On your own drive in Upper Weald? So your car stays put.

When the engine has been run by now, pull over safely then switch the vehicle off. On the M1, under 10 miles from Upper Weald, that means the next exit. Distance matters — a quick hop across Upper Weald makes a smaller job than heading under 5 miles towards Milton Keynes — so say about how far it went.

What occurs when we arrive in Upper Weald

Outside Watling Primary School, close to Fairfields Sports Hub or on your own drive: wherever your car has stopped, our technicians come to it. Both the work and our price rest on three replies — which fluid, which amount, and if it has run — so we ask. No one heads out before you have had the price by phone.

Then your tank is drained and the fuel system purged thoroughly. With AdBlue that counts more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't wash out on its own. The filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested. The motor is fired up next and tested to be sure it runs correctly, all before we head off.

Unstarted cars usually mean a half-hour job from the moment we arrive. The equipment is fine on a busy forecourt, and hushed enough for a residential street after dark. Paying is on the day, not upfront, and you receive the documents an insurer asks for: an engineer report and a VAT invoice. Misfuelling cover is part of plenty of insurance policies — so use the wait to check yours.
