Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Upperton

If AdBlue has gone into the diesel tank, keep the motor off then leave the ignition off. Urea mixed in water is what AdBlue is. Being water-based, it won't ignite and never combines with diesel; trouble only comes once the pump begins pulling it. A drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is around Upperton, is normally all AdBlue in a diesel tank takes — if it is caught before your motor has been run. Call 0333 366 0103 before you do anything else.

What to do straight away, Upperton: AdBlue in your diesel tank

Do these:

  • So no one can switch the ignition on, take your keys away.
  • If you are anywhere near moving traffic, put the hazards on.
  • The empty bottle or the receipt tells us the fluid and the amount, and so do not throw it away.
  • Call right where you are. Quote a BN21 1 postcode or the nearest street name, and nobody has to search for you.

Things not to do:

  • Do not start the motor, even for a moment to shift your car.
  • Many diesels run their pump the instant the ignition comes on, so keep it off.
  • Do not top up with diesel to thin it. AdBlue does not mix in diesel; it separates out.
  • Even a short stretch down Moatcroft Road is too far to drive it.
  • Do not try to drain the car yourself by the kerbside.

Get the people behind the counter to help you roll the car away from the pumps if you're on a forecourt around Upperton, whether it's the Power- Old Town Service Station or elsewhere. At your own driveway, don't move it at all.

AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

The engine is not what AdBlue is made for; your exhaust is. Its own tank holds it, and from there it is sprayed into the exhaust, and there it cleans the gas. A fuel pump isn't designed to cope with it, and AdBlue was never supposed to travel through one.

It does not combine. After it's tipped into the tank, AdBlue behaves not at all like diesel. The intake sucks fuel from the deepest part of that tank, and that's precisely where AdBlue settles: being denser than diesel, it sinks. Easiest of all: one that got AdBlue in Roselands overnight and hasn't been started since. The liquid waits at the base of your tank, untouched — though it would be first through if your engine runs, ahead of any diesel at all.

It does two kinds of harm from there. As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it's corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, so it keeps labouring on the components it gets to for as long as it stays there. A vehicle left sitting around Upperton with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue only in its tank isn't. Then there's the water: it offers no lubrication to the parts that rely on it the most — the injection pump and every injector.

Why AdBlue in a diesel is frequently more significant than petrol

A fault of thinned fuel is what you end up with after filling a diesel with petrol from the Esso. Mixed through the diesel and left still, it's no threat at that stage; using your motor does the damage.

AdBlue in a diesel is a fault of the wrong substance altogether. It can't just be run through, since it does not burn. Whether your vehicle sits in Ratton Village or the heart of Upperton, turning it over "to see" does more harm with AdBlue than nearly any other mistake, and the flush counts for more. The reasons: it won't stay blended, so diluting it is impossible; and deposits and corrosion outlast the next fill.

The same good news holds as with petrol. Wherever across East Sussex your car has come to rest, an unstarted engine leaves the AdBlue still inside the reservoir: the simplest bit of any fuel system to clear.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around Upperton: how it ends up there

Many cars place the AdBlue cap beside the diesel cap, occasionally behind a single flap, and after dark the two may appear identical. No one intends it. It mostly occurs outside the house, from a bottle bought on the journey home, not at the filling station.

Usually, it takes place in one of a couple of familiar ways. The top-up gets hurried outside Motcombe Infants' School, because the dash lit up with a warning while the children were taken off. Someone tips the container in at home, just off Upperton Road, as the day ends. Or your car is topped up in the car park at The Rainbow, in poor light, by someone who has never opened that flap before.

Hired cars, new motors, fleet motors, or the spare car in a home with both fuels: the least familiar cars see it most. Wherever across East Sussex, Upperton as well, the mistake does not change, and neither does the first response: leave it switched off.

Upperton: started your engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank?

The AdBlue has left the tank, then. Through the fuel filter, through the lines, and — with any running — on to the high-pressure pump and each injector: that's how far it has gone.

You may see the motor running unevenly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, maybe on the way back from Gildredge Park or halfway across Upperton. Pull over when safe. Switch off. Keep the car off instead of testing it again. More of that is pulled through with each start.

Leave the M23, under 50 miles from Upperton, by the next junction and park safely, rather than driving on.

How far it went matters. A couple of hundred yards across Upperton to the car park by St Mary's (Eastbourne Parish Church) is a very different job from a run towards Brighton and Hove, under 25 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into the fuel system with each mile. Approximately how far had it come? Tell us.

Wherever your car came to a halt is where all of it gets done, even with more to rinse out once the motor has been started. Caught quickly, it very seldom leaves lasting damage.

Clearing AdBlue in a diesel in Upperton: what it takes

The car remains where it is, whether that's a road near Motcombe Swimming Pool, a driveway, a layby or a forecourt in Upperton, and our van travels to it. Before anything else our engineers ask what got in, about how much, and whether the motor has run, because those replies decide the work.

Next, draining your tank right there removes the polluted diesel along with the AdBlue in one go. What remains from AdBlue won't flush out by itself, and so the whole system gets a full flush, which matters far more with urea than with petrol. Next, the filter: cleaned, or changed if it has to be. After that clean diesel, then a check of your vehicle. Engine not run? In that case expect roughly half an hour on site for most jobs. Low-noise enough to use outside a house at night, and fine on a working forecourt, our pumps are explosion-proof.

Lastly, your system is primed with clean diesel. Whether it is a parking space outside Eastbourne or a driveway in Upperton, that is where our technicians fire it up and you drive off. Before leaving, our engineers make sure it is running correctly with clean diesel in. No workshop is required at any point, with the whole job done on the spot. Insurers want a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and you get both afterwards.

Upperton: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

Not one flat price could be honest, since every job is different. What shifts the cost is, first of all, whether your engine has run and for how long; then how much AdBlue was put in; and after that where the vehicle is and whether a technician can get to it safely, which is simpler on an open driveway than in a tight space behind cemetery chapel.

What got in, what quantity, and whether it ran: every Upperton enquiry begins with exactly that, ahead of any quote, not after. When they are known, a range turns into one firm number.

Quoted on the call before the van sets out, the job is settled that day — card or phone, no deposit. As the van is on the way, check your insurance: many cover misfuelling.
