AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Upton Rocks? Don't Start It

If AdBlue has got into the diesel tank, keep your motor off then leave the ignition off. Urea mixed in water is all AdBlue is. Unlike fuel, it neither burns nor blends, and nothing happens until the motor sucks it round. If your motor hasn't run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is generally emptied and thoroughly rinsed where the car sits in Upton Rocks. Nothing comes before calling 0333 366 0103.

Upton Rocks, AdBlue in the diesel tank: what to do right away

Things to do:

  • Take your keys out, and so nobody switches your ignition on.
  • If you're at all near moving traffic, put your hazards on.
  • So you can tell us which liquid it was and roughly what quantity, save the receipt or the empty bottle.
  • Call us from where you are. A postcode starting WA8 9, or the name of the nearest street, gets the van to you without a search.

Not to do:

  • Moving the vehicle just a few yards is no reason to fire up the engine.
  • Turning your key to ignition by itself starts the pump running on plenty of diesels. Skip it.
  • Pouring in extra diesel doesn't work: AdBlue separates out rather than blending.
  • Leave it where it is rather than driving it anywhere, even a short distance up Queensbury Way.
  • No draining it yourself, at all, at the roadside.

Rolling your car away from the island is a job for staff to help with, wherever Upton Rocks forecourt you are on, the Shell included. At home, the vehicle stays just where it is.

AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

The motor isn't what AdBlue is made for; the exhaust is. It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into the exhaust gas to clean it. Nothing in a fuel pump is made for this fluid — and no part of that was intended to go through one.

It doesn't blend. After it's poured into a tank of diesel, AdBlue acts nothing like diesel. It is heavier than diesel, and so it sinks and gathers at the bottom of the tank, which is where the pickup draws fuel from. A vehicle filled on a drive in Lunts Heath overnight and not started since counts as the straightforward one. Nothing has pulled the AdBlue up yet — but once your motor turns, that is what is pulled first, straight from the bottom of the tank.

From there it does two kinds of damage. What remains when the water evaporates is urea, which turns into crystals: they lodge in tiny passages and clog filters. Worse, it eats at certain metals in the fuel system, and keeps going till it is flushed out. Overnight, a vehicle sitting in Upton Rocks with AdBlue in its lines grows worse; where it's just in the tank, nothing changes. And there's the water: it offers no lubrication to the parts that need it the most — the high-pressure pump and each injector.

AdBlue in a diesel: why it's often worse than petrol

Put petrol in a diesel at the Gulf and you have an issue of thin fuel. No harm is done while it stays put, mixed into your diesel — only when the engine runs on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is another problem: not thin fuel, yet no fuel at all. Not burning, it can't just be run through. Nor can it be watered down, since it separates back out — and the next fill won't rinse away crystals or corrosion. So the flush matters for more here, and trying your engine "to see", in the centre of Upton Rocks or out in Upton, costs more than almost any other error.

As with petrol, there is good news. Clearing a tank is the simplest part on a fuel system, and without running, the AdBlue stays in it — wherever in Cheshire the vehicle has stopped.

How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank around Upton Rocks

In dim light, two caps together — the AdBlue cap and the diesel cap, occasionally under one flap — may look the same. No one intends it; many layouts invite it. Most of the time it happens with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the drive, not at the pump.

Usually, it takes place in one of a couple of familiar ways. The top-up gets hurried outside Ditton Primary School, after your dash flashed with a warning as the kids were dropped off. Near Lanark Gardens Roundabout, a driver tips a bottle in at home in the evening. Or someone unfamiliar with that flap refills your vehicle after dark, parked in the car park outside The Observatory.

The least familiar vehicles get it the most — hire cars, new cars, company cars, and the other motor in a family with both fuels. Anywhere in Cheshire, Upton Rocks included, the mistake doesn't change, and nor does the first response: leave it switched off.

AdBlue in your diesel tank around Upton Rocks, and the motor started?

If so, the AdBlue is no longer in your tank. Your filter and lines have had it pulled through, and some running time carries it on to the high-pressure pump and each injector.

Maybe returning from Upton Rocks Park, or midway across Upton Rocks, your engine may run rough, smoke, drop pace, light up your dash or cut out. Pull over when safe. Switch off. Keep the vehicle off instead of testing it again. Each start pulls more of that through.

Upton Rocks sits under 3 miles from the M62; if you were on it, leave by the first junction and pull up somewhere safe instead of driving on.

Distance matters: each mile carries the AdBlue deeper in, and so driving towards Liverpool, under 10 miles away, makes a much larger job than crossing Upton Rocks to the car park by Holy Family Church. Tell us roughly how far it had come.

There's more to clean out once your engine has been started, and we do all of it where the vehicle has stopped. Very seldom does it leave long-term damage if it is spotted quickly.

Clearing AdBlue in a diesel in Upton Rocks: what it takes

The vehicle stays where it is, whether that's a road beside St Pius X, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt in Upton Rocks, and our van comes to it. Which fluid was put in, about the quantity, and whether the motor has been run: we ask before all else, because those shape the job.

The contaminated diesel and the urea come out as one when your tank is emptied, on the spot. A full flush matters much more with AdBlue than after petrol, because residue will not clear away on its own. Fresh diesel goes in once your filter is cleaned — or replaced, when it needs to be — and then your car is tested. Most of these jobs are a half-hour job once our technicians get there, provided the motor has not run. Quiet enough for use outside a house at night, and fine on a working forecourt, our pumps are explosion-proof.

Finally, your system is primed with fresh diesel. Then we fire it up and you set off, whether from a parking space by Widnes or a drive in Upton Rocks. It's tested on fresh diesel to make sure it runs smoothly before our technicians head off. No workshop is needed at any stage, with the whole job done on the spot. Your insurer is likely to want an engineer's report and your VAT invoice — each handed over once this job is done.

Upton Rocks: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

There is no honest single quote, since the jobs aren't the same. Whether the engine has been running, and for how long, comes first in what changes the price. How much AdBlue got in comes next, and then the location of the car, since an open drive is easier for our van to get to safely than a tight gap behind Farnworth Methodist Church.

That is why each call from Upton Rocks starts with the same three questions, asked before giving a figure, not after: what was put in, how much, and if it's run. Those replies turn a range into a straight price.

Before anyone sets off, you hear the quote by phone. And you pay on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing in advance. Misfuelling cover is part of many insurance policies, so it pays to look at yours before the van arrives.
